Book excerpt: Daphne du Maurier's classic novel of lust, suspicion, and obsession that inspired major motion picture starring Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin. Orphaned at an early age, Philip Ashley is raised by his benevolent older cousin, Ambrose. Resolutely single, Ambrose delights in Philip as his heir, and Philip grows to love Ambrose's grand estate as much as he does. But the cozy world the two construct is shattered when Ambrose sets off on a trip to Florence. There he falls in love and marries a mysterious distant cousin named Rachel -- and there he dies suddenly. Jealous of his marriage, racked by suspicion at the hints in Ambrose's letters, and grief-stricken by his death, Philip prepares to meet his cousin's widow with hatred in his heart. But when she arrives at the estate, Rachel seems to be a different woman from the one described in Ambrose's letters. Beautiful, sophisticated, and magnetic, Philip cannot help but feel drawn to Rachel. And yet, questions still linger: might she have had a hand in Ambrose's death? And how, exactly, did Ambrose die? As Philip pursues the answers to these questions, he realizes that his own fate could hang in the balance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rachel Ray Good Words. For some reason or other, he hated the school of thought in the National Church known as the Low, or the Evan gelical, and never missed an opportunity of criticizing and - as it seems to the onlooker caricaturing it. The Rev. Mr. Prong, who con demus Rachel Ray for wanting to go to a dance, is, from his name onwards, a caricature, and not in the best taste. For the rest, the story is brightly and amusingly told, though far from being on a level with Trollope's best work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rachel's Secret, Vol. 3 of 3 She was feeling tired and worn, glad to sit down for awhile and think that there was nothing else just now to need her care. Everything was still about the house. The men had not yet come into their suppers, the children were playing in the loft over the barn Martha and the girl were getting their tea in the kitchen. She was free to be quiet if she liked for half an hour; and none but those who have been on the stretch, day after day, from morning to night, and sometimes from night to morning again, charged with the guidance of an unsettled household, while the spirits all the time are taxed to bear with the im patience or the lassitude of sickness, can know what a luxury such a blink Of rest may be. But Rachel had sat down hardly five minutes, when a low moan, proceeding from the sick man's bed, fell upon her ear. He had not been asleep then, or if he had, he had been waked by pain. She laid down her knitting and rose at once. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rachel: A Play in Three Acts The scene is a room scrupulously neat and clean and plainly furnished. The walls are painted green, the woodwork, white. In the rear at the left an open doorway leads into a hall. Its bare, green wall and white baseboard are all that can be seen of it. It leads into the other rooms of the flat. In the centre of the rear wall of the room is a window. It is shut. The white sash curtains are pushed to right and left as far as they will go. The green shade is rolled up to the top. Through the window can be seen the red bricks of a house wall, and the tops of a couple of trees moving now and then in the wind. Within the window, and just below the sill, is a shelf upon which are a few potted plants. Between the window and the door is a bookcase full of books and above it, hanging on the wall, a simply framed, inexpensive copy of Millet's "The Reapers." There is a run extending from the right center to just below the right upper entrance. It is the vestibule of the flat. Its open doorway faces the left wall. In the right wall near the front is another window. Here the sash curtains are drawn together and the green shade is partly lowered. The window is up from the bottom. Through it street noises can be heard. In front of this window is an open, threaded sewing-machine. Some frail, white fabric is lying upon it.
