Book The Formative Years of the Telegraph Union

Download or read book The Formative Years of the Telegraph Union written by Gabriele Balbi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together the results of fresh research into the formative years of the International Telegraph Union (TU), in the period 1849–1875. Its internationalist approach is based on the careful scrutiny of a wealth of primary sources – conference minutes, correspondence, and parliamentary bills, among others – and calls for a fresh appraisal of the mechanics of the TU itself, as well as the moves and manoeuvres caused by constant diplomatic pressure. The methodology used here is multidisciplinary, representative of the contributors, who come from various scientific approaches and possess different skills and competences. The result of over three years’ detailed research, the book is simultaneously a history of media studies, international relations and business.

Book The Telegraph in America

Download or read book The Telegraph in America written by James D. Reid and published by . This book was released on 1879 with total page 920 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an often cited panoramic history of the telegraph which discusses the principal telegraph firms and the key persons within them. Throughout his work, Reid stresses the business and economic aspects of marketing this remarkable scientific invention. The importance of The Telegraph in America as a classic reference in the field is under-scored by the fact that the author was active in telegraphy throughout the period he discusses. He thus had a personal knowledge of persons and events under examination.

Book The Telegraph in America 1832 1920

Download or read book The Telegraph in America 1832 1920 written by David Hochfelder and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telegraphy in the nineteenth century approximated the internet in our own day. Historian and electrical engineer David Hochfelder offers readers a comprehensive history of this groundbreaking technology, which employs breaks in an electrical current to send code along miles of wire. The Telegraph in America, 1832–1920, examines the correlation between technological innovation and social change and shows how this transformative relationship helps us to understand and perhaps define modernity. The telegraph revolutionized the spread of information—speeding personal messages, news of public events, and details of stock fluctuations. During the Civil War, telegraphed intelligence and high-level directives gave the Union war effort a critical advantage. Afterward, the telegraph helped build and break fortunes and, along with the railroad, altered the way Americans thought about time and space. Hochfelder thus supplies us with an introduction to the early stirrings of the information age. -- Richard R. John, Columbia University

Book The proposed union of the telegraph and postal systems

Download or read book The proposed union of the telegraph and postal systems written by Western Union Telegraph Company and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second session of the Fortieth Congress, 1868, a bill was introduced and a paper submitted relating to the "Union of the Telegraph and Postal Systems" in the United States, which has naturally attracted public attention and especially of that large class of our citizens who are identified with the Telegraph interests of the country. The paper bears upon its face such evident marks of care, and the case is presented with so much earnestness and apparent sincerity, notwithstanding the frequency of its errors and the illusory character of its appeals to the practice and experience of foreign nations, that it cannot fail to produce upon the public mind an unjust impression that the usefulness of this great invention is injuriously restricted, and its operations unfaithfully managed, by the organizations having it in control. To correct these erroneous impressions by calmly and respectfully criticizing the statements thus presented, and proving the honesty and fidelity with which the Western Union Telegraph service is performed in this country, is the object of this book.

Book Network Nation

  • Author : Richard R. John
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press

Download or read book Network Nation written by Richard R. John and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The telegraph and the telephone were the first electrical communications networks to become hallmarks of modernity. Yet they were not initially expected to achieve universal accessibility. In this pioneering history of their evolution, Richard R. John demonstrates how access to these networks was determined not only by technological imperatives and economic incentives but also by political decision making at the federal, state, and municipal levels. In the decades between the Civil War and the First World War, Western Union and the Bell System emerged as the dominant providers for the telegraph and telephone. Both operated networks that were products not only of technology and economics but also of a distinctive political economy. Western Union arose in an antimonopolistic political economy that glorified equal rights and vilified special privilege. The Bell System flourished in a progressive political economy that idealized public utility and disparaged unnecessary waste. The popularization of the telegraph and the telephone was opposed by business lobbies that were intent on perpetuating specialty services. In fact, it wasn’t until 1900 that the civic ideal of mass access trumped the elitist ideal of exclusivity in shaping the commercialization of the telephone. The telegraph did not become widely accessible until 1910, sixty-five years after the first fee-for-service telegraph line opened in 1845. Network Nation places the history of telecommunications within the broader context of American politics, business, and discourse. This engrossing and provocative book persuades us of the critical role of political economy in the development of new technologies and their implementation.

Book History of the International Telecommunication Union ITU

Download or read book History of the International Telecommunication Union ITU written by Gabriele Balbi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the history of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), from its origins in the mid-19th century to nowadays. ITU was the first international organization ever and still plays a crucial role in managing global telecommunications today. Putting together some of the most relevant scholars in the field of transnational communications, the book covers the history of ITU from 1865 to digital times in a truly global perspective, taking into account several technologies like the telegraph, the telephone, cables, wireless, radio, television, satellites, mobile phone, the internet and others. The main goal is to identify the long-term strategies of regulation and the techno-diplomatic manoeuvres taken inside ITU, from convincing the majority of the nations to establish the official seat of the Telegraph Union bureau in Switzerland in the 1860s, to contrasting the multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance (supported by US and ICANN). History of the International Telecommunication Union is a trans-disciplinary text and can be interesting for scholars and students in the fields of telecommunications, media, international organizations, transnational communication, diplomacy, political economy of communication, STS, and others. It has the ambition to become a reference point in the history of ITU and, at the same time, just the fi rst comprehensive step towards a longer, inter-technological, political and cultural history of transnational communications to be written in the future.

Book The American Telegrapher

Download or read book The American Telegrapher written by Edwin Gabler and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1883, the Brotherhood of Telegraphers, a nationwide union affiliated with the Knights of Labor, began what proved to be an unsuccessful strike against Western Union. The strike was well publicized, for it pitted a new group of middle-class employees against an enormous corporation headed by Jay Gould. Using the strike as a starting point, [the author] has written a social history of American telegraphy in the late nineteenth century, exploring the backgrounds, values, and experiences of the men and women who worked as operators."--Page 4 of cover.

Download or read book Network Neutrality written by Gabriele Balbi and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses new sources to indepth the early history of the Telegraph Union (today the International Telecommunication Union) and focuses on the key role - political, diplomatic, economic and technical - Switzerland played in promoting its birth and managing its structures during the ten years preceding and following its creation (1855-1875). The history of the ITU tends to be neglected in telecommunication history and the role of Switzerland in its formation and management has been largely overlooked. This is surprising for three reasons: first, it was (and still is) the seat of the Bureau; second, until World War Two the secretary was a Swiss national; finally, the Bureau was under the direct control of the Swiss government. The main statement of this book is that the political economy of Switzerland, based on neutrality, diplomacy, internationalism and technical expertise, exerted a decisive influence over the origins of the ITU.
