This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Formation of the New Testament About fourteen years ago, while a student in Union Theological Seminary, I began a study of the ante-nicene Fathers, with a view to discover ing the forces and aims that caused the Christian Church to form a New Testament. I submitted an essay at that time, for which I was awarded the prize in New Testament Introduction. A few years later I read a paper on the same sub ject before the American Society of Church His tory. While a pastor in New Haven I did some work in the library of Yale University, especially on the fragments of Heracleon's Commentary of John, preserved for us by Origen, on the ground of authority underlying the Christianity of Clement of Alexandria, and on several other subjects closely related to this discussion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of the New Testament Very frequently the question is asked Where can I find a short and readable account in English of the formation of our New Testament? The following brief outline, with all its shortcomings, is offered to supply the obvious need disclosed by the unsatisfactory, but only truthful, an swer to that question There is none. Furthermore, it is desirable in theological and religious discussion not only that the results of scholarship be published, but also that the historic method of scholar ship be explained, as it is important that the general reader, as well as the special student, should understand, in so far as possible, the movements which produced the results. It is hoped that the following pages will supply this need as well. I know of no great period of religious awakening or of moral-reform that has not owed its vitality to the faith of the people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Formation of the Gospels The ensuing pages contain an attempt to solve the Synoptic problem by methods similar to those employed in the orthodox solution of the Hexateuchal - by allowing weight to the doublets, repetitions, and inconsistencies, from which none of the Synoptic Gospels is free. No pretence is made to completeness of treatment. A new construction-theory is sketched, which must stand or fall by the test, "Will it work?" In the Hexateuchal problem the difficulty arises from the deficiency of data. But in the Synoptic, the case is otherwise. The locks to be opened are too many and complicated for any but the right key to fit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament History: A Study of the Beginnings of Christianity This history might be more strictly called a study of the beginnings of Christianity. While designed primarily for use as a college textbook, it should be of equal value to any reader who wishes to trace the story of Christianity in its first days. This is first Of all a historical study. The average man has been wont to regard Christianity as a fixed and finished something that has been dropped down from the skies. If you speak of the Christian religion he will think first of all of a collection of writings, or of a body of doctrine, or Of the institution of the church. But these three, Bible and doctrine and church, are simply the products of a greater movement that lies back of them. To understand Christi amity we must go back to this great current of life which was at once the greatest revelation of the divine Spirit and the greatest movement of the human spirit that mankind has known. What was the world to which this new life came? What did its Founder teach and do? How did the world brotherhood come out of the little company of Jews that followed him? Book Outlines of New Testament History Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of New Testament History The present is a companion volume to the Outlines Of Jewish History published some months ago. It deals with the historical data supplied by the inspired writings Of the New Testament, in exactly the same manner as the pre ceding work did with the various events recorded in the sacred books Of the Old Testament. In both volumes the writer has pursued the same purpose and followed the same methods. Both works have been prepared for the special use Of theological students, not, however, without the hope that they may prove serviceable to a much larger number Of readers, such as teachers Of Bible history in Sunday-schools, colleges, academies, and the like. In neither volume has it been the aim Of the writer to supply a substitute for the Bible itself, but rather a help towards a more careful perusal Of the inspired record. With this purpose in view, he has set forth such results of modern investigation as may render the sacred narrative more intelligible and attractive. Many Of the difficulties which are daily being raised on historical grounds are also touched upon, and the biblical student is supplied with constant references to further sources of in formation. Book The Making of the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Making of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by Benjamin W. Bacon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of the New Testament The New Testament presents the paradox of a literature born of protest against the tyranny of a canon, yet ultimately canonized itself through an increasing demand for/ external authority. This paradox is full of significance. We must examine it more closely. The work of Jesus was a consistent effort} to set religion free from the deadening system of the scribes. He was conscious of a direct, divine authority. The broken lights of former inspiration are lost in the full dawn of God's presence to His soul. Book The Story of the Revised New Testament

Download or read book The Story of the Revised New Testament written by Matthew Brown Riddle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Revised New Testament: American Standard Edition It was necessary in telling this story to begin at the inception of the movement for Revision. Hence this little book repeats many facts that were published when, and immediately after, the Revised New Testa ment of 1881 appeared. But another gener ation has grown up since that date, and much well known to Biblical scholars will be new to most readers to - day. Yet, even in telling of the labors before 1881, the writer, from his connection with the American Company of New Testament Revisers, has been able to include many facts not known to the general public. The account of the preparation of the Standard Edition of the American Revised New Testament has never been published before, and the writer has found, from many letters of inquiry, that little is known about the details. The same inquiries indicate a desire to learn the facts as here briefly presented. Thirty-five years have passed since the work began, and this sketch has been penned in the desire and hope of making these long years of labor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the New Testament The little volume which we call the New Testament has had more influence on the world than the whole literature of England or France. It consists of twenty-seven books, written eighteen centuries ago, in a degenerate form of Greek, by authors of Jewish race and scanty learning. Nevertheless, millions of persons still turn to the New Testament for guidance and for consolation. Such persons should surely wish to know in what order and in what circumstances these twenty-seven books were written; how many of them may be assigned to their traditional authors; what motives animated these men; whether any of the books are compilations from earlier documents; and how they came to occupy their unique position among Christian writings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our New Testament: How Did We Get It? This list does not profess to be exhaustive, but only to give the titles of the books most consulted in the writing of this book, and most frequently referred to in its pages. They are also the books most accessible to any who may wish to carry their studies on the Canon further. Charteris, Canonicity: a Collection of Early Testi monies to the Canonical books of the New Testament. Edinburgh, 1880. A storehouse of fact. Anybody who has and masters this book, knows all that is to be known about the early history of the Canon. Ferris, The Formation of the New Testament. Phila delphia, 1907. Excellent in spirit and style, but gives a very incomplete view of the facts, and is singularly unfortunate in its generalizations. Download or read book The Story of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by Edgar Johnson Goodspeed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the New Testament It must always be remembered that Christianity did not spring from the New Testament but the New Testament from Christianity. Christianity did not begin as a religion of books but as a religion of spirit. There was neither time nor need to write books when the Lord Jesus was at the very doors. Still less was there need of authoritative books to guide men whose dominant conviction was that they had the Mind of Christ, the very Spirit Of God, guiding them constantly from within. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of the New Testament The present brief and crisp treatise on The Origin of the New Testament was originally delivered by the late Professor Wrede to an educated audience of lay folk in the form of lectures. The reader will not fail to perceive marks of this in the direct personal style of address throughout. A certain melancholy interest attaches to it as a posthumous publication. It is among the literary remains of the late Professor William Wrede, published by his brother with the assistance of a friend of the deceased theologian. The present work is intended for, and suited to, a much wider circle of readers than more elaborate and technical works. Book The Student s Chronological New Testament Text of the American Standard Revision

Download or read book The Student s Chronological New Testament Text of the American Standard Revision written by Archibald T. Robertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Chronological New Testament (Text of the American Standard Revision): With Introductory Historical Notes and Outlines The exact chronology of all the books is not observed for Obvious rea sons. For instance, the Four Gospels all doubtless belong to a period after the Epistle Of James and some of Paul's Epistles. The Gospels, it should be remembered, are an interpretation Of the facts of Christ's life, in the light of much Of the Apostolic history and with some of the Apostolic literature already produced. A solid historical basis is thus easily reached in studying the foundations of Christianity which rein forces the Gospels. But as the Gospels deal with facts that antedate the Apostolic history, they must in historical study clearly be read before that history. Again, the Acts of the Apostles was undoubtedly written after many of the books Of the New Testament had appeared. And yet, since much of the story Of Acts antedates those books, the Acts must appear before the Apostolic Epistles. Where it is possible in con nection With the Epistles, mention will be made Of the part of Acts with which it corresponds. The effort has been not to follow a blind rule, but to arrange the books in such a way as to allow them to throw light on each other and in accordance with the known or probable historical facts, so that one can read in the Scripture text the story of the origin of Christianity and its actual development.
