Book Old Schuylkill Tales

Download or read book Old Schuylkill Tales written by Ella Zerbey Elliott and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1906 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The local history of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania is full of interesting stories about the intrepid souls who settled there, building the first towns and industries of the region. This is a well-researched and superbly composed chronicle which traverses various aspects of Schuylkill life. It begins with a profile of the German settlers who were the majority group who established themselves in areas of Penn State during the mid-1700s. We continue onto accounts of the initial settlements; essential matters include agriculture and an effective defense from aggressive Native American tribes. To better place the reader character profiles are given, describing certain people and the environs that surrounded them. As the decades went by, hamlets and villages grew into towns such as Pottsville. New industries were born and developed rapidly as the population burgeoned. The discovery of coal plus the advent of steam engines and the railroad led the economy of Schuylkill to prosperity. Churches were built to keep the locals mindful of the Lord, and schools were set up to educate the new generations. Amid all this activity, many intriguing stories and events ensued - together, these bring alive a distant era of grit, determination and hardiness.

The relentless pursuit, day in and day out, might indeed be the true essence of an artist. Art is always a work in progress; though its end is unknown, an artist's duty is to keep moving forward. True artists do not seek immediate glory. Instead, they prove their worth through sheer passion and effort, not by waiting for the perfect moment. This novel, “Almost Blue”, unravels the journey of an aspiring writer whose dreams take a distorted path, seen through the author's autobiographical lens. “What on earth is your dream?” The narrator is betrayed by the belief that wholehearted dedication and effort will lead to a happy ending. Yet, he does not give up. He realizes too late that what has taken root in his mind is not a seed of a dream, but an illusion bound by societal systems and values, and eventually... Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 27 April 1944. Exercise Tiger. German E-boats intercept rehearsals for the D-Day landings... On a dark night in 1944, a beautiful stretch of the Devon coast became the scene of desperate horror. Tales began to leak out of night-time explosions and seaborne activity. This was practice for Exercise Tiger, the main rehearsal for the Utah Beach landings. This fiasco, in which nearly 1,000 soldiers died, was buried by officials until it was almost forgotten. That is, until Ken Small discovered the story, and decided to dedicate the rest of his life to honouring the brave young men who perished in the disastrous exercise. Pulling a Sherman tank from the seabed, Ken created a memorial to those who died and started to share their story, and his, with the world. This updated edition of a bestselling classic is a gripping tale of wartime disaster and rescue in the words of the soldiers who were there, and of one man's curiosity that turned into a fight to ensure that they would never be forgotten.

Book Hybrid Anxieties

    Book Details:
  • Author : C. L. Quinan
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2020-12
  • ISBN : 1496223594
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Hybrid Anxieties written by C. L. Quinan and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated at the crossroads of queer theory and postcolonial studies, Hybrid Anxieties analyzes the intertwined and composite aspects of identities and textual forms in the wake of the French-Algerian War (1954-1962). C. L. Quinan argues that the war precipitated a dynamic in which a contestation of hegemonic masculinity occurred alongside a production of queer modes of subjectivity, embodiment, and memory that subvert norms. Innovations in literature and cinema were also directly impacted by the long and difficult process of decolonization, as the war provoked a rethinking of politics and aesthetics. The novels, films, and poetry analyzed in Hybrid Anxieties trace this imbrication of content and form, demonstrating how a postwar fracturing had both salutary and injurious effects, not only on bodies and psyches but also on artistic forms. Adopting a queer postcolonial perspective, Hybrid Anxieties adds a new impulse to the question of how to rethink hegemonic notions of gender, sexuality, and nationality, thereby opening up new spaces for considering the redemptive and productive possibilities of negotiating life in a postcolonial context. Without losing sight of the trauma of this particularly violent chapter in history, Hybrid Anxieties proposes a new kind of hybridity that, however anxious and anticipatory, emphasizes the productive forces of a queer desire to deconstruct teleological relationships between past, present, and future.

Book Women Military Pilots of World War II

Download or read book Women Military Pilots of World War II written by Lois K. Merry and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 2000 women in the United States, Great Britain and the Soviet Union flew military airplanes in organized units during World War II, yet their stories are largely unknown. These pilots ferried aircraft, flew targets for ground artillery practice, tested airplanes and equipment, and many of them flew in combat. The women pilots proved that they could manage bombers and fighters as well as their male counterparts, and several later remarked that "the airplanes didn't care who flew them." Topics covered include the training of female pilots, how female flight units were developed and structured, the hazards of conflict, and how these women reintegrated into civilian life following the war.
