Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Trees of North America (Exclusive of Mexico) An analytical key to the families, based on the arrangement and character of the leaves, will lead the reader first to the family to which any tree belongs; a conspectus of the genera, embodying the important and easily discovered contrasting characters of each genus and following the description of each family represented by more than one genus, will lead him to the genus he is trying to determine; and a similar conspectus of the species, following the description of the genus, will finally bring him to the species for which he is looking. Fur ther to facilitate the determination, one or more letters, attached to the name of the species in the conspectus following the description of the genus, indicate in which of the eight te gions into which the country is divided according to the prevailing character of the arbores cent vegetation that species 'grows (see map forming frontispiece of the volume). For example, the northeastern part of the country, including the high Appalachian Mountains in the southern states which have chiefly a northern flora, is represented by (a), and a per son wishing to learn the name of a Pine-tree or of an Oak in that region need occupy him self only with those species which in the conspectus of the genus Quercus or Pinus are followed by the letter (a), while a person wishing to determine an Oak or a Pine-tree in Oregon or California may pass over all species which are not followed by (g), the letter which represents the Pacific coast region south of the state of Washington. The sign of degrees is used in this work to represent feet, and the sign of minutes inches. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forester: Being Plain and Practical Directions for the Planting, Rearing, and General Management of Forest Trees Having, for the period of fifteen years, had my attention almost entirely devoted to the rear ing up and cutting down \of forest trees, I have during that time seen much to convince me that arboriculture is not in that advanced state among us which its real importance demands. The present improved condition of agriculture is the natural result of the great attention paid to that science by the landed proprietors and farmers of Great Britain during the past twenty years; while, upon the other hand, the proper management of plantations has been almost entirely neglected, and this mainly because landed proprietors have not had their attention and interest directed towards the subject. Many of our home woods are rapidly dying out, as if by consumption; yet the cause does not appear to be known among those who have the management of them: and, seeing this state of things, it appears to me very evident, that until. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Forest Trees The commercial timbers of this country are divided into two classes, hardwoods and softwoods. The division is for convenience, and is sanctioned by custom, but it is not based on the actual hardness and softness of the different woods. The division has, however, a scientific basis founded on the mechanical structures of the two classes of woods, and there is little disagreement among either those who use forest products or manufacture them, or those who investigate the actual structure of the woods themselves, as to which belong in the hardwood and which in the softwood class. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Important Timber Trees of the United States: A Manual of Practical Forestry Another feature may cause surprise in the minds of some of my readers. It is not at all improbable that some of the descriptions of trees considered do not agree with the reader's personal observation, and yet such descriptions may well fit the general average of the tree. The character and general appearance of trees are frequently modified to a great extent by location, climate, and soil. Trees of a given species grown in the same vicinity will often vary in form and sometimes in character of wood; therefore a description of the general average will best fit the case, and to give such has been my endeavor. Book First Book of Forestry Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Book of Forestry Classic Reprint written by Filibert Roth and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Forestry During the last twenty years the general interest in forestry has grown with remarkable rapidity in all parts of our country. The federal government has set aside large forest reserves, and several states have established reservations or parks. The private owners of large tracts of forest lands are employing trained foresters to care for their property, and an improvement in the smaller holdings is everywhere noticeable. Forestry is taught in two special schools in America, and elementary courses on the subject are given in several colleges and preparatory schools. A desire has been expressed to introduce this useful and interesting study into our public schools and country homes, and this volume is an attempt to provide a book on the subject which shall satisfy this demand. In keeping with this purpose there has been no attempt to write a textbook or manual of forestry; but an effort has been made to present in simple, non-technical language some of the general principles underlying the science, and to state the methods which are employed and the objects to be attained in the practice of forestry. Early association with the well-kept forests of Germany, observations made in the widely differing forest districts of our own country, and three years' experience in teaching forestry have helped to make the responsible task of preparing this book a pleasure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees and How to Know Them: A Manual With Analytical and Dichotomous Keys of the Principal Forest Trees of the South The practical study of trees for many years, together with an effort to instruct others, has led me to prepare the keys offered in this book; they have grown from a few pencil notes relative to the trees in the University grounds and vicinity to a more com prehensive tabulation of the principal forest trees of the Southern States. All the trees of this territory are not included, because an exhaustive list would make the keys so cumbersome as to threaten their practical use. On the other hand they include 'many trees that are not indigenous to the territory. It was thought well to do this because the importation of foreign va rieties for ornamental uses has made desirable a knowledge of their relationship. Download or read book Forest Trees and Forest Scenery Classic Reprint written by George Frederick Schwarz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Trees and Forest Scenery IN the ensuing pages I have made simple inquiries into the sources of beauty and at tractiveness in American forest trees and sylvan scenery. In the concluding chapter, by way of contrast, I have given a short ac count of the esthetic effects of the artificial forests of Europe. The system which shaped these forests and gave them their present ap pearance should, however, possess more than a comparative interest for Americans. It has, in fact, a further connection, though a slight one, with the subject, and therefore requires a few words of explanation.
