This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III. A NIGHT OF PERIL AND OF ACTION. Dark night, that from the eye his function takes. The eye more quick of apprehension makes. Midsummer Night's Dream. When the suppressed step of the Indian was heard on the lower floor, the Forest Spy leaned as far out of the window as possible, and holding his rifle for an instant by the muzzle, dropped it to the ground. As the weapon left his hand, the lower portion was but a few feet from the earth, and it descended this short distance without losing its uprightness, falling upon the stock, and tipping lightly against the house as if placed there by the owner himself. This done, the latter drew his head back, and awaited to see whether it attracted attention. It appeared to have been unheard, for he saw no one appear; but, in the few secondsnecessarily consumed in doing this, the footsteps in the lower room had increased by the sounds to full a dozen, and were now heard pattering upon the floor, like the passing hither and thither of so many cats. There was not a moment to be lost, for the next instant the heads of the Creeks might appear. Running his feet quickly and noiselessly through the opening, he forced himself out until he hung by his hands, when, balancing himself in this position for a few moments, he dropped lightly to the ground, and, seizing his rifle, ran a few yards, and dropped flat on his face behind a large stump. As he did so, he heard a slight disturbance at the window he had left; and, although he could detect nothing suspicious, yet from the peculiar suppressed rattle, he rightly judged it was made by Nockwynee in replacing the sash, so as to conceal all evidence of his departure. Most fortunately his escape from the building had not attracted the attention of the Creeks; but he saw, with some...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Encounter in the Wood. "Hullo! What's that?" The lad who uttered those words dropped a short, stiff fishing-rod in amongst the bracken and furze, and made a dash in the direction of a sharp rustling sound to his right, ran as hard as he could, full-pelt, for about five-and-twenty yards, and then, catching his toe in a tough stem of heather, went headlong down into a tuft of closely-cropped furze-the delicate finer kind-which had been nibbled off year after year till it had assumed the form of a great green-and-gold cushion, beautiful to look at, but too pointed in its attentions to make a pleasant resting-place. "Bother!" shouted the boy, as he scrambled up. "Oh, what an ass I am! Anyone would think I was old enough to know that I couldn't catch a rabbit on the run, even if he had no hole among the hazel-stubbs. Hole? Hundreds, where he could dive down. Horrid, prickly things furzes are. That was a sharp one; but there, it hasn't hurt much, only it makes one so jolly hot." He walked backward along the edge of the forest much more deliberately to stoop and pick up his rod. "Yes, of course," he grumbled, and he screwed up a rather good-looking young manly face into a grin of annoyance which shewed all his closely set white teeth; "I might have known-all in a tangle. The hook broken, of course!" He let the butt of the rod which bore a very old-fashioned brass winch, rest in the hollow of his arm, while he carefully extricated the hook at the end of his line from where it had fallen and caught hold of a stem of dwarf bracken, while to free it and the hair, feather, and dubbing which had transformed the said hook into what was supposed to be a big artificial fly, although it was not in the slightest degree like any insect that ever flew, required no little care. "Humph!" he grunted; "might have been worse. But what a stupid a trout must be to go at a thing like that! Well, so much the better for me. Now then: once more, to begin." But the boy seemed in no hurry to start. His exertions, though slight, had made him very hot, and he took off his cap to wipe away the shining drops that covered his sun-tanned forehead and stood thickly where, higher up, the skin was white amongst the thickly set curls of his brown hair. He looked round at a common-like portion of the New Forest over a slightly undulating stretch of velvety grass, bracken, heather and stunted oak-trees, which gave the place a park-like aspect, running right up to where the oaks were clustered thickly, with an occasional silvery or ruddy barked birch, and made dense with hazel-stubbs and alder. "Oh, what a jolly day!" he said; "but isn't it hot!" It was, for the autumn sun shone down out of a vivid blue sky upon the gloriously green growth which was beginning here and there to look mellow and ripe as if shot with ruddy gold. "I might just as well lie down and read under the shade of one of the trees," mused the boy, "for the trout will be all in the most cranky places right under the stones and roots....

Book The Spy Worker

Download or read book The Spy Worker written by John M. Makie and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-04-16 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petty Officer John G. Makie of the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve did not realize what he was getting into in the summer of 1942, when he gave an oath at Camp X under the Canadian Secrets Act of 1939. He was only seventeen years old and determined to defend the freedom of Canada. He did so, in the most extraordinary way. He was special agent number 034, of the secret service group - under water demolition squadron. These secret agents were very highly trained commandos, who came from Canada, Britain, and Australia. These fearless men were scuba divers trained in small arms and hand-to-hand combat. They entered enemy occupied countries by the sea, carried out acts of sabotage and clandestine warfare. Then, they quickly disappeared into the night, back to the sea. These men had no name or rank, just mission after mission in Russia, Norway, Sweden, and France. This brave group of men, personally encouraged by Sir Winston Churchill, Sir William Stephenson, and Lord Louis Mountbatten set out to set Europe ablaze. When the war was over in Europe they set out to mop up Burma and Hong Kong. Yet no record of fallen buddies can be found. The year 1996 marks the end of the fifty-year gag order by oath and with it, the truth is finally set free. The Spy Worker reveals secrets of a time long, long agoall accounted by the lone survivor, now in his eighties which are finally free to share with friends and family. After many therapeutic sessions over the last ten years, events of this forgotten group are starting to surface. Although there are no records of their missions or medals of valor ever rewarded, The Spy Worker pays tribute to the unsung heroes of war in remembering their notable acts of bravery.
