Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Important Forest Trees of Maryland: How to Know Them The two kinds of flowers are at the end of minute twigs on separate trees. Blooming in February or March, the male trees often assume a golden color from the small catkins, which, when shaken, shed clouds of yellow pollen. The fruit, which matures in one season, is pale blue, often with a white bloom, one-quarter of an inch in diameter, berry-like, enclos ing one or two seeds in the sweet flesh. It is a favorite winter food for birds. The bark is very thin, reddish brown, peeling off in long, shred-like strips. The tree is extremely irregular in its growth, so that the trunk is usually more or less grooved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Timber Industries of Maryland Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Timber Industries of Maryland Classic Reprint written by James T. Bones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Industries of Maryland Forest industries used over 42 million cubic feet of timber from the forests of Maryland in 1975. Almost 58 percent of this volume was from hardwood trees. Sawlogs were the major timber product, accounting for slightly more than 55 percent of the total harvest in Maryland. Pulpwood production ranked second in volume, accounting for 33 percent of the total. Other timber products that made up a minor portion of the harvest were veneer and cooperage logs, piling, poles, posts, mine timbers, and handle stock. Overall, the timber harvest in Maryland has decreased 25 percent since the last industry sur vey was made in 1963, and 19 percent since 1952. Even though the production of most products declined between 1963 and 1975, two products showed substantial increases: the harvest of veneer logs and pulpwood increased 42 and 27 percent respectively. These production gains were due entirely to an increase in the use of softwoods for pulpwood and veneer. The softwood harvest for pulpwood increased from million cubic feet in 1963 to million cubic feet in 1975 and the softwood veneer-log harvest increased from cubic feet to million cubic feet. The veneer log production was stimulated by the establishment of a softwood plywood plant on Maryland's eastern shore in 1967. This plywood plant is the only one using. Softwoods in the Northeast. In 1975, most of the industrial timber harvest came from eastern Maryland (fig. The 17 million cubic-foot harvest from the South Eastern Shore Unit represented 39 percent of the state total. Although the North Central Unit ranked second in volume harvested - 11 million cubic feet - a greater volume of sawlogs was harvested from this unit than from any of the other units. The Western Unit had the largest pulpwood harvest from hardwoods; the million cubic feet of pulpwood production was 89 percent of the hardwood total for Maryland. Charles County, in the Southern Unit, was the state's largest hardwood sawlog producer in 1975 million board feet); Worcester County produced the largest volume of softwood saw logs million board feet). Download or read book Report of the State Board of Forestry written by Maryland State Board of Forestry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the State Board of Forestry: For 1906 and 1907 The Maryland State Board of Forestry was created by the Legislature of 1906 under an act, ' To establish a State Board of Forestry, and to promote forest interests and arboriculture in the State. The board was organized in May, 1906, and has since been actively engaged in promoting an interest in forestry, and in ascertaining the forest condi tions and needs of the State. The first forest work under State initiative was done in 1900 by the Maryland Geological Survey in cooperation with the United States Forestry Bureau, when a study of the forest conditions in Allegany County was made, and a report published. This was in the nature of an economic survey, to ascertain the relation which the forests bear to other natural resources of the State, their value, and means of im provement. The study of Allegany County was followed by similar work in Cecil, Calvert, Garrett and St. Mary's Counties, the results of which have already been published; investigations were also taken up in Worcester, Kent and Harford Counties, a map of the first county showing the forest growth by commercial types, having been issued. These reports supplied accurate information on the forest conditions and needs of the counties, and furnished an intelligent basis for gen eral legislation. As a result of these forest studies it became apparent that the importance of the work and its special needs required a sepa rate State department to properly handle it. This led to the introduc tion of the Forestry Bill in the last Legislature, and its prompt enact ment into law. Since July, 1906, all of the State forest work has been conducted by the State Board of Forestry, through a State Forester, who is directly responsible to the Board for his official acts. The main lines of activity of the Board of Forestry are briefly set forth under the following headings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
