Of the Forest of Essex in particular we have little or no information from the County historians, beyond occasional notices of the holders of Forest offices, or of the position of their estates within the bounds of the Forest. Yet the district which from time immemorial was Royal Forest formed no small part of the County; and nearly the whole of it was at one time or another made subject to the Forest laws.
