This book combines two works, A translation of the 3,000 year old Zhou Yi (Yi Jing), the most important divination text of early China and one of the foundation texts of Chinese civilization. An arrangement of verses from the Forest of Changes (Jiao Shi Yi Lin), a 2,000 year old divining text from the Han Dynasty. This radical rearrangement of texts drawn from the Forest make this work a usable oracle, providing several layers of divinatory text to work with. The full version of the Forest of Changes is available from the same translator. When it was issued in 2016, it was the first complete translation of the Forest of Changes in a western language. The Zhou Yi, the original ancient text beneath the layers of commentary built up over the centuries, has been interpreted by many, many students over the centuries. I have translated the Yi as closely as I can to the ancient traditions of 1,000 BCE, an oracle used to determine the auspiciousness of rituals, particularly the rituals of the cult of the Ancestors. The Jiao Shi Yi Lin, written some 1,000 years after the Zhou Yi, expands the text of the Yi by providing a verse for each of the 4096 combinations of the 64 hexagrams. Unfortunately if there was some correlation between the texts of the Yi and the Forest it has been lost over the years, along with a large chunk of the Forest text. This book resolves the problems with the Forest of Changes as an oracle by realigning it with the Yi Jing using the favorability of the texts, as well as keywords and images drawn from the Yi. In addition I have divided up the Forest texts into three layers for each Yi text based on portions of society for whom the Forest was used: Merchant/Traveler, Farmer/Shaman and Noble/Scholar. These can also be viewed as the Three Powers, Earth, Heaven and Humanity. By providing three texts, along with an extra 'All Lines Change' text for each Yi Jing hexagram, the book is able to offer more detailed answers to questions.

Originally a divination manual based on trigrams and hexagrams, by the beginning of the first millennium it had acquired written explanations and a series of appendices attributed to Confucius, which transformed it into a work of wisdom literature as well as divination. Over the centuries, hundreds of commentaries were written on it, but for the past thousand years, one of the most influential has been that of Zhu Xi (1130–1200), who synthesized the major interpretive approaches to the text and integrated it into his system of moral self-cultivation. Joseph A. Adler’s translation of the Yijing includes for the first time in English Zhu Xi’s commentary in full. Adler explores Zhu Xi’s interpretation of the text and situates it in the context of his overall theoretical system. Zhu Xi held that the Yijing was originally composed for the purpose of divination by the mythic sage Fuxi, who intended to create a system to aid decision making. The text’s meaning, therefore, could not be captured by a single commentator; it would emerge for each person through the process of divination. This translation makes available to the English-language audience a crucial text in the history of Chinese religion and philosophy, with an introduction and translator’s notes that explain its intellectual and historical context.

This new translation dispenses with 20th century attempts to discredit tradition and endeavors to recover the context of its early Zhou dynasty origins. As such, interpretation of its language is based strictly upon pre-Confucian sources to avoid the anachronistic readings that accrued to the text in its evolution from a book of divination to a book of philosophy. The book is an expansion of the Yi Jing, the book that is at the core of Chinese religion and philosophy. This first volume in a series of three serves two purposes. It separates out much of the traveling merchant layer of verses in the Forest. It also is the first attempt in over 1,000 years to repair the Forest of Changes. At some point between its writing and the Song Dynasty (960 to 1279 CE), the book was damaged badly, losing many of its original 4096 verses. A later hand or hands duplicated some verses, perhaps adding some other work of their own, leaving us with the current hodgepodge of a text. The trouble with that reconstructed Forest is that it is very negative, and the images are not lined up with the Yi Jing. Although it isn't possible to perfectly align the two works, I have made a first go at it, associating Forest verse to Yi Jing text based on favorability and image to create a working oracle. I have also added an element. The Merchant's and Traveler's Forest of Changes has All Lines Change texts for all the hexagrams rather than just the first two as in the original Yi Jing. This brings the number of texts to 512 and adds an element to use interpreting results. Helpful for making decisions, particularly regarding business and travel obviously, and also an excellent work to use in concert with the Yi Jing from which it developed.Many of the footnotes and glossary from the main edition of the Forest appear here to aid the user in orienting themselves in Han China as seen by a traveling merchant, a place that is distant in both time and culture from today's world.

It provides an account of the events surrounding the conquest of the Shang and founding of the Zhou dynasty that has never been told. It shows how the earliest layer of the Book of Changes (the Zhouyi) has preserved a hidden history of the Conquest.
