Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest-Land Owners of Delaware The sum of the weighted number of owners then provides an unbiased estimate of the total number of persons who own commercial forest land in Delaware. The acreage of commercial forest land was es timated in a manner similar to that used in the forest survey. The total area of privately owned commercial forest land was divided by the num ber of field plots represented in the ownership canvass. Thus, if a particular respondent owned one forested plot, his response was given a weight of one and his response was said to ac count for acres of commercial forest land. If a respondent represented two forested plots, his response received a weight of two, or double the acreage, and so on. Book excerpt: This summary report provides an overview of findings from the fourth annualized inventory of Delaware forests based on data collected from 2012 to 2018. Forest land area remained stable at 359,000 acres, and 51 percent of forest land is in the oak/hickory forest-type group. Forests in the State continue to mature, with 76 percent in large diameter stands and 65 percent in stands older than 60 years of age. Total live-tree net volume on timberland is 907 million cubic feet, and 92 percent of that volume is in growing-stock trees. Annual gross growth of 29 million cubic feet less annual mortality of 11 million cubic feet resulted in an annual net growth of 18 million cubic feet on timberland. Additional information on land use change, fragmentation of forest land, ownership, urban forests, species composition, stand structure, forest carbon, down woody material, regeneration, invasive plants, forest pests, tree health, and timber products output are also presented. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the 2013 results of the annualized inventory of Delaware’s forests conducted by the U.S. Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis program. Results are based on data collected from 389 plots located across the State. There are an estimated 362,000 acres of forest land in Delaware with a total live- tree volume of 936 million cubic feet. There has been no change in the area of forest land since 2008, however, live-tree volume in Delaware has been increasing. Forest land is dominated by the oak/hickory forest-type group, which occupies 53 percent of total forest land area. Seventy-four percent of the forest land area is in large diameter stands, 12 percent in medium diameter stands, and 13 percent in small diameter stands. The volume of growing stock on timberland has been rising since the 1950s and currently totals 811 million cubic feet. Between 2008 and 2013, the average annual net growth of growing-stock trees on timberland was approximately 16 million cubic feet per year. Additional information is presented on forest attributes, ownership, carbon, timber products, species composition, regeneration, and forest health.
