As is Well known, there is a large amount of waste in the conversion of a tree into lumber, shingles, ties, and other products. It is conservatively estimated that on the whole less than 50 percent of a tree finally goes into merchantable form under present conditions of forest utilization. The manufacturers of the more valuable woods reduce the percentage of waste through the use of finer saws and other means of economy, but even with these methods a large. Amount of waste must necessarily arise. The utili zation of this waste is one of the most important problems now be fore the manufacturer. Book Forest Policy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forest Policy Classic Reprint written by C. A. Schenck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Policy No-where more than in the United States is all public policy meant to be dictated by the people. For the benefit of the people and for the benefit of American forestry, a handbook might come in good stead giving the principles and the effects of a truly American forest policy. The present treatise, the contents of which are tabulated on pages 8, 9 and 10, does not pretend to fill the place of a comprehensive handbook: It is intended, primarily, for the use of the students attending the Biltmore Forest School; it forms the last part of an encyclopedic textbook of forestry (comprising silviculture, utilization, finance, mensuration and working plans) written by the author since 1898 on behalf of the Biltmore Forest Sch-001. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forests and National Prosperity: A Reappraisal of the Forest Situation in the United States During 1945 and 1946 the Forest Service made a reappraisal of the forest situation in the United States. Its purpose was to bring up to date and amplify basic information on our timber resources, to interpret this information in relation to the national economy, and to reexamine national policies and needs ln forest conservation. Previous analyses of a similar nature were made m 1938 and qq32. Forests contribute to the welfare of the Nation 1n many way'.s They are invaluable ln the protection of watersheds; they afford recreation and sport for people ln all walks of life; they are the habitat of many forms of wildlife; they provide range forage for millions of livestock But this appraisal dealt mainly with the timber resource. Other aspects of the situation were considered primarily ln relation to timber use. The reappraisal has made use of the large amount of information available from the Forest Survey and other activities of the Forest Service, and from other agencies. Such information has been brought up to date, checked, and supplemented Much new resource information also was obtained to assure an authoritative summary of the quantity, quality, distribution, growth, and drain of the timber resources in the United States proper. Only incidental attention was given to the forests of Alaska and to the world timber situation. Estimates of potential requirements for forest products and of unavoidable losses through natural causes were supplemented by consideration of margins for new uses, export, and national security. Book Wood Fuel Potential from Harvested Areas in the Eastern United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wood Fuel Potential from Harvested Areas in the Eastern United States Classic Reprint written by Eugene M. Carpenter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wood Fuel Potential From Harvested Areas in the Eastern United States Two-thirds of the forest residue in the eastern United States is concentrated in the South where it is equally divided between softwoods and hardwoods. The remaining one-third of the residue is in the North and is 80 percent hardwood and 20 percent softwood. Material from harvested growing stock ac counts for nearly 75 percent of the total. Another 16 percent comes from rough, rotten, and salvable dead trees from which products were not taken. All of this residue adds up to 138 million tons of material per year that could be used for fuel if conditions and technology existed to get it out of the forests. Although wood is not the only answer to the world's energy problem, significant plant investments are being made to use it to satisfy industrial, utility, and municipal energy needs. This trend should continue as the price of alternative fuels increases and as the infrastructure to supply and utilize wood fuel develops. Book North American Forests and Forestry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North American Forests and Forestry: Their Relations to the National Life of the American People Odern civilization attains its height, and produces its blossoms and fruits, such as they are, for good and evil, in the artificial life of the great cities but its roots are sunk deeply into the soil prepared by nature herself. Millions of years before the first spark of intellectual life in a humanlike being made the beginning of a rude culture possible, that mysterious earth-life which throbs in the multitudinous surges of the ocean, the stormy atmosphere enveloping the crags of the Sierra, the torrid sunshine of the desert, the splashy brook of the meadow, and the soughing pines of the forest, had laid deeply and lovingly the founda tions without which there could have been none of the rich, full, invigorating activity of city life. Cut the threads which connect the humanity of New York and Chicago with the remotest solitude, and civilized life must wither and die.
