INSTRUCTIONS TO THE AMBASSADORS AT CONSTANTINOPLE, AND TO THE COMMANDERS OF THE ALLIED SQUADRONS IN THE LEVANT. MR. CAN- NING'S SYSTEM OF POLICY. Before resuming the history of the steps which were taken with reference to the Protocol on Greek affairs, signed at St. Petersburgh on the 4th of April by the Duke of Wellington, it may be well briefly to recall to the mind of the reader, the principles, by which up to this period Mr. Canning's policy had been guided, in the course of this very difficult, and intricate question. In the early stages of the contest, whilst its effects were confined within the limits of the Turkish dominions, Mr. Canning held that Great Britain was bound in political justice to re- spect in the case of Turkey, that national in- dependence, which in case of civil commotion, she would look to have respected in her own. In process of time it became necessary, from the duration and magnitude of the war, to allow to the Greeks the rights of a belligerent. And furthermore, Russia being authorized by treaty to interfere, as a friendly Power, in behalf of the Rayah subjects of the Porte, Mr. Canning did not object, on condition, first, of those friendly relations being restored, and, second, of a joint disavowal of force, to a British Minister taking part in the conference on Greek affairs, which was to be called together, for the purpose of inducing the other Powers of Europe to add their weight to that ...

Book Imperial Russian Foreign Policy

Download or read book Imperial Russian Foreign Policy written by Hugh Ragsdale and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-10-29 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imperial Russian Foreign Policy aims to demythologise a field hitherto dominated by suspicions of diabolical cunning, inscrutable motives, and international plots using unseen forces of the gigantic, fear-inspiring empire of the tsar. The contributors, leading historians from both Russia and the West, examine Imperial foreign policy from its origins to the October Revolution, revealing a policy that, as in other countries, had a complex of motives - commerce, nationalism, the interests of various social groups - but an unusual origin, coming almost exclusively from the entourage of the tsar. The work is based largely on original research in Soviet archives, which only became possible after Soviet glasnost.

Book Historical Dictionary of British Foreign Policy

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of British Foreign Policy written by Peter Neville and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-03-22 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British foreign policy has always been based on distinctive principles since the setting up of the Foreign Office in 1782 as one of the two original offices of state, the other being the Home Office. As a small island nation, Britain was historically fearful of over mighty continental powers, which might seek to menace its trade routes, and naval primacy was essential. Britain must dominate at sea while avoiding, involvement in major continental wars and Britain accomplished this successfully until the end of the 19th century. After World War II and the Cold War Britain was no longer the global naval super power and they had to adapt to a secondary, supportive role. This was to be based on its membership of regional defense and economic organizations in Europe. The Historical Dictionary of British Foreign Policy provides an overview of the conduct of British diplomacy since the setting up of the Foreign Office in 1782. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, an extensive bibliography, and over 300 cross-referenced dictionary entries on British prime ministers, foreign secretaries, foreign office staff and leading diplomats, but also on related military and political-economic aspects. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about British foreign policy.
