Book Foreign Direct Investment Location and Competitiveness

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment Location and Competitiveness written by European International Business Academy. Conference and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses some of the critical issues now demanding the attention of International Business teachers and researchers. From several angles, the contributions analyze factors which may explain, and/or influence the relationship between the competitiveness of multinational enterprises (MNEs) and the countries in which they operate. More particularly, the four main issues address: the recent advances in the determinants and strategy of multinational business activity; the determinants of location competitiveness of countries; the competitiveness of emergent and developing countries and the locational responses of both indigenous and foreign-owned firms; and the policy challenges raised by the highly fragmented, and often uncoordinated international regulatory framework on government FDI. It is hoped the contents of the volume will be of interest to international business scholars, senior executives of multinational enterprises and national policy makers interested in advancing their competitiveness by engaging in outward, and encouraging inward foreign direct investment. This book addresses some of the critical issues now demanding the attention of International Business teachers and researchers. This book is published annually.

Book Foreign Direct Investment in the United States The Effects of Multinational Firm Characteristics and Local Factors on the Location Decision

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in the United States The Effects of Multinational Firm Characteristics and Local Factors on the Location Decision written by Francis Manago Ulgado and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much research has been generally done on the U.S. multinational corporation (MNC) and its foreign direct investment (FDI). Recently, the focus has shifted to foreign MNCs and their investments in the U.S. As the significance and magnitude of FDI have increased in the 80s, researchers have primarily dealt with the motivational and economic impact of FDI in the U.S. Fewer concerns have been placed on the intra-country locational aspects of such FDI. Though extensive research has been done on location decisions of domestic firms, much less is known about location decisions of foreign firms. Previous work that has looked into the location considerations of FDI in this country has primarily focused on secondary data concerning particular industries or regions of FDI, or on a limited set of variables. There is a need for more updated primary research. Although nationality has been considered, the impact of other firm-related characteristics and other factors in location decisions has been overlooked. This dissertation looks into the factors affecting the location decision of manufacturing FDI in the U.S. The objectives of this study are fourfold: (1) to identify the significant location-specific and firm-specific factors and their relative importance to location decisions; (2) to compare location decisions of US and foreign firms, and in particular US, Japanese and West German firms; (3) to investigate the location decision process including the important information sources used and the influence of incentives; (4) to explore the relationship between nationality, location factors and the level of satisfaction. Moreover, this dissertation seeks to provide a more focused and rigorous methodological approach by dealing with the effects of firm-specific factors other than nationality, and by addressing issues previously neglected. Through extensive primary data consisting of three different surveys covering both firms (foreign and domestic) and development agencies, hypotheses are tested, conclusions drawn, and implications for manufacturing MNCs and government development agencies are derived. The results of the study provide an updated view into manufacturing FDI in the U.S. and indicate that differences exist between U.S. and foreign firms in terms of location considerations. However, as other firm-specific factors are considered and important issues addressed through a conjoint analysis, differences across nationalities are less pronounced. Extensive similarities indicate that foreign firms are increasingly behaving like their American counterparts. In addition, the research provides evidence that the relative importance of location factors to particular investors in this country may have changed in recent years. Nevertheless, significant differences still remain among American, Japanese and German manufacturers in the United States.

Book Investment Strategies and the Plant Location Decision

Download or read book Investment Strategies and the Plant Location Decision written by Robert W. Haigh and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1989-10-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking contribution to the literature of foreign investment, this volume is based on an extensive field study conducted under the auspices of the Tayloe Murphy International Business Studies Center at the University of Virginia. Through in-depth personal interviews with the executives of 20 companies, the author examines the investment strategies and plant-location decisions of foreign corporations in the United States. In addition to identifying the market, cost, and other strategies that influenced the U.S. plant-investment decisions, the author analyzes managerial aspects of the plant-location decision-making process, describes specific location factors considered important by the executives interviewed, and points out salient recent trends in foreign direct investment in the United States. Divided into five parts, the volume begins by defining the objectives of the study and its research methodology. Part 2 examines management strategies, exploring the factors that influenced the investment decisions of the 20 companies in the study and delineating the operational strategies that guided manufacturing operations subsequent to plant start-ups. In Part 3, the author covers the plant location decision-making process, while Part 4 provides a company profile for each of the 20 foreign affiliates under study. The final section summarizes the research findings and presents the author's conclusions. In addition to comparing the present findings with previous work, the author also addresses the implications of his results for business executives, economic development professionals, and government policy makers.

Book Do Managers Behave the Way Theory Suggests A Choice Theoretic Examination of Foreign Direct Investment Location Decision Making

Download or read book Do Managers Behave the Way Theory Suggests A Choice Theoretic Examination of Foreign Direct Investment Location Decision Making written by Peter J. Buckley and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many empirical examinations of foreign direct investment location choice have relied on the use of secondary data and surveys on the choices made by firms about the form and location of overseas investment. These studies have two inherent and related problems. First, they rely solely on the location choices made by different firms and assume that domain of possible options considered were the same. Second, there is an assumption about the rules used by firms to make these decisions, yet the decisions are made by boundedly rational managers. After reviewing the literature, this study examines managers' choices about foreign investment location through the use of structured experimentation. The results show that in creating sets of investments to consider, managers appear to follow fairly rational rules. However, the choice of actual investments appears less aligned to traditional models.

Book Nation States and the Multinational Corporation

Download or read book Nation States and the Multinational Corporation written by Nathan M. Jensen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-21 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a country attractive to foreign investors? To what extent do conditions of governance and politics matter? This book provides the most systematic exploration to date of these crucial questions at the nexus of politics and economics. Using quantitative data and interviews with investment promotion agencies, investment location consultants, political risk insurers, and decision makers at multinational corporations, Nathan Jensen arrives at a surprising conclusion: Countries may be competing for international capital, but government fiscal policy--both taxation and spending--has little impact on multinationals' investment decisions. Although government policy has a limited ability to determine patterns of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows, political institutions are central to explaining why some countries are more successful in attracting international capital. First, democratic institutions lower political risks for multinational corporations. Indeed, they lead to massive amounts of foreign direct investment. Second, politically federal institutions, in contrast to fiscally federal institutions, lower political risks for multinationals and allow host countries to attract higher levels of FDI inflows. Third, the International Monetary Fund, often cited as a catalyst for promoting foreign investment, actually deters multinationals from investment in countries under IMF programs. Even after controlling for the factors that lead countries to seek IMF support, IMF agreements are associated with much lower levels of FDI inflows.

Book The FDI Location Decision

Download or read book The FDI Location Decision written by Frederic Blanc-Brude and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We investigate how different conceptions of distance impact upon one of the fundamental decisions made by foreign investors, the choice of foreign direct investment (FDI) location within the selected host country. We argue that the attractiveness of host country locations to foreign investors depends not only upon location-specific attributes such as labor costs, but also upon the location's proximity to alternative locations. We provide theoretical rationales for how and why alternative concepts of distance might impact upon firms' FDI location decisions, and explicitly model different measures of geographic, economic and administrative distance. Empirically we illustrate the use of a number of spatial regression models with a new dataset on FDI in Chinese prefecture-cities, and have shown, in this context, that geographic distance is not the 'best' measure of distance to use. We find clear evidence of spatial dependence between the cities based upon economic distance, with weaker evidence related to administrative distance. The distinctive contribution of this paper is to emphasize that city-level policy to attract FDI is more likely to succeed if the prefecture-city is economically (and administratively) close to alternative city locations, while any policy expenditure may fail to attract FDI inflows if the prefecture-city is distant from other city locations.
