Book Life and Public Services of Martin R Delany

Download or read book Life and Public Services of Martin R Delany written by Frank A. Rollin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the close of every revolution in a country, there is observed an effort for the gradual and general expulsion of all that is effete, or tends to retard progress; and as the nation comes forth from its purification with its existence renewed and invigorated, a better and higher civilization is promised. Before entering upon such an effort, it is usual to compute the aid rendered in the past struggle for national existence, and the present status of the auxiliaries in connection with it. In this manner, as the sullen roar of battle ceases, as the war cloud fades out from our sky, we are enabled to look more soberly upon the stupendous revolution, its causes and teachings, and to consider the men and new measures developed through its agency, the material with which the country is to be reconstructed. In reviewing the history of the late civil war, it will be found, as in former revolutions, that those who were able to master its magnitude were men who, prior to the occasion, were almost wholly unknown, or claimed but a local reputation.

  • Author : Caroline Reitz
  • Publisher : Ohio State University Press
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 0814209823
  • Pages : 150 pages

Download or read book Detecting the Nation written by Caroline Reitz and published by Ohio State University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Detecting the Nation, Reitz argues that detective fiction was essential both to public acceptance of the newly organized police force in early Victorian Britain and to acclimating the population to the larger venture of the British Empire. In doing so, Reitz challenges literary-historical assumptions that detective fiction is a minor domestic genre that reinforces a distinction between metropolitan center and imperial periphery. Rather, Reitz argues, nineteenth-century detective fiction helped transform the concept of an island kingdom to that of a sprawling empire; detective fiction placed imperialism at the center of English identity by recasting what had been the suspiciously un-English figure of the turn-of-the-century detective as the very embodiment of both English principles and imperial authority. She supports this claim through reading such masters of the genre as Godwin, Dickens, Collins, and Doyle in relation to narratives of crime and empire such as James Mill's History of British India, narratives about Thuggee, and selected writings of Kipling and Buchan. Detective fiction and writings more specifically related to the imperial project, such as political tracts and adventure stories, were inextricably interrelated during this time.

Book The Early Narratives of Genesis Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Early Narratives of Genesis Classic Reprint written by James Orr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Narratives of Genesis The subject A nave Men asked to speak on is a large one, and is complicated with many questions - critical, archaeological, scientific, exegetical. You will therefore bear with me if many points have to be touched upon in a cursory manner, and if some things have to be omitted altogether on which you would probably wish to hear me Speak. The subject is the Early Narratives in the Book of Genesis. By the Early Narratives are to be understood the first eleven chapters of the Book - those which pre cede the times of Abraham. These chapters present peculiarities of their own, and I confine attention to them, although the critical treatment applied to them is not confined to these chapters, but extends through out the whole Book of Genesis, the Book of Exodus, and the later history with much the same result in reducing them to legend.
