Book Bioaccumulation in Marine Organisms

Download or read book Bioaccumulation in Marine Organisms written by J.M. Neff and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-04-16 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large volumes of produced water are generated and discharged to the coastal and ocean waters worldwide from offshore oil and gas production facilities. There is concern that the chemicals in the produced water may harm marine ecosystems. This book summarizes the bioavailability and marine ecotoxicology of metal and organic contaminants that may occur in oil well produced water at concentrations significantly higher than those in ambient seawater. The contaminants of concern include arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, radium isotopes, zinc, monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, and bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate.The first part of the book is a detailed discussion of the chemical composition of produced water from offshore oil wells worldwide and its fates following discharge to the ocean. The remaining chapters of the book summarize the current scientific literature on the sources and distributions in the ocean of each of the contaminants of concern and their bioaccumulation and toxicity to marine organisms. This book will be of value to: environmental scientists in the oil and gas industry; marine toxicologists and ecological risk assessors in academia, government, and industry; government regulatory agencies concerned with marine environmental protection. The book advances the concept that bioavailability evaluation must be included in all ecological risk assessments and other environmental assessments of chemical contaminants in marine and freshwater ecosystems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The maJonty of the chapters in this volume are structured to include a balance between literature review, original data, and synthesis. The research approaches taken by the authors are generallyof two kinds. One centers on the long-term, in-depth study of a single species in which many aspects of its natural history are examined in detail. The other is a comparative one which involves investigating particular questions by examining species or by comparing groups of species that may include taxonomic andjor ecological affinities. Most of the chapters concern obvious aspects of breeding behavior including habitat selection, the effects of age on breeding, communication, mating systems, synchrony of breeding activities, development of behavior, prefledging parental care, and postfledging parental care. Of these topics, many relate directly to the advantages and disadvantages of coloniality-a conspicuous behavior pattern in marine birds. As such, they provide para.picuou for the further study of coloniality and the social behaviorof many other animals. Other important areas of marine bird breeding behavior (such as courtship behavior, antipredator behavior, information transfer) have not been included because of space limitations. Since man's encroachment on the seashore and continental shelf poses certain threats to marine birds, a volume elucidating various aspects of their biology has multiple uses. As weil as being of value to ornithologists, the volume should be useful to managers involved with coastal planning.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a workshop, the scientific reviews and the contributed papers presented at the symposium. The document presents a brief historical summary of marine research in the Gulf; reports the discussions, conclusions and recommendations of the different working groups on oceanography (physics, biology, chemistry and sedimentology) and on the fishery (fish and invertebrates); then presents the discussions of each multidisciplinary working group, centered around how the St. Lawrence system may be used as a natural laboratory which will contribute to the solution of major long-term problems of conservation of natural resources and of the quality of the environment.

Book Breeding Population Estimates for Three Leach s Storm petrel Colones sic in Southeastern Newfoundland 2001

Download or read book Breeding Population Estimates for Three Leach s Storm petrel Colones sic in Southeastern Newfoundland 2001 written by Gregory James Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Breeding populations of three major Leach's Storm-petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa) colonies in southeastern Newfoundland were surveyed in the summer of 2001. As area of occupied habitat was not well known on these islands, island-wide grids were established to determine the extent of petrel breeding habitat, and occupied burrow densities were assessed by grubbing ... The population on Gull Island and Green Island did not show signs of changing, while the Middle Lawn Island population has decreased by 47% since this last survey in 1981. Declines in petrel and Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus) populations on Middle Lawn Island, suggest a local impact on breeding procellariiformes on this island. The establishment of a Iarge gull colony on nearby Offer Lawn Island may be affecting breeding tubenoses on Middle Lawn Island"--Summary, p. iii.
