Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flower of Roussillon: A Poem; December, 1866 Perhaps nothing in these pages will appear strange or improbable to those who are familiar with the character of the French People, and with the history of the French Revolution. That terrible crisis, when, in France the Old Monarchy, and the Old Nobility were swept away, produced some of the brightest examples of affection, constancy, courage, fortitude and self-abnegation which adorn the history of humanity, together with almost every crime that disgraces it. History fondly records the constancy of Madame Lavergne. She was one of the most beautiful women of France, forty years younger than her husband, and the beauty of her person was only surpassed by that of her mind and character. From this incident of the French Revolution the Author received the idea of this Poem, which, notwithstanding its defects, he trusts will be found worthy of perusal. Book The Flower of Chivalry

Download or read book The Flower of Chivalry written by Richard Vernier and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bertrand Du Guesclin was one of the great heroes of medieval France. His engaging, adventurous life story embodies all the drama and excitement of the Hundred Years War. The rise of Bertrand du Guesclin ranks as one of the most spectacular adventures in a fourteenth century rich in heroic tales. A poor Breton squire, ungainly and unlettered, he came of age at the onset of the Hundred Years War. Hespent two decades engaged in irregular warfare in his native province before he became a knight, and was recognised by Charles V as the captain France needed. Du Guesclin fought on campaign from Normandy to Andalusia, tasted victory, was taken captive - and was finally victorious again, over such famed adversaries as Sir John Chandos and the Black Prince. He won a dukedom in Spain, but it was as Constable of France that he spearheaded the reconquest of French provinces lost after the defeat at Poitiers. His body was laid to rest among kings in the royal basilica of Saint-Denis, enshrined as the Tenth Worthy, hero of the last Old French epic, but Du Guesclin's spiritlives on in literature and folk memory, as flower of chivalry, soldier's soldier, patriot, and liberator of his country. RICHARD VERNIER is Professor Emeritus, Romance Languages and Literatures, Wayne State University.

Book Photovoltaism Agriculture and Ecology

Download or read book Photovoltaism Agriculture and Ecology written by Claude Grison and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-01-26 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the challenges of our modern society is to successfully reconcile growing energy demand, demographic and food pressure and ecological and environmental urgency. This book offers an update on a rapidly evolving subject, that of modern photovoltaic systems capable of combining the needs of energy and ecological transition. Although photovoltaic solar energy is a well-proven technical solution in terms of energy, its development can compete with agricultural land or natural sites. New solutions are emerging: the installation of photovoltaic parks on industrial wasteland; agrivoltaics, which reconcile agricultural activity and energy production on the same surface; and ecovoltaics, which make it possible to make use of the unused surfaces under solar panels by developing ecological solutions capable of providing services to nature. These innovations are part of the response to the need to preserve terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, halt the decline in animal and plant biodiversity and participate in the development of a new mode of sustainable development and green economy.

Book Multilingualism and Mother Tongue in Medieval French Occitan and Catalan Narratives

Download or read book Multilingualism and Mother Tongue in Medieval French Occitan and Catalan Narratives written by Catherine E. Léglu and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Occitan literary tradition of the later Middle Ages is a marginal and hybrid phenomenon, caught between the preeminence of French courtly romance and the emergence of Catalan literary prose. In this book, Catherine Léglu brings together, for the first time in English, prose and verse texts that are composed in Occitan, French, and Catalan-sometimes in a mixture of two of these languages. This book challenges the centrality of "canonical" texts and draws attention to the marginal, the complex, and the hybrid. It explores the varied ways in which literary works in the vernacular composed between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries narrate multilingualism and its apparent opponent, the mother tongue. Léglu argues that the mother tongue remains a fantasy, condemned to alienation from linguistic practices that were, by definition, multilingual. As most of the texts studied in this book are works of courtly literature, these linguistic encounters are often narrated indirectly, through literary motifs of love, rape, incest, disguise, and travel.
