Book Flow of Dilute Polymer Solutions about Circular Cylinders

Download or read book Flow of Dilute Polymer Solutions about Circular Cylinders written by Turgut Sarpkaya and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow of aqueous solutions of Polyox WSR-301, with concentrations of 1.0 to 200 wppm, past circular cylinders was investigated in the drag-transition region of Reynolds numbers. Drag force, pressure distribution, and separation angle were measured on cylinders with diameters from 1/4 to 1-1/2 inch. Lift and drag forces acting on a NACA-0024 hydrofoil-model were also measured. The polymer additive was found to alter only those force coefficients which have a Reynolds-number transition region. Two distinct types of cylinder drag transition were observed: (1) At high concentrations, transition from sub-critical to a transcritical flow occurred at the same free-stream velocity independent of body diameter; and (2) at low concentrations and/or molecular weights, tripping from a sub-critical to a super-critical flow occurred at a well defined flow condition which was a function of free-stream velocity, body diameter, and turbulent pipe-flow friction reduction. In all cases, transition occurred earlier than that in the pure solvent. The polymer had a de-stabilizing effect on the boundary-layer flow.

Book Turbulence Studies of the Flow of Dilute Polymer Solution about Circular Cylinders

Download or read book Turbulence Studies of the Flow of Dilute Polymer Solution about Circular Cylinders written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was a continuation of previous investigations of the flow of dilute (25 WPPM) polymer (Polyox WSR-301) solutions about bluff bodies in the drag transition flow regime. Detailed measurements of turbulence intensity, and turbulence microscale were taken in the near wake region of a circular cylinder for several degradation states of polymer flow. Additionally, the effects of polymer degradation upon hot-film anemometer operations were determined. The results of this study substantiated the determinations on turbulence indices in polymer flows which were previously reported. (Author).

Book Flow of Dilute Polymer Polyox WSR 301 Solutions About Circular Cylinders

Download or read book Flow of Dilute Polymer Polyox WSR 301 Solutions About Circular Cylinders written by and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow of the aqueous solutions of Polyox WSR-301, with concentrations of 1 ppm to 100 ppm, and of the pure-solvent (tap-and distilled water) about circular cylinders of diameters 0.5 in. to 1.97 in. was investigated. Direct and pressure integrated drag coefficients, pressure distribution, frequency spectrum, turbulence distribution, etc. were determined for flows of solutions at all levels of degradation and compared with the reference measurements made in pure-solvent flows. During the course of the investigation, a critically degraded solution was observed to cause, at a particular Re, an unforeseen instability in the boundary layer and in all the other flow characteristics. This instability which most easily manifested itself in the form of an abrupt drag-force jump from a high subcritical value to a low supercritical vlaue, became the central issue in the investigation. Book A Study of the Wake Region of the Flow of Dilute Polymer Solution about Circular Cylinders

Download or read book A Study of the Wake Region of the Flow of Dilute Polymer Solution about Circular Cylinders written by John Norman Schimmels and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wake region of the flow of dilute polymer solution about a circular cylinder was studied. Polyox WSR-301 at a concentration of 25 WPPM was dissolved in tap water. The investigation was performed in the drag transition flow regime. Turbulence intensity, wake width, microscale of turbulence and frequency spectra were measured at various points in the wake region of water flow and polymer solution flow. (Author).

Book The Effect of Dilute Polymer Solution on the Strouhal Frequency of Circular Cylinders

Download or read book The Effect of Dilute Polymer Solution on the Strouhal Frequency of Circular Cylinders written by Richard Edward Kell and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow of aqueous solutions of Polyox WSR-301, at a concentration of 25 wppm, was investigated in the cylinder drag transition region of Reynolds numbers. Frequency spectrum and drag force were measured on a circular cylinder (diameter 1 inch). Frequency spectrum, Strouhal frequency and drag force also were measured on circular cylinders in water (diameter 1 and 1-1/2 inch). The polymer additive did not alter the vortex shedding frequency from that of water at the same Reynolds numbers. As the polymer degrades, a state is reached where concentration, Reynolds number and body size combination become such that the transition occurs in the boundary layer. Transition in the polymer solution occurred earlier than that in the pure solvent. At one Reynolds number, several regimes of flow may be observed as the polymer solution degrades. (Author).

Book Drag Reduction and Degradation of Dilute Polymer Solutions in Turbulent Pipe Flows

Download or read book Drag Reduction and Degradation of Dilute Polymer Solutions in Turbulent Pipe Flows written by T. T. Huang and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drag reduction caused by dilute polyethylene oxide (POLYOX WSR-301) and anionic charged polyacrylimide (MAGNIFLOC 835A) polymer solutions was studied experimentally in 1.918- and 0.455-cm ID smooth pipes. The POLYOX solutions tested are superior in drag reduction but inferior in shear-degradation resistance compared to the MAGNIFLOC solutions at corresponding concentrations. A three-layer mean velocity profile model appears to be more consistent with current and other data than a traditional two-layer model. The onset of measured drag reduction depends upon solution concentration and is seriously affected by shear degradation. (Author).

Book Drag Reduction of Degraded and Blended Polymer Solutions

Download or read book Drag Reduction of Degraded and Blended Polymer Solutions written by Thomas T. Huang and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 3.18-cm-ID smooth turbulent flow pipe facility was utilized to measure the drag-reduction characteristics of three polymer solutions: Polyox WSR-301, Separan 237, and Magnifloc 835A. A rotating disk was used to degrade the polymer solutions, and accurate control was maintained over the energy used to agitate (shear degrade) them. Quantitative data were obtained on the relationship between degradation and drag reduction for these three polymers and for blended solutions prepared by mixing two different polymers in various proportions.
