Book excerpt: The interaction between a 'model' collector, n-dodecylamine (DDA), and a 'model' Witwatersrand-type mineral system consisting of pyrite and quartz was extensively investigated by means of adsorption and microflotation tests and the measurement of zeta potentials. It was found that the presence of 'foreign' ions eg, calcium, magnesium, and ferric ions, strongly influences the selectivity for pyrite over quartz when DDA is used as the collector in alkaline media. The surface activities of commercial amine-type collectors compare favourably with that of DDA, although the former are more surface-active. The pyrite results obtained in the present work correlate with the pyrite recoveries obtained on a gold plant using DDA as the collector, ie, the selective recovery of pyrite from gangue (quartz) with amine-type collectors is brought about by the natural floatability of pyrite, and by the depression of the gangue by calcium and magnesium ions. Increased dosages of collector improve the floatability of the gangue, thus reducing the selectivity of the process.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide a broad, comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of current beneficiation techniques and processes that are used for both metallic and nonmetallic minerals; and for other materials, such as household and industrial solid wastes, that are also processed by conventional beneficiation methods in their standard methods of recycling and reclamation. Conservation of natural resources is an adjunct of beneficiation in that we have used up once-available deposits of high-grade ores, leaving only the low-grade deposits that must be beneficiated to upgrade them to sufficiently high levels for processing and metal recovery by current extractive technology. Conservation is also important in the reclamation and recycling of indestructible, noncorrosive materials, so that they may be recovered and reused many times over. The mainly physical, relatively uncomplicated, beneficiation treatments also save large quantities of energy, as these comparatively simple operations are all relatively low energy consumers, when compared with the later separation operations of pyro and electrical nature, which are very high energy consumers. Environmentally, both air and water pollution from beneficiation treatments are either quite low or can easily be controlled, and are gas-free and operated at ambient temperature, to make them one of the cleaner and lower polluting processes used in material treatments.

Such bubble flotation was applied very little outside mineral processing, until about 1960 when the dissolved air process, which has already had some success in the pulp and paper industry, was applied to water and wastewater treatment. The subsequent two decades saw not only a growth development for water and wastewater treatment, but also a growing cognisance of the similarities that existed with mineral processing flotation. Therefore the time seemed ripe in 1982 for a joint meeting between experts in these two major fields of flotation to put together the Scientific Basis of Flotation in the form of a NATO Advanced Study Institute. Attended by about 60 specialists, mainly post doctoral, from 17 countries, this Study Institute in residence for two weeks in Christ's College, Cambridge (UK) heard presentations from several international experts, principally the 8 co-authors of this book. The integration of the various scientific disciplines of physics, physical chemistry, colloid science, hydrodynamics and process engineering showed where the common basiS, and occasional important differences, of flotation could be applied to mineral processing, water and wastewater treatment, and indeed some other process industries (for example: pharmaceuticals, and food manufacture).
