Book The Sermons of Laurence Sterne The notes

Download or read book The Sermons of Laurence Sterne The notes written by Laurence Sterne and published by Florida Edition of the Works o. This book was released on 1996 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Every serious student of 18th-century religious thought will need to come to terms with this edition of Sterne's sermons. . . . The annotation alone will force scholars to explore again the notion that 18th-century Anglicanism, and Sterne's Anglicanism in particular, was devoid of conviction. . . . One of the special strengths of this edition is the editor's decision to provide ample quoted material from authors who influenced Sterne's work in these sermons. . . . Extremely erudite and sensitive."--William Spellman, University of North Carolina, Asheville This two-volume scholarly edition of Laurence Sterne's 45 sermons is the first complete reprinting of the text of the sermons since the Shakespeare Head edition in 1927 and the first annotated edition ever. The introduction and notes demonstrate Sterne's method of composing sermons and indicate, wherever possible, the relationship between the sermons and Sterne's fiction and other writing. In addition, the annotation provides numerous connections between the sermons and Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey. Melvyn New's long and illuminating introduction outlines the main elements of late 17th- and early 18th-century Anglicanism and explores how this theological perspective informed Sterne's message in the pulpit. The work includes four categories of annotations: Sterne's sources, his theology, his other writings, and his clerical and private life. As with the Florida edition of Tristram Shandy, this will be the edition that scholars will need to consult. Ecclesiastical and intellectual historians, as well as library scholars interested in the eighteenth century, will find this work of great usefulness. Melvyn New, professor of English at the University of Florida, has been writing on Laurence Sterne for more than 25 years. He is coeditor, with Joan New, of the Florida edition of Tristram Shandy, volumes 1 and 2: The Text (1978); and coeditor of Tristram Shandy, volume 3: The Notes (1984). He is the author of Laurence Sterne as Satirist (UPF, 1969); Telling New Lies: Seven Essays in Fiction, Past and Present (UPF, 1992); and Tristram Shandy: A Book for Free Spirits (1994).

Download or read book The Miscellaneous Writings and Sterne s Subscribers an Identification List written by Laurence Sterne and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since the publication of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman in 1978, the Florida Edition of the Works of Laurence Sterne has established itself as the standard scholarly text for all matters Sternean. This ninth and final volume maintains the exceptionally high editorial standards of the previous volumes, including comprehensive coverage of existing criticism."--J. A. Downie, editor of The Oxford Handbook of the Eighteenth-Century Novel "Provides, for the first time, a definitive edition of Sterne's provocative satire A Political Romance (1759) and a secure canon of his notoriously problematic fugitive writings, established through rigorous analysis of the external and internal evidence for attribution. The texts are meticulously edited, introduced with incisiveness and wit, and annotated with the formidable learning that has distinguished the Florida Edition since its inception. Brings to completion one of the great landmarks in the modern scholarly editing of eighteenth-century literature."--Thomas Keymer, author of Sterne, the Moderns, and the Novel "A model of editorial practice: judicious annotation, careful contextualization, and thorough engagement with critical commentary. Even more important is the manner in which this volume attests to the ever-changing nature of scholarly inquiry. Nowhere is this more excitingly evident than in the annotated subscription list, a valuable resource for anyone interested in eighteenth-century literary culture."--Elizabeth Kraft, author of Laurence Sterne Revisited

Book Laurence Sterne and the Visual Imagination

Download or read book Laurence Sterne and the Visual Imagination written by W.B. Gerard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full-length and comprehensive study of the illustrations of Sterne's work, this book explores the ability of Sterne's texts to inspire the visual imagination. It helps to explain why scores of editions of his fiction have been illustrated, some profusely: to fulfill the reader's desire, as well as the artist's compulsion, to visualize Sterne's words. Gerard places his subject in a clear and innovative theoretical framework which opens the field to general word and image studies. The author begins by examining the distinct varieties of pictorialism in Sterne's texts. The remainder of the study takes into account three remarkable series of illustrations-representing Trim reading the sermon, didactic sentimentalism in A Sentimental Journey and Henry Mackenzie's Man of Feeling, and the many and diverse portrayals of 'poor Maria' - to demonstrate the ways in which culture projects these texts differently through the various artists.

Book Laurence Sterne

Download or read book Laurence Sterne written by Marcus Walsh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth century was a period when the modern Novel emerged through the work of writers such as Laurence Sterne (1713-68), Richardson, Defoe, Fielding and Johnson. However, the writing of Sterne is recognised as influencing modern writing from Joyce and Woolf onwards more than any of the other eighteenth century novelists. In the last twenty years Sterne's work has become a focus for a flourishing body of work and significant debates in many new and developing areas of literary theory which include gender, sexuality, postmodernism, and deconstruction. Sterne's major novel 'Tristram Shandy' is regarded as deploying a range of 'post-modern literary devices' expected to be found in late twentieth century work rather than in work written in the 1700s. This volume combines the most interesting and stimulating recent critical thinking about Sterne and represents recent theoretical and critical debates surrounding Sterne's writing.

Book Laurence Sterne s A Sentimental Journey

Download or read book Laurence Sterne s A Sentimental Journey written by W. B. Gerard and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy continues to be as widely read and admired as upon its first appearance. Deemed more accessible than Sterne’s Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, and often assigned as a college text, A Sentimental Journey has received its share of critical attention, but—unlike Tristram Shandy—to date it has not been the subject of a dedicated anthology of critical essays. This volume fills that gap with fresh perspectives on Sterne’s novel that will appeal to students and critics alike. Together with an introduction that situates each essay within A Sentimental Journey’s reception history, and a tailpiece detailing the culmination of Sterne’s career and his death, this volume presents a cohesive approach to this significant text that is simultaneously grounded and revelatory.
