Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Florence Nightingale, of the Southern Army: Experiences of Mrs. Ella K. Newsom, Confederate Nurse in the Great War of 1861-65 In the compilation of this narrative an attempt has been made to present a sketch of a devoted Christian woman who did her duty faithfully as she saw it. No effort has been made to give a false coloring to any of the pictures exhibited, but to present a straightforward narrative collected from imperfectly preserved data. The writer incorporates here a part of what he wrote for the American Tribune of Indianapolis in 1895. "Viewed from the standpoint of a Northern resident and a participant in the Union Army for the defense of the nation, the effort to establish a Southern Confederacy was not only a physical and a moral impossibility, but its success, had it been accomplished, would have been a dire calamity even to those who were supposed to be the greatest recipients of benefits. This belief, however, does not detract in the least degree from according sincerity of purpose, evidence of the highest bravery and consecration, and the most unselfish devotion to those involved on the other side of the bloody controversy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The War Between the States had the by-product of great advancement in the knowledge of medical care, especially in victims of trauma. It also made for great strides in the development of the profession of Nursing. When the war began in 1861, no organized medical corps, field hospital services, or military nurses existed. Neither were there any nursing credentials. The label, "nurse," was ambiguous, and could mean an officer's wife who went with her husband to the battlefield, a woman who came to care for a wounded son or husband, and stayed to care for others, or a member of a Catholic religious community that performed works of mercy, including the nursing of the sick. It was with the Sisters of Mercy in Memphis Tennessee that our heroine received her first training. While you may have heard of Clara Barton, Dorothea Dix, or even Kate Cumming, you may not have heard of Ella King Newsom. This is the story of a heroic and unselfish woman whose devotion to the cause of the sick and suffering soldiers of the Confederate army, richly deserves to be called the "Florence Nightingale of the South." While a Southerner and supporter of the Confederate cause, Mrs. Newsom made no distinction between the North and the South when it came to nursing the wounded and sick. This book was written by a former Union Volunteer whom she had comforted and nursed while he was in his teens. Never forgetting her tender care, he, when learning of her misfortunes in later life, determined to help provide for her. This book was part of that project. It deals primarily with the Western Theater of the War.

Less has been written about the women who served the southern soldiers in their appallingly inadequate hospitals. One of those women was Mrs. Ella K. Newsom and this is her story. Compared by journalist Fraise Richard to the much more famous Florence Nightingale, Mrs. Newsom was a tireless worker for the relief of all who came in her care, Confederate or Union.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In antebellum society, women were regarded as ideal nurses because of their sympathetic natures. However, they were expected to exercise their talents only in the home; nursing strange men in hospitals was considered inappropriate, if not indecent. Nevertheless, in defiance of tradition, Confederate women set up hospitals early in the Civil War and organized volunteers to care for the increasing number of sick and wounded soldiers. As a fledgling government engaged in a long and bloody war, the Confederacy relied on this female labor, which prompted a new understanding of women’s place in public life and a shift in gender roles. Challenging the assumption that Southern women’s contributions to the war effort were less systematic and organized than those of Union women, Worth a Dozen Men looks at the Civil War as a watershed moment for Southern women. Female nurses in the South played a critical role in raising army and civilian morale and reducing mortality rates, thus allowing the South to continue fighting. They embodied a new model of heroic energy and nationalism, and came to be seen as the female equivalent of soldiers. Moreover, nursing provided them with a foundation for pro-Confederate political activity, both during and after the war, when gender roles and race relations underwent dramatic changes. Worth a Dozen Men chronicles the Southern wartime nursing experience, tracking the course of the conflict from the initial burst of Confederate nationalism to the shock and sorrow of losing the war. Through newspapers and official records, as well as letters, diaries, and memoirs—not only those of the remarkable and dedicated women who participated, but also of the doctors with whom they served, their soldier patients, and the patients’ families—a comprehensive picture of what it was like to be a nurse in the South during the Civil War emerges.

Book Fannie Beers Civil War

Download or read book Fannie Beers Civil War written by Fannie A. Beers and published by . This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dauntless and humane woman of the South Young Fannie Beers, a Connecticut girl, married southerner A. P. Beers when he was a student at Yale. Naturally, she accompanied him to his home and there she formed an abiding affection for the land and its people. When the Civil War broke out her husband enlisted in the Confederate Army becoming a sergeant in Fenner's Louisiana Light Artillery. Fannie, with one small child and pregnant with a second, moved back to the security of her Northern family. Her support for the Southern cause and her refusal to renounce it soon made her position in the north untenable, so she returned to her husband's side. She thereafter worked with great commitment as a nurse with Confederate forces in Virginia, Georgia and Alabama, finally becoming a matron at a field hospital. So high was the regard in which she held that she earned the appellation, 'The Florence Nightingale of the South'. This is a remarkable story in Fannie's own words and was originally published under the title of Memories.
