Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flora of Essex County, Massachusetts The following enumeration of the plants of Essex County has been prepared, after a careful examination of the work of the earlier botanists and diligent search in almost every portion of the county for species not previously noticed. With so few persons devoting themselves to the study of botany or the collection of specimens, particularly of the lower orders of plants, it would be impossible to present an absolutely complete list, and perhaps with even the greatest facilities no one has succeeded in so doing for any region. Almost the only extended collection of dried specimens of county plants were those of the late Mr. Oakes, so that there really exists no very great foundation upon which to build other than the herbarium recently collected, and the writings of the more reliable among the earlier botanists, who for nearly a century have now and then appeared upon the scene. Book The Birds of Essex County Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Birds of Essex County Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by Charles Wendell Townsend and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Essex County, Massachusetts IN the following pages will be found first, a brief description of Essex County with a general view of its geology, ora, and faunal areas; then follow chapters on the regions and their birds, peculiar to a maritime county, namely, the ocean, the sand beaches, the sand dunes, and the salt marshes. There are also chapters on the fresh marshes and on the ponds and their birds. These are followed by Chapters on the records from lighthouses along the coast and on the ornithological history of Essex County. In the introduction to the Annotated List, the names of many ornitho logical workers are given who have generously contributed their notes and Observations, and to all of these I wish here to express my sincere thanks. Particularly I wish to thank Mr. William Brewster for the use of his collection and for the identification of doubtful specimens; Mr. Walter Deane for many kindnesses and for reviewing the botanical part of this list; Mr. W. A. Jeffries for his own notes and those of his brother, the late Dr. J. A. Jeffries; Mr. J. A. Farley for many valuable records, especially as regards the breeding of birds of prey; Dr. J. C. Phillips for his records from Wenham Lake; Mr. John Rob inson and Mr. John H. Sears for their kindness to me in the use of the col lection of the Peabody Academy, at Salem; Mr. Ralph Hoffmann for much kindly help and criticism, and Dr. Glover M. Allen for his great assistance in revising manuscript and proof. I am also indebted to him for the map. I have attempted to make the Annotated List. As' complete and accurate as possible, and have banished to a doubtful list all birds about which there is the least question. In the case of most of the water birds the annotations are given fully from my own observations not only as to the habits of the birds but also as to their call notes and their recognition in the field, as these birds are so characteristic of a seashore region, and are so often slightly treated in the books. Of the land birds, a few only of the characteristic and interesting ones are treated at any length, such as the Horned Lark, American Crow, Snow Bunting, Lapland Longspur, Ipswich Sparrow, Sharp-tailed Sparrows, the Swal lows, and a few others. A Bibliography is given at the end of the memoir. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Catalogue of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of Worcester County Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Catalogue of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of Worcester County Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by Joseph Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of Worcester County, Massachusetts IN 1883 I prepared for publication the first Catalogue of the Plants of Worcester County, Massachusetts, containing eight hundred and twelve species and well-marked varieties. In 1894 the second edition, enlarged to ten hundred and ninety-eight species, was issued. In the meantime, by the kind and generous help of many friends, all of whom will understand, I hope, that whether their names appear in these pages or not, my sense of obligation to them is here fully acknowledged and gratefully remembered, more than a bun dred additions have been made. The arrangement and the nomenclature are those of Gray's New Manual of Botany, Seventh Edition, 1908, the book most likely to be used by all persons interested in the study of the local flora here given. In the hope that they may add some interest to certain plants in the catalogue, I have inserted references to a few plants, made by writers of recognized standing in American and English literature. I have not included writers like Thoreau in this country and Jefferies in England, whose writings abound in such references, on the ground that their works are more or less well known to all persons interested in wild flowers found in their respective countries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Plants: Growing Without Cultivation in the County of Nantucket, Mass The County of Nantucket comprises the islands of Nantucket, Tuckernuck and Muskeget, and a small group called Gravelly Islands. A list of their plants, including the marine algae growing in the surrounding waters or washed up on their shores, is attempted in the following pages. The islands are separated by channels from an eighth of a mile to half a mile in width, and may be considered geologically as but one. This island county is part of the extreme terminal moraine of the ice-sheet that covered the northern part of our continent during the glacial period, and is a series of morainic hills bordered on the south by sloping plains of gravel and sand. The hills are from forty to fifty feet high at Madeket, at the west end of Nantucket, and sink lower from there to Muskeget, while they rise towards the east. They reach the height of 91 feet in the highest of Sauls Hills, and of 105 feet at Sancoty Head, the highest land on the island. The formation is almost wholly stratified gravel and sand, deposited at the margin of the ice by streams that flowed down from its surface; but in the region of Sauls Hills, bowlders are scattered upon and in it, varying from a small size up to ten feet in diameter. The pine barrens, although farther south, are of similar structure, and Nantucket, as regards its flora, seems like a piece of New Jersey moved up the coast for the convenience of northern amateurs in botany, who cannot get away from business long enough to go collecting in that state. The writer has not been able to obtain any report of the productions of Muskeget and Gravel uninhabited islands and Mr. L.L. Dame has ransacked Tuckernuck without finding anything new; the most noticeable thing was the quantity of a common milk-weed (Asclepias obtusifolia), which was growing more profusely than he had ever seen it in any one locality before. What follows, then, relates solely to Nantucket, the large island of the county, with an area of about fifty square miles. Book Catalogue of the Ph nogamous and Vascular Cryptogamous Plants of Worcester County Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Catalogue of the Ph nogamous and Vascular Cryptogamous Plants of Worcester County Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by Joseph Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Phaenogamous and Vascular Cryptogamous Plants of Worcester County, Massachusetts It was at first the intention of the writer to prepare a Catalogue of the Plants of Millbury, one of the towns in the southern part of Worcester County, in which his own collections had been quite carefully made during the past four or five years. The number of plants to be found in the small area comprised within the limits of one town could thus be easily shown. While departing somewhat from the original plan, the present catalogue may be made a little more useful from its broader scope, although lacking in the completeness which it might have attained on the smaller basis. It is hoped that the publication of the present catalogue may lead to further additions to our knowledge of the flora, both phaenogamic and cryptogamic, of the county, so that as complete a catalogue as possible may within a few years be prepared. The present list contains eight hundred and twelve species and well-marked varieties, distributed among three hundred and eighty-seven genera. Of this number six hundred and twenty-five species are found in Millbury. The locality of those found elsewhere has been indicated, so far as known, by at least one reference. Worcester County extends across the State of Massachusetts from north to south. On its southern or Rhode Island margin it is allied by its flora to Southern New England. On its northern or New Hampshire margin it is allied to Northern New England. It lies at altitudes varying from 200 ft. to 2,500 ft. above the sea level. Only one point, Mt. Wachusett, reaches the latter height. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Phænogamous and Vascular Cryptogamous Plants of Worcester County, Massachusetts The intervales along the rivers are rich, but the soil of most uplands and pastures is poor, yet not without a due reward to the labor of the industrious husbandman. In the preparation of this list, so far as it contains names of plants found in other towns than Millbury, the writer is under great obligations to Prof. T. E. N. Eaton of Wor oester, who has botanized extensively in the county, and furnished valuable aid, as will be seen by referring to the list itself. For the list of species under the genera Naias and Potamogeton, he is indebted to the courtesy of Rev. Thomas Morong of Ashland, who has collected those genera very extensively and has also had access to the collection and papers of the late Dr. Robbins of Uxbridge the series of Potamogetons presented to the Worcester Natural History Society by Miss Emily W. Sargent of Worcester was also of great use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
