Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A selection of short stories containing the accrued wisdom of a career spent flying aeroplanes for a living. These stories express in graphic detail the challenges facing modern airline crews today. They deal with Technical, Environmental and Human Factors with explanations of the more obscure industry terminology. The stories tell the tale of the Human side of commercial aviation and allow the reader to join the crew on the line, in the Flightdeck and the Cabin as they face each difficult decision or challenging scenario. Capt James McBride is a Senior Airline Training Captain and Check Airman, with approval to train and check pilots in the Simulator aswell as in the Aircraft. He has had the advantage of flying many different aircraft types within Military and Civil arenas. He flew Air Display aircraft for 7 years and has operated Air Experience Flights for RAF Air Cadets also. In his own words, he has made many errors and mistakes and learned lessons from each and every one - many of those valuable lessons are now revealed here for the benefit of the current and future generations of pilots.

Book Human Performance on the Flight Deck

Download or read book Human Performance on the Flight Deck written by Don Harris and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking an integrated, systems approach to dealing exclusively with the human performance issues encountered on the flight deck of the modern airliner, this book describes the inter-relationships between the various application areas of human factors, recognising that the human contribution to the operation of an airliner does not fall into neat pigeonholes. The relationship between areas such as pilot selection, training, flight deck design and safety management is continually emphasised within the book. It also affirms the upside of human factors in aviation - the positive contribution that it can make to the industry - and avoids placing undue emphasis on when the human component fails. The book is divided into four main parts. Part one describes the underpinning science base, with chapters on human information processing, workload, situation awareness, decision making, error and individual differences. Part two of the book looks at the human in the system, containing chapters on pilot selection, simulation and training, stress, fatigue and alcohol, and environmental stressors. Part three takes a closer look at the machine (the aircraft), beginning with an examination of flight deck display design, followed by chapters on aircraft control, flight deck automation, and HCI on the flight deck. Part four completes the volume with a consideration of safety management issues, both on the flight deck and across the airline; the final chapter in this section looks at human factors for incident and accident investigation. The book is written for professionals within the aviation industry, both on the flight deck and elsewhere, for post-graduate students and for researchers working in the area.

Book The Pilot s Survival Guide

Download or read book The Pilot s Survival Guide written by Oscar Sigl and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a workbork designed to help you establish personal minimums that will keep you safe in the air. We've all heard of basic personal miniums, visibility, ceiling, cross-wind components. Despite all pilots having these "personal minimums" in their minds, we still have accidents each year. The airlines on the other hand operate by far stricter guidlines that help keep them and their passengers safe. They have thought of many of the scenarios that could get their pilots into trouble flying big jets, and set standards to help keep them out of trouble. This book is designed to help you think of and help you plan for some of those scenarios that can get you into trouble, and help you set standards that will keep you out of trouble while flying general aviation aircraft.

Book excerpt: This classic 1956 edition of the US Air Force Survival manual will be enjoyable reading for anyone interested in the Cold War, survival and the wilderness, or American cultural history. Viewers who enjoy movies like Dr. Strangelove, Fail Safe, and Strategic Air Command will find this a fascinating look into the mindset of the era's aviators. Survival under adverse conditions ranging up to hot war was a very real concern. Dozens of US aircraft were shot down during the Cold War. From the Foreword by General Nathan Twining: This Manual is designed for use of students in the Air Force survival training courses. It amplifies AFM 64-5, Survival, by including training information not covered in the kit edition because of weight and size of limitations. AFM 64-3 can also be used as a source book of survival information. It includes much detailed information which would have been beyond the intended scope of the smaller publication; it tells the reader not only what he must do but also why he must do it. Because of the global responsibilities of the United States Air Force, all Air Force personnel face the possibility of survival in a remote or desolate area of the world. It is the purpose of this Manual to prepare all personnel participating in flights on military aircraft for an intelligent approach to any possible survival situation. The reader is shown that nature and the elements are- neither friendly nor hostile and that the training and attitude he carries with him will determine his success in survival. The Manual opens with a discussion of the problems and techniques of general land survival: psy-chological problems, immediate action, camping and woodcraft, travel, clothing, signaling, food, and other related subjects. Then the ensuing chapters cover the special requirements for survival in the follow-ing areas: Arctic, desert, Tropics, sea, and sea ice.

Book excerpt: This range of theatre specific aircrew survival manuals follow on from the original book 'HEMS Helicopter Essentials', a survival manual that is totally different and hopefully like no other. In an ideal world, if you follow the first half of that manual, you should not need the second part. The aim of these smaller manuals is to alleviate the all too common 'generic survival skills' that are found in many textbooks. Each area of the planet is wonderful, but vastly different. As aircrew we can find ourselves over a multitude of environments during a routine flight, so rather than overload our knowledge if we keep to the basic principles of survival and a few basic regional specific items...Just the 'Essentials' that will keep you alive.
