Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workplace flexibility has captivated the attention of both Human Resources academics and practitioners. Over the years there have been multiple studies evaluating the benefits and drawbacks of workplace flexibility, focusing either on the employee or employer perspective. In spite of the ample body of research, there are few empirical studies that simultaneously assess the benefits and drawback for both employers and employees while considering flexible work practices in relation to each other. This study tested the idea that there are mutual benefits for both parties and examined in what format does flexibility present these mutual benefits. In undertaking this task the study utilized a national level survey (WERS 2004) and proposed a level of analysis across multiple organizations as opposed to individual workplaces. The results show that the proposed mutual benefits have not been identified, however it revealed that, contrary to authoritative standpoints flexibility seems to benefit the employees more than the employers. Limitations of the study, further directions and practical implications are discussed.

Embedded in all chapters is a focus on achieving an appropriate balance between options, rather than providing a universalistic solution to all human resource management challenges.

Using data from a Fortune 100 Company, the research examined trends in thirty employee satisfaction variables over a six-year period and identified the relationship of the variables to various corporate and business unit financial metrics. The outcomes of the study suggest that there is a moderately strong positive correlation between an employee's satisfaction with personal development, levels of involvement and participation, use of skills and abilities, promotion practices, and opportunities for a better job and financial indicators of business success. By providing a research prototype, this book serves as a starting point for Human Resource and Business leaders who struggle to identify and to communicate the value of investing in assessing and improving work environments to increase levels of employee satisfaction. As the pace of change increases and the availability to resources decreases in most organizations, this study provides a way for leaders to identify and prioritize improvement initiatives that might result in both increased levels of employee satisfaction and indices used to measure business success.

Such organizations can be owned by their consumers, the producers, or the employees - whether through single-stakeholder or multi-stakeholder ownership. This complex set of organizations is named differently across countries: from 'mutual' in the UK, to 'solidarity cooperatives' in Latin America. In some countries, such organizations are not even officially recognized and thus lack a specific denomination. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) workforce is highly skilled and competitive and employees frequently work under intense pressure to ensure mission success. The Office of the Chief Health and Medical Officer at NASA requested that the Institute of Medicine review its occupational health programs, assess employee awareness of and attitude toward those programs, recommend options for future worksite preventive health programs, and ways to evaluate their effectiveness. The committee's findings show that although NASA has a history of being forward-looking in designing and improving health and wellness programs, there is a need to move from a traditional occupational health model to an integrated, employee-centered program that could serve as a national model for both public and private employers to emulate and improve the health and performance of their workforces.
