Download or read book Berkshire Dictionary of Chinese Biography Volume 4 written by Kerry Brown and published by Berkshire Publishing Group. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Berkshire Dictionary of Chinese Biography (1979-2015) provides a riveting new way to understand twenty-first-century China and a personal look at the changes that have taken place since the Reform and Opening Up era started in 1979. One hundred key individuals from this period were selected by an international group of experts, and the stories were written by more than 70 authors in 14 countries. The authors map the paths taken by these individuals-some rocky, some meandering, some fateful-and in telling their stories give contemporary Chinese history a human face. The editors have included-with the advice of myriad experts around the world-not only the life stories of politicians and government officials, who play a crucial role in the development of the country, but the stories of cultural figures including, film directors, activists, writers, and entrepreneurs from the mainland China, Hong Kong, and also from Taiwan. The "Greater China" that comes through in this volume has diverse ideas and identities. It is often contradictory, sometimes fractious, and always full of creative human complexity. Some of the lives rendered here are heroic. Some are tragic, and many are inspirational. Some figures come in for trenchant criticism, and others are celebrated with a sense of wonder and awe. Like previous volumes of the Berkshire Dictionary of Chinese Biography, this volume includes a range of appendices, including a pronunciation guide, a bibliography, and a timeline of key events.

Download or read book Chinese As It Is written by Conal Boyce and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese As It Is: A 3D Sound Atlas is a relatively small volume (radical index + 190 pages of text) but its size is deceptive as it provides a carefully constructed window on the entire language. How so? The core of the book is a 60-page table comprised of four columns and 400 rows. Into this matrix, the sound system is loaded, then each cell is occupied by one or more characters, for a grand total of 2394 characters. Of these, a beginner's subset of 903 characters is clearly called out, and in this sense the book doubles as a list of "First 1000 Characters" in the curriculum...but with several twists that make it potentially of interest to the graduate student as well. In particular, all romanizations are color-coded to indicate different degrees of "tonal weighting"; this is what makes the atlas three-dimensional. Here are some details about the book's special features that set it apart from all similar-looking offerings on the market: 1] Multiple aids to situational awareness: a] Rather than let the four tones of Mandarin be folded into a single dimension, they are made continually visible as the four columns of a 4x400 array, thus honoring them as an integral part of the "soundscape." b] For the romanized entry that accompanies each character, Dr. Boyce lets the color of its font provide an extra layer of information as follows: If there is a SINGLE second-tone word in the language, he prints the entry in red: tang. If there are SEVERAL second-tone tang-words, then he prints the entry in black: tang. If there is a PLETHORA of second-tone tang-words, then in green: tang. And so on. By internalizing this "tonal weighting," the student develops 3D awareness about where s/he is in the soundscape. 2] Avoidance of the 1-character 1-word fallacy: In certain contexts, an adult could infer that 'hazel' and 'wal' were meant as ad hoc abbreviations of 'hazelnut' and 'walnut'; but that fact would hardly justify us teaching a child that "A wal is a kind of nut," as though wal were a legitimate word. In this volume, the author is at pains to point out every hazel- or wal-type situation, rather than gloss over it, as usually happens in books that introduce h]an-z]i to foreigners. 3] Dr. Boyce has carefully chosen his "First 1000 Characters" for their pertinence to the soundscape as it exists in the head of the native speaker. At its core, his list of 1000 overlaps with other such lists, but around the "edges" it is significantly different, as a consequence of that premise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of our most important contemporary Chinese authors: a novel of language and love that tells one young Chinese woman's story of her journey to the West—and her attempts to understand the language, and the man, she adores. Zhuang—or “Z,” to tongue-tied foreigners—has come to London to study English, but finds herself adrift, trapped in a cycle of cultural gaffes and grammatical mishaps. Then she meets an Englishman who changes everything, leading her into a world of self-discovery. She soon realizes that, in the West, “love” does not always mean the same as in China, and that you can learn all the words in the English language and still not understand your lover. And as the novel progresses with steadily improving grammar and vocabulary, Z's evolving voice makes her quest for comprehension all the more poignant. With sparkling wit, Xiaolu Guo has created an utterly original novel about identity and the cultural divide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As each period in the history of the language sciences has chosen to focus on different key questions, the study of that history promises to open our eyes to the variety of interesting questions that can be asked, and answered – taking off the blinders of contemporary preoccupations. September 1–5, 2005, linguists from twenty-five countries gathered at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to share their passion for the history of their discipline. This volume is a distillation of many fine contributions from that conference, shedding light on the many different approaches to the study of language.
