Book excerpt: This study explores the validity of the five-factor model of personality (FFM) in occupational settings in Greece, examining its relationship to employees' overall job performance, job satisfaction, organisational citizenship behaviour and generic work competencies. Two hundred and twenty seven employees from various Greek SMEs participated in the study completing a personality and a job satisfaction measure. Their supervisors completed three questionnaires assessing their performance and their work competencies. Some of the most significant results of this study were the strong links identified between personality and job satisfaction and the moderating effect of job type on the criterion-related validity of some personality dimensions. These results are discussed in terms of the FFM literature taking into consideration the strong effect of Greek culture. The theoretical and practical implications for research and practice in Greece, are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Organizational commitment and job satisfaction are two interrelated work attitudes, and the kind of relationship which is influenced by the economic sector and the type of employment. Employees develop commitment profiles that relate differently to job satisfaction and its facets. Furthermore, individuals experience two different regulatory foci that relate to the forms of organizational commitment, and these foci develop into separable characters that moderate the commitment/satisfaction relationship. Since commitment predicts organizational citizenship behaviours, and satisfaction relates to these behaviours, then job satisfaction mediates the relationship between organizational commitment and organizational citizenship behaviours (OCBs). Study 1 investigates the research hypotheses based on the moderating role of the economic sector in relation to job satisfaction/organizational commitment relationships, especially in regard to the forms of commitment and the facets of satisfaction – extrinsic satisfaction and intrinsic satisfaction. Overall, 618 employees successfully completed the questionnaires (258 from private sector companies and 360 from the public administration). Then, distinguishable organizational commitment profiles were developed and constructed from the forms or constructs of commitment. Two different samples are used in Study 2 in order to test the relevant hypotheses – 1,119 employees from the private sector and 476 from the public sector. Study 3 uses the concept of regulatory focus, where the two foci relate differently to forms of organizational commitment, and these two states moderate the satisfaction/commitment relationship; furthermore, individuals develop four separable regulatory focus characters based on the two major regulatory foci. Moreover, the moderating intervention is crucially influenced by the employment status of the individuals. The research hypotheses developed in this part are tested through two samples of employees: 258 working in the private sector and 263 in the public sector. Study 4 examines the mediating role of job satisfaction on the organizational commitment/organizational citizenship behaviours relationship. It argues that job satisfaction mediates the relationship between the forms of commitment and OCBs, and furthermore, job satisfaction more strongly mediates the relationship between these forms and loyal boosterism (one of the OCB dimensions). The relevant hypotheses were tested through a combined sample of 646 employees, equally drawn from the two sectors. The results are discussed, implications and contributions analyzed, and limitations and recommendations for future research presented.

For instance, employees who do not possess team work traits can be moved to positions that do not require much engagement with others. Sev (2019) posits that a high job performance behaviour will result in achievement of organizational performance. He also points out that employees have different levels of efficiency and productivity. Some employees may exhibit hard work whereas others may show negative and non-cooperative behaviour such as absenteeism, negative acts, and narrow mindedness among others. These attitudes often result in contradicting performance at work. Syed et al., (2015) study on organizational commitment and five factor model of personality found that conscientious and openness to experience had a positive impact on affective commitment whereas neuroticism and extroversion had a negative correlation with normative commitment. Cubel et al., (2016) study on personality traits and productivity found that more neurotic employees performed worse, and that those who ranked higher in conscientiousness performed better. Bui (2017), points out that extraversion had no impact on job satisfaction. According to Delima (2019), there are five main personality traits that shape employee behaviour and in turn affect the relationship between these employees, customers, management and the general organizational job performance. The attribution theory will be used to try to explain the link between the five personality traits and job performance. According to Main (2023), attribution theory refers to the way in which people justify behaviour by trying to pin it on a cause. Notably, attributing causes to events can have a great impact on a person’s motivation and self-esteem, which are also affected by an individual’s personality traits. Understanding this theory in an organizational setting can help make informed decisions regarding recruitment and assignment of tasks to different members of an organization. Similarly, the Gordon Allport theory suggests that each individual has a unique set of traits that are the building blocks of his or her personality. These traits can either be cardinal, central or secondary. Cardinal traits are dominant in a person’s entire life, are rare and are often associated with one’s creativity and success. [...]
