Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fishes of the Yellowstone National Park: With Description of the Park Waters and Notes on Fishing It thus follows that the native fish fauna of the park is very limited. Except in Yellowstone River and its tributaries practically no fishes occur naturally above the falls, and in the extensive basin of that river the few species that do exist gained access to the re ion above the falls because of the imperfect watershed separating t e Yellow stone and the Snake River basins. The original comparative barrenness of the park in fish life was due entirely to topographical conditions. The physical character of the waters is, in general, highly favorable for fishes, and an examina tion of the streams and lakes of the park by Prof. Forbes in 18903 disclosed the presence in certain barren waters of an abundant in sect and crustacean food well suited for sustaining certain kinds of fishes. The theory that would account for the original absence of fishes in particular park waters as due to the high temperature and chemical constituents of the great volumes of water flowin from the geysers and hot springs is entirely untenable for severa reasons: First, native trout abound and flourish in various streams and lakes in close proximity to the outpourings of geysers and hot springs, and, secondly, both native and exotic trouts have been successfully planted in barren waters receiving the discharge of geysers and hot springs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fishes of the Yellowstone National Park The natural fish fauna of the Yellowstone National Park consists of hut a few species, owing to the facts that distribution must have occurred in recent geological times and that all of the streams leaving the lava beds do so by means of vertical waterfalls situated in deep canyons. Except in Yellowstone River and its tributaries, in Gibbon River, and in Lava Creek, no fishes have been found above these falls except where their presence may be accounted for by imperfect watersheds separating these streams from others. The known species of natural occurrence in the park arc longnose sucker, rosyside sucker, chub, silverside minnow, longnose dace, whitefish, cutthroat trout, grayling, and blob. Of these only the trout and grayling were recognized as game fishes, although the white-fish might justly be so considered. While these fishes were wonderfully abundant in the waters inhabited by them, the annually increasing number of tourists, many of whom were anglers, made it desirable to stock some of the previously barren waters with game fishes. An examination of the park waters by Forbes in 1890 showed that many of these waters were well supplied with crustacean and insect food and were otherwise suited to certain species. Referring to the supposed obstacle to the spread of fish life in the park, Dr. Jordan said that the waters of the geysers and other calcareous and silicious springs appeared not to be objectionable to fishes. In Yellowstone Lake trout were found especially abundant about the overflow from the Lake Geyser Basin, where the hot water flowed for a time at the surface, and trout could be taken immediately under these currents. It was noted also that trout had been known to rise to a fly through the scalding hot surface current and that they lingered in the neighborhood of hot springs in the bottom of the lake. Book Fishery Management Studies on the Madison River System in Yellowstone National Park Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fishery Management Studies on the Madison River System in Yellowstone National Park The temperature of the water in the Fire hole is in uenced to some degree by geysers, but only localized areas become too warm for brown and rainbow trout. Simonian (1952) recorded the in uence of Giant Geyser, the largest geyser in the park, on the temperature of the Firehole River. Water temperatures 200 yards downstream from the eruption rose from 64 f. To 75 f. At the point where the thermal water was entering the stream, a temperature of 115 f. Was recorded. Giant Geyser erupts irregularly with a minimum interval of 48 hours, and the temporary in uence of the warm water does not prevent brown and rainbow trout from living under such conditions The distribution of the brook trout in the Firehole was outside of the areas in uenced by thermal acti viry; they were principally confined to small trib utary streams and to areas above Old Faithful. The Firehole River originates in Madison Lake, located about eight miles south of Old Faith ful, and ows northward for about 32 miles where it joins the Gibbon River (fig. The ow in early September 1957 was about 35 cfs at Old Faithful and about 200 cfs where it joins the Gibbon. Many hot springs and geysers enter the river along a 12 -mile section below Old Faithful. The river falls about 700 feet from two miles above Old Faithful to its mouth, an average gra dient of feet per mile. It varies in width from 40 to 100 feet and in depth from six inches to over ten feet. Firehole Falls are 40 feet high and are located about four miles above the stream mouth; for the next two miles below the falls, the Firehole ows through a gorge in a series of cascades. The falls, together with the cascades, serves as a barrier against upstream fish movement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
