Book The Marine Fauna of the British Isles and North West Europe Introduction and protozoans to arthropods

Download or read book The Marine Fauna of the British Isles and North West Europe Introduction and protozoans to arthropods written by P. J. Hayward and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first part of a comprehensive two-volume treatise that describes and illustrates over 2,000 marine species, ranging from protozoans to fishes, native to the coastal waters of the British Isles and north-western Europe. The most complete account available of its kind, the books cover all benthic habitats, from the intertidal zone to a depth of approximately 30 meters. Each major animal group is covered, with information on the morphology, biology, ecology of representative species, and techniques for their collection and study. Estuarine and supralittoral faunas are also described. Identification is facilitated by dichotomous keys to families and then to genera and species. Short diagnostic accounts are given for each family and higher taxon, and descriptions of all species are followed by notes on their ecological and geographical distribution. Line drawings are also included to help clarify the material presented in the text.

Download or read book Fishes written by Alwyne Wheeler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-09-29 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fishes is a practical introduction to the study of fish remains from archaeological sites, designed for archaeologists and archaezoologists working in the field and in the laboratory. It provides clear guidelines for the identification of remains and how to interpret them. The identification and analysis of fish remains unearthed in archaeological excavations are invaluable factors in the reconstruction of climate, economic strategy, diet and trade. In this manual the authors discuss the importance of fishes in past economies and in archaeological research. They describe methods of extraction, fish anatomy and classification with the aid of numerous line drawings. The book also includes a survey of fishes most likely to be represented in archaeological sites and describes the biology of fishes in order to help archaeozoologists make informed judgements about methods of exploitation, size of fish caught and meat yield. This study is unique in making a realistic assessment of both the potential and limitations of the use of fish remains in archaeological interpretation.

Book The Catch

  • Author : Richard C. Hoffmann
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2023-03-31
  • ISBN : 1108962483
  • Pages : 583 pages

Download or read book The Catch written by Richard C. Hoffmann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive environmental history of medieval fish and fisheries provides a comprehensive examination of European engagement with aquatic systems between c. 500 and 1500 CE. Using textual, zooarchaeological, and natural records, Richard C. Hoffmann's unique study spans marine and freshwater fisheries across western Christendom, discusses effects of human-nature relations and presents a deeper understanding of evolving European aquatic ecosystems. Changing climates, landscapes, and fishing pressures affected local stocks enough to shift values of fish, fishing rights, and dietary expectations. Readers learn what the abbess Waldetrudis in seventh-century Hainault, King Ramiro II (d.1157) of Aragon, and thirteenth-century physician Aldebrandin of Siena shared with English antiquarian William Worcester (d. 1482), and the young Martin Luther growing up in Germany soon thereafter. Sturgeon and herring, carp, cod, and tuna played distinctive roles. Hoffmann highlights how encounters between medieval Europeans and fish had consequences for society and the environment - then and now.

Book Mount Grace Priory Excavations of 1957 1992

Download or read book Mount Grace Priory Excavations of 1957 1992 written by Glyn Coppack and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 805 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owned by the National Trust and managed by English Heritage, Mount Grace Priory in North Yorkshire, established in 1398 and suppressed in 1539, was one of only nine successful Carthusian monasteries in England and one of the best-preserved medieval houses of that order in Europe. First excavated by Sir William St John Hope in 1896-1900 and in state guardianship since 1955 it is acknowledged as a type site for late-medieval Carthusian monasteries. The modern study of Mount Grace began in 1957 when Hope’s interpretation of the monks’ cells about the great cloister was found to be simplistic. This was followed between 1968 and 1974 by the excavation of individual monks’ cells in the west range of the great cloister and two cells in the north range, together with their gardens, areas not excavated by Hope. The examination of the monks’ cells was completed in 1985 by the excavation of the central cell of the north cloister range, together with its garden and the cloister alley outside the cell. The cultural material recovered from these cells indicated the ‘trade’ each monk practiced, predominantly the copying and binding of books. Because each cell was enclosed by high walls, the pottery and metalwork recovered could be identified to an individual monk. In 1987 English Heritage commissioned the re-excavation of two areas that had been examined by Hope, the water tower in the great cloister and the prior’s cell, refectory and kitchen in the south cloister range and the guest house in the west range of the inner court. The contrast between this semi-public area of the monastery and the monks’ cells was dramatic. Coupled with this excavation was a reappraisal of the architectural development of the monastery and reconstruction of lost structures such as the cloister alley walls and the central water tower.

Book Everyday Life in Medieval England

Download or read book Everyday Life in Medieval England written by Christopher Dyer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday Life in Medieval England captures the day-to-day experience of people in the middle ages - the houses and settlements in which they lived, the food they ate, their getting and spending - and their social relationships. The picture that emerges is of great variety, of constant change, of movement and of enterprise. Many people were downtrodden and miserably poor, but they struggled against their circumstances, resisting oppressive authorities, to build their own way of life and to improve their material conditions. The ordinary men and women of the middle ages appear throughout. Everyday life in Medieval England is an outstanding contribution to both national and local history.
