Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there have been many books on cosmology and galactic and stellar evolution in which abundance analysis of astrophysical objects has played some part, this book is the first one for several years where specialists in the various relevant fields discuss the basis and implications of the subject as a whole. The major aim of the book is to bring together the results from high redshift studies and galactic studies in a coherent way and to cover relevant aspects of nuclear and atomic physics.

Book The Chemical Evolution of the Galaxy

Download or read book The Chemical Evolution of the Galaxy written by Francesca Matteucci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-10-31 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a thorough discussion of the evolution of elemental abundances in the Galaxy taking into account both spatial and temporal variations. For the first time, and in much greater detail, the observed chemical abundances are interpreted in terms of formation and evolution of the Galaxy. Observational constraints like the gas and star formation rate distribution are guiding this interpretation. Readers will find this monograph to be a unique research tool for expert scientists, graduate students, and everyone else who wants to get a deeper understanding of the chemical evolution of the Milky Way and galaxies in general.

Book Evolution of Stars and Stellar Populations

Download or read book Evolution of Stars and Stellar Populations written by Maurizio Salaris and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-12-13 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolution of Stars and Stellar Populations is a comprehensive presentation of the theory of stellar evolution and its application to the study of stellar populations in galaxies. Taking a unique approach to the subject, this self-contained text introduces first the theory of stellar evolution in a clear and accessible manner, with particular emphasis placed on explaining the evolution with time of observable stellar properties, such as luminosities and surface chemical abundances. This is followed by a detailed presentation and discussion of a broad range of related techniques, that are widely applied by researchers in the field to investigate the formation and evolution of galaxies. This book will be invaluable for undergraduates and graduate students in astronomy and astrophysics, and will also be of interest to researchers working in the field of Galactic, extragalactic astronomy and cosmology. comprehensive presentation of stellar evolution theory introduces the concept of stellar population and describes "stellar population synthesis" methods to study ages and star formation histories of star clusters and galaxies presents stellar evolution as a tool for investigating the evolution of galaxies and of the universe in general

Book Chemical Evolution of Galaxies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Francesca Matteucci

  • Release : 2012-01-05

Download or read book Chemical Evolution of Galaxies written by Francesca Matteucci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “chemical evolution of galaxies” refers to the evolution of abundances of chemical species in galaxies, which is due to nuclear processes occurring in stars and to gas flows into and out of galaxies. This book deals with the chemical evolution of galaxies of all morphological types (ellipticals, spirals and irregulars) and stresses the importance of the star formation histories in determining the properties of stellar populations in different galaxies. The topic is approached in a didactical and logical manner via galaxy evolution models which are compared with observational results obtained in the last two decades: The reader is given an introduction to the concept of chemical abundances and learns about the main stellar populations in our Galaxy as well as about the classification of galaxy types and their main observables. In the core of the book, the construction and solution of chemical evolution models are discussed in detail, followed by descriptions and interpretations of observations of the chemical evolution of the Milky Way, spheroidal galaxies, irregular galaxies and of cosmic chemical evolution. The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to students as well as to amend our present ideas in research; the book also summarizes the efforts made by authors in the past several years in order to further future research in the field.

Book Supernova driven Evolution of the First Stars and Galaxies

Download or read book Supernova driven Evolution of the First Stars and Galaxies written by Jeremy Steven Ritter and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy elements like carbon and oxygen are ubiquitous throughout the observed Universe yet only hydrogen, helium, and a few trace light elements are predicted to have been created in the Big Bang. Massive stars fuse light elements to form heavier elements during their brief lifetimes and die as supernova (SN) explosions that enrich the surrounding gas clouds. The chemical evolution history of a galaxy can be traced back through cosmic time from the highly enriched young stars like the Sun to the ancient, extremely metal-poor stars in the outer halo. This dissertation presents a series of high-resolution cosmological numerical simulations designed to explore the initial stages of SN-driven galactic evolution, from the collapse of the very first stars in unenriched dark matter halos to the formation of hot, enriched outflows in a first galaxy. These 3D hydrodynamical simulations of discrete, expanding SN remnants show that they were capable of enriching their host dark matter mini halos and the surrounding gas sufficiently to satisfy the theoretical minimum threshold required to form new low mass metal-enriched stars. Hydrodynamical biases skew our ability to trace the enrichment of individual stars back to a single progenitor SN, however there is hope that we can characterize the enrichment signature of the first stars from the elemental abundance trends observed in the most ancient, metal-poor stars. Primordial gas enriched by a single progenitor SN, assuming Type II-like yields, can have abundance ratios that fall within the parameter-space for the observed populations of extremely metal-poor stars. Finally, galactic outflows are a common feature found in the outer halos of star-forming galaxies. It has long been theorized that the combined effects of many SNe could be responsible for powering the supersonic velocities observed in these outflows. A pilot simulation is performed to explore the effects of a continuous succession of discrete SNe, exploding one at a time in a small starburst galaxy, the results of which will provide insights into the expected thermodynamic and spectroscopic features we might expect when future missions like the James Webb Space Telescope begin to unlock this era in our cosmic history.

Book The Origin and Evolution of the Universe

Download or read book The Origin and Evolution of the Universe written by Ben Zuckerman and published by Jones & Bartlett Learning. This book was released on 1996 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the origin and evolution of the universe encompasses many of the most fascinating questions in science. What is our place in the universe? How did everything in it get started, from galaxies and stars, to planets and people? And what does the future hold, for our star, and our universe? Recently, scientists have made remarkable advances in providing concrete answers to these profound questions. The new technologies of observational astronomy, with its ground- and space-based gamma-ray, X-ray, ultraviolet, infrared and radio telescopes, is truly producing a new golden age of discovery. This book presents the excitement of these new discoveries in the larger context of cosmic evolution. The distinguished contributors are leading researchers at the cutting edge of these fields, and they also excel in explaining these subjects to the broader public. They offer the latest insights into these rapidly advancing fields, covering the origin and evolution of the universe, the chemical elements, galaxies, the evolution of stars, planets, and biological life. Essential physical concepts are clearly and carefully explained at the introductory college level. Related concepts from chemistry, geology, and biology are organized and integrated into the discussions. An extensive glossary is provided, and mathematical detail has been deliberately kept simple, to make the chapters accessible to anyone with an appreciation of science. The result is stimulating exploration of the frontiers of modern science that will intrigue both amateurs and professionals.
