This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Monograph Celebrating the First 100 Years of the Baptist Church at Chapel Hill This is not a history. Dr. A. C. Howell several years age wrote a brief history of the church, treating the period from 1854 to 1924. He was the first to mine the old minutes. Brief sketches had been written as early as 185 8 but no one before had attempted to put together a story of the ensuing years. This is a Centennial Monograph. We have gathered together some interesting facts about persons and events connected with the first one hundred years of the life of the Baptist Church at Chapel Hill and we have documented them. We have collected some photographs which were about to disappear and some which would be difficult to procure later on. We have included a bio graphical sketch of the last six pastors of the church with a brief word about each one's ministry, compressed from a longer account which each man prepared himself. We have compiled a 100-year Statistical Table of the church and Sunday School and a 40-year Statistical Table of the wmu. We have appended a Centennial Roster of Members. Persons now living are too close to the past 30 years to write a history of them. The fuller papers from which we have worked, a collection of annual reports, volumes of church bulletins, min utes of committee meetings and other source material covering recent years will be deposited in the church archives. When the proper time arrives and the proper historian appears these will be available. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First One Hundred Years of Galeed Baptist Church, 1876-1976: Our Centennial Observance, August 27, 1976 As part of the observance of our One Hundredth Anniversary the church in con ference has given to the Centennial Committee the task of bringing the history of the church up to date. A History all past events considered together what a challenge! It was with fear and reverence that this committee began this work. A book of this length must exclude more people that it can include. Many of the truly great are unseen in these pages. No effort has been made to clothe leaders in saintly robes. Effort has been made to present them fairly in strength and in weakness and to show how God has used them in spite of their lack of perfection. We Would acknowledge with grateful appreciation those who organized our church and all who have been faithful to support and sustain Galeed during the past Century. We realize anew the trials, tribulations and dedication of our forefathers. We are strength ened by these trials and hardships. If time stands, God grant the people of our church in 2076 shall have cause to be as thankful for us as we are for those who served the past one hundred years. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial History of the First Baptist Church, 1813-1913 Among those noble men of the wilderness, one of the most noted was Elder David Irish, who preached the first gospel sermon in Cayuga County in 1794. He was born in Dutchess County in 1757 and died in Fleming in 1815. He removed with his family to Scipio in 1794. At that time the great section of our state west and southwest of Oneida and Madison Counties was an almost unbroken wilderness. Elder Irish was the first minister of the gos pel who raised the standard of the cross and preached salva tion by grace to the destitute population of this region. He was instrumental in founding some ten churches in as many settlements and baptized during his ministry persons. He had fortitude and perseverance well-nigh Paul ine. In 1799, being called with some of his brethren of the church in Scipio to assist in organizing a church in Phelps town, Western Hill, the roads at that time being wholly impassable for travel or horseback by reason of the great depth of mud and snow, he encouraged his brethren to under take to go on foot a distance of thirty miles, when all but one accompanied. These infant churches, struggling in the environment of pioneer settlements, rejoiced in their liberty as is evident by the circular of the Cayuga association which met at Palmyra in 1804: We have not to contend with civil rulers for equal rights, nor are we harassed by the civil officer and dragged to prison, or our hard-earned subsistence torn from us under the authority of human law, to feed a voracious and over bearing clergy, established by law and supported by the secular arm. Those dark times of superstition, bigotry and oppression, are to us, in some measure, over, and the bright mom of equal rights dawns upon us. The sun bf righteous. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tabernacle: Its History and Structure He has made considerable use of the much-neglected materials contained in the Books of the Chronicles, and has shown that when properly understood they are worthy of more credit than criticism nowadays is disposed to allow. That David should have left plans of the future temple-buildings behind him may seem too modern an idea to many readers, but it is borne out by archaeological fact. Such plans were made in Egypt and Babylonia centuries before the days of David, and some of them have survived to our own time. The profession of the architect is immensely old in the civilised East. One of the points upon which he has rightly insisted is the historical importance of the destruction of Shiloh. It is 'a point to which I also have drawn attention in my Early History of the Hebrews. That there should be no detailed account of it in the Old Testament is not surprising; Shiloh was the centre and home of what literary culture there was in Israel during the stormy period of the Judges, and its destruction necessarily meant a break in the literary and annalistic record. It would have been at the central sanctuary only that a yearly chronicle of events could be kept. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
