Book excerpt: Abstract: Vector boson scattering is one of the recent remarkable observations at the Large Hadron Collider. The longitudinal polarization modes of the massive vector bosons are strongly tied to the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism. With the Standard Model predicted Higgs boson playing a crucial role in regularizing the scattering amplitude of these longitudinally polarized bosons, vector boson scattering is a pivotal process in experimentally probing the symmetry breaking mechanism. A golden channel for measuring vector boson scattering at the collider is the electroweak production of two $W$ bosons with the same electric charges. Owing to its largest quark- to gluon- induced production ratio among other di-boson combinations, the process was also the first target of the ATLAS vector boson scattering program, with evidence made in 2014 and observation in 2019. This thesis presents the first measurement of the differential cross-section with the ATLAS experiment at $\sqrt{s}=13$\,TeV using 139\,fb$^{-1}$ datasets of proton-proton collisions. The process is studied in the leptonic decay channels of the $W$ bosons, effectively suppressing many Standard Model backgrounds. The process $pp \rightarrow l^{\pm} \nu l^{\pm} \nu jj $ is measured with the final state consisting of two leptons of like charges, two jets, and missing transverse energy. The characteristic vector boson scattering signature of two tagging jets, with a large di-jet invariant mass, separated by large angles, is used to tag electroweak-induced production. A combination of Monte Carlo-based predictions and data-driven approaches is used to estimate the various backgrounds. A statistical model of profile likelihood is used to constrain the background predictions and reduce the uncertainties following which the events are unfolded, and the cross-section is extracted. The fiducial differential cross-sections are measured in the leptonic channel as a function of several kinematic variables and are found to be consistent with the Standard Model predictions within uncertainties. An experimental precision of 10.2\% is achieved for the fiducial cross-section, and the measurement is unprecedented in precision and granularity for the process. The integrated fiducial cross-section is $3.51 \pm 0.27\,\text{(stat)}\,\pm 0.23\,\text{(syst)}\,\text{fb}$ and agrees with the leading order prediction of $2.97^{+0.28}_{-0.24}\,\text{fb} $ simulated by MadGraph+Herwig7 within uncertainties

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents cross sections for the production of a W boson in association with jets, measured in proton-proton collisions at \(\sqrt{s} = 7\) TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the large hadron collider. With an integrated luminosity of 4.6fb-1, this data set allows for an exploration of a large kinematic range, including jet production up to a transverse momentum of 1TeV and multiplicities up to seven associated jets. The production cross sections for W bosons are measured in both the electron and muon decay channels. Differential cross sections for many observables are also presented including measurements of the jet observables such as the rapidities and the transverse momenta as well as measurements of event observables such as the scalar sums of the transverse momenta of the jets. As a result, the measurements are compared to numerous QCD predictions including next-to-leading-order perturbative calculations, resummation calculations and Monte Carlo generators.

Book First Measurement of the Left right Cross Section Asymmetry in Z Boson Production at E sub Cm

This book was released on 1992 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The left-right cross section asymmetry for Z boson production in e[sup +]e[sup -] annihilation (A[sub LR]) has been measured at E[sub cm] = 91.55 GeV with the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) using a longitudinally polarized electron beam. The electron polarization was continually monitored with a Compton scattering polarimeter, and was typically 22%. We have accumulated a sample of [approximately]10,200 Z events. We find that A[sup LR] = 0.100 [plus minus] 0.044 [plus minus] 0.003 where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. From this measurement, we determine the weak mixing angle defined at the Z boson pole to be sin[sup 2][theta](lept/w) = 0.2378 [plus minus] 0.0056.

Book excerpt: This concise primer reviews the latest developments in the field of jets. Jets are collinear sprays of hadrons produced in very high-energy collisions, e.g. at the LHC or at a future hadron collider. They are essential to and ubiquitous in experimental analyses, making their study crucial. At present LHC energies and beyond, massive particles around the electroweak scale are frequently produced with transverse momenta that are much larger than their mass, i.e., boosted. The decay products of such boosted massive objects tend to occupy only a relatively small and confined area of the detector and are observed as a single jet. Jets hence arise from many different sources and it is important to be able to distinguish the rare events with boosted resonances from the large backgrounds originating from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This requires familiarity with the internal properties of jets, such as their different radiation patterns, a field broadly known as jet substructure. This set of notes begins by providing a phenomenological motivation, explaining why the study of jets and their substructure is of particular importance for the current and future program of the LHC, followed by a brief but insightful introduction to QCD and to hadron-collider phenomenology. The next section introduces jets as complex objects constructed from a sequential recombination algorithm. In this context some experimental aspects are also reviewed. Since jet substructure calculations are multi-scale problems that call for all-order treatments (resummations), the bases of such calculations are discussed for simple jet quantities. With these QCD and jet physics ingredients in hand, readers can then dig into jet substructure itself. Accordingly, these notes first highlight the main concepts behind substructure techniques and introduce a list of the main jet substructure tools that have been used over the past decade. Analytic calculations are then provided for several families of tools, the goal being to identify their key characteristics. In closing, the book provides an overview of LHC searches and measurements where jet substructure techniques are used, reviews the main take-home messages, and outlines future perspectives.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A measurement of the production cross section for a top quark pair in association with a Z boson (ttZ) is presented in this PhD thesis. Final states with exactly three charged leptons (electrons or muons) are used, taking into account the decay of the top quark pair in the lepton+jets channel and the decay of the Z boson into two charged leptons. The dataset used for this analysis corresponds to 36.1 fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded during 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The result of a profile likelihood fit ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production cross section times decay branching ratio for W{sub +?} in the electron decay channel in √s = 1.8 TeV {bar p}-p collisions has been measured using W → e? data sample obtained from the CDF 1988--1989 Tevatron collider run. For photons in the central region ({vert_bar}?{sub {gamma}}{vert_bar} 1.1) of the CDF detector with transverse energies E{sub T}{sup {gamma}} 5.0 GeV and lepton-photon angular separation?R{sub {ell}}{gamma} 0.7, eight electron W{sub {gamma}} candidates were observed. From these events, the production cross section times decay branching ratio for the electron sample was measured to be a? · B(W{sub {gamma}}){sub exp} = 17.0{sub -13.4}{sup +13.6}(stat. + syst.)pb. The W{sub {gamma}} cross section is sensitive to the anomalous couplings of the W boson. Using the W{sub {gamma}} cross section measurement, the absence of an excess of large E{sub T} photons accompanying the production of a W boson enables one to obtain direct limits on anomalous WW{sub {gamma}} couplings. The experimental limits on the anomalous couplings was measured to be -7.2

This book was released on 2005 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents measurements of the inclusive production cross sections for W and Z gauge bosons decaying through the electron channel with p¯p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The ratio of these cross sections is then used to extract the W total width. The Standard Model (SM) of electroweak and strong interactions is a collection of theories which together encompass what is currently known about the elementary particles that make up matter and the forces through which they interact. Experimentalists are constantly searching for violations of the Standard Model by making precision measurements of predicted interactions. The decay of the W boson is one such interaction. The rate of its decay is reflected in its width which is predicted to high precision using Standard Model-based calculations. Therefore, a high precision experimental width measurement would be very sensitive to any such violation. In principle the W and Z boson production cross sections could also be good Standard Model tests. However, a precise knowledge of integrated luminosity is required which is unfortunately difficult to obtain at the Tevatron. In fact, the W and Z cross section results can be used to obtain a more precise luminosity measurement. The data set consists of a total integrated luminosity of 177 pb-1 collected from September 2002 to September 2003 using the DØ detector at Fermilab.
