Book Hard At Work In Factories And Mines

Download or read book Hard At Work In Factories And Mines written by Carolyn Tuttle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children have worked for centuries and continue to work. The history of the economic development of Europe and North America includes numerous instances of child labor. Manufacturers in England, France, Belgium, Germany, and Prussia as well as the United States used child labor during the initial stages of industrialization. In addition, child labor prevails currently in many industries in the Third World. This book examines the explanations for child labor in an economic context. A model of the labor market for children is constructed using the new economics of the family framework to derive the supply of child labor and the traditional labor theory of marginal productivity to derive the demand for child labor. The model is placed into a historical context and is used to test the existing supply-and-demand-induced explanations for an increase in child labor during the British Industrial Revolution. Evidence on the extent of childrens employment, their specific tasks and trends in their wages from the textile industry and mining industry is used to support the argument that it was technological innovation which created a demand for child labor. Certain mechanical inventions and process innovations increased the demand for child labor in three ways: increasing number of assistants needed; increasing the substitutability between children and adults, and creating work situations that only children could fill. Specific innovations in the production of textiles and in the extraction of coal, copper and tin are highlighted to show how they favored the use of child workers over adult workers. The book concludes with a look at the current situations in developing countries where child labor is prevalent. Considerable insight is gained on the role of child labor in economic development when this historical model is applied to the contemporary situation.

Some days, just staying alive is tough. When she is rescued from prison by vampires, she thinks her circumstances are looking up. But theres a problem. Even though the supreme commander of the International Federation of Vampires has made it perfectly clear that shes not welcome in his underground world, that doesnt mean she can leave. Fiera soon learns there are two kinds of vampires: legals and rogues. Legals have all the power, and as a result, the rogues suffer. They are expected to endure hate, inequality, and prejudice at the hands of legalsand after centuries of oppression, a nasty insurrection brews. War is imminent. Predestined to become the legendary fire goddess of the Elders prophecy, Fiera is told that her fate was sealed before birth. When she discovers that the one who has always loved her will die if she is made a vampire, Fiera is determined to change her future. Although published as fiction, Legacy of the Elder is the authors true-life account of her personal induction into vampirehood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Luther's 'The Collected Works of Martin Luther' is a comprehensive collection of writings by the influential theologian and leader of the Protestant Reformation. The book covers a wide range of topics including theology, biblical interpretation, and the relationship between church and state. Luther's writing style is direct, passionate, and deeply rooted in his spiritual beliefs, making it both engaging and thought-provoking for readers. This collection provides valuable insights into the historical and religious context of the 16th century Europe, shedding light on the turbulent times in which Luther lived and worked. Martin Luther, a German monk and theologian, wrote these works in response to the corruption and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. His bold ideas and critiques sparked a major religious movement and forever changed the course of Western Christianity. Luther's personal experiences and strong convictions are evident in his writing, making it a valuable resource for scholars and readers interested in the Reformation era. I highly recommend 'The Collected Works of Martin Luther' to anyone interested in the history of Christianity, theology, or the Protestant Reformation. Luther's writings are not only historically significant but also intellectually stimulating, offering a unique perspective on faith and spirituality.

Book That Went By Fast

Book excerpt: Ex-logger and gas station owner Frank White says living to the age of one hundred is not all it’s cracked up to be but it has some plusses. When he trundles down to the local shopping centre in Pender Harbour pretty girls hug him and everybody in town seems to be glad he’s lived another day. But celebrity has its drawbacks—when he was only fifty and still had most of his marbles, people only wanted to know what was wrong with their car. But “Now that everything is starting to get hazy, they’re not satisfied unless I can tell them the meaning of life.” In this second memoir in two years, centenarian White sifts through his lengthy adventures trying to live up to those expectations of wisdom before deciding “Life just is.” But what a wild ride he takes us on! Born at the start of the First World War and maturing during the Great Depression, he worked variously as a pioneer freight hauler, pioneer truck logger, camp owner, garment presser, boat builder, home builder, excavating contractor, garage mechanic and waterworks operator, among other things. Then in later life he married the sophisticated and well-connected New Yorker writer Edith Iglauer and started a totally different way of life consisting of opera, celebrity dinners and world travel. His ironic observations on the differences between the two worlds make for fascinating and frequently hilarious reading.
