Excerpt: ... and fruitless chase determined to go to St. Salvador to intercept it. While beating up with this intention, information was received from different Portugese vessels, of the presence of the other ships of the squadron off the port, and renewed efforts were made to join; but strong northerly winds prevailed, and after struggling against them for a week Capt. Porter decided to run to St. Catharine's for water. Having been disappointed in his attempts to fall in with the Commodore, and ascertaining that the Montague, 74, had sailed from Rio to raise the blockade of the vessels at St. Salvador, Capt. Porter came to the happy decision to act for himself and push the Essex around Cape Horn, and by making a dash among the English whalers in the Pacific to live upon the enemy. It was a bold stroke, but the possession of the specie taken from the Nocton, and the knowledge that every whaler was well found in stores and provisions rendered it feasible. The season was late for doubling the Horn, the ship was deficient in provisions and naval stores, but as Capt. Porter explains in his own journal his course lay between the attempt, a capture or blockade, and starvation. The Essex left St. Catharine's on the 26th of January, 1813, and after a most tempestuous passage around Cape Horn fell in with the pleasant south-west breeze of the Pacific Ocean on the 5th of March, and was the first United States ship of war to spread her sails in that sea. At meridian of that day her people got a distant view of the Andes. The Essex was now fairly in the Pacific, though she had not fallen in with an enemy for two months. There was but one chart of the ocean on the ship and that was small and imperfect, the provisions were getting short and the vessel much in want...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Porter in the Essex: A Story of His Famous Cruise in Southern Waters During the War of 1812 Failing to gain any information concerning the lieu tenant, Ezra mcknight Set himself down to write the story Of that marvellous cruise Of the Essex, the United States frigate of thirty-two guns, commanded by Cap tain David Porter who was born in Boston on the first Of February, I 780. How this manuscript came into the hands of the editor it is not necessary to state. Book The a to Z of the War Of 1812

Download or read book The a to Z of the War Of 1812 written by Robert Malcomson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While some wars are remembered forever, others quickly fade away. The War of 1812 has all but disappeared from American history, which might lead one to erroneously assume that it was not terribly important. Although there was no clear winner, this conflict deeply affected all participants. The Americans were proud that they had taken on one of the world's greatest powers and were not crushed. Britain still managed to hold onto its colonies, strengthening both their loyalty and identity as Canadians. The only real losers were the native peoples, who saw their claims to the land further eroded. The war was far from dull. There was plenty of action on the diplomatic front, as well as stirring encounters on land and at sea, many of which are carefully described in the entries in The A to Z of the War of 1812. Others deal with the more significant political and military figures; ships and weaponry; and the role of the British, Canadians, Native Americans, and the fledgling and not yet convincingly "United" States. The introduction presents an overview of the war, while the chronology outlines significant events. An extensive bibliography provides access for further studies that will be useful to those discovering just how important this war was. -- Back cover

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Oa'oamanu (October), 1798, the Teii people of Taioha'e, Nukuhiva held a great koika (feast) for kin and foes alike at their ceremonial center on the island's northern coast. An estimated 10,000 Henua'enanans converged for this multi-day ceremony, which included singing, competitive dancing, and historical re-enactments of recent disturbing encounters between Te Ènana (The People) and Te Aoe (The Strangers). On the 23rd day of that same month, a group of people from Salem and Essex County, Massachusetts held a town meeting where they "voted unanimously to build a frigate of thirty-two guns, and to loan the same to the government." Frigate Essex became the first U.S. vessel of war to round and double the Cape of Good Hope (1800). In 1812, she served in the Caribbean and Atlantic, taking the first British prize of that conflict (H.M. Alert), and, early in 1813, became the first U.S. ship of war to round Cape Horn and cruise the Pacific. Within months, the frigate had captured 12 British whalers and the focused attention of the Royal Navy, and was in serious need of repairs. Fifteen years and three days after that initial Salem vote, U.S. Frigate Essex opened the bay off Taioha'e, and ignited a small chain of controversial, deadly, and oft-retold events that included some deeply intimate intercourses, a "war of conquest," and a formal ceremony of annexation to the United States. After a bloody battle off Valparaíso, Chile in March 1814, the well-storied vessel survived to spend many of her remaining years in the Royal Navy as Convict Hulk Essex. This thesis treats the ship as the main historical character and tracks her from inception to demise, attending in particular to the ethnographic and environmental interrogations necessary to keep the frigate afloat and functioning. By reflecting on the conventions of historical narratives and performances throughout, immersing readers in the primary sources of this project, and developing a concept of cultures as waves becoming, the analysis seeks to function as a koika that reconsiders what U.S. Frigate Essex might still teach us about ships and nations at sea in the world.
