Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in English in 1890, this book by Norwegian explorer and scientist Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) recounts the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888, an expedition that took two months. Learning from previous failed attempts, Nansen suggested crossing from the uninhabited east to the inhabited west of Greenland, an innovation that proved successful. Nansen's account was translated by Hubert Majendie Gepp and includes an introduction written by the secretary of the Royal Geographical Society. Volume 1 describes the initial stages of the journey, including detailed accounts of the equipment, the methods used for crossing the ice and the arrival of the party on the east coast of Greenland. The volume ends with a description of previous attempts to cross the 'inland ice'. Nansen, who later served as delegate to the League of Nations, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 for his humanitarian endeavours.

Excerpt: ...to with vigour, and did full justice to this nourishing and wholesome dish, with which we were more than satisfied. The two Lapps, had they said anything at all, would have called us heathens, for, as they explained one day afterwards, it was only heathens and beasts of the field that ate meat raw. But at the time they said nothing, but maintained an attitude of dumb despair at the fate which had thrown them into the society of savages, who had, as they often used to say, " such strange ways, quite different from those of the Lapps." They could scarcely endure to see us eating. I could, of course, easily have cooked some of the meat for them, but we had to be sparing of the spirit. We were likelv to want it all later on, and it was only two or three times during our wanderings in the floe-ice that we allowed ourselves the luxury of cooking anything. As a rule all our food was cold, and for drink we had either plain water, of which we had an abundance in larger and smaller pools on the floes, or else a mixture of water and preserved milk, which made a pleasant and refreshing beverage. This time the Lapps were treated to tinned beef instead of the horseflesh, and they seemed quite consoled for the first disappointment, the beef being pronounced by Balto to be " good clean food." How common it is to see things in this life turned completely upside down by prejudice!' In connexion with the above I will quote an answer Balto gave one day after we reached home to some one who asked what his worst experience had been in the course of his travels. ' The worst thing, ' said Balto, ' was once when we were drifting in the ice and were just being carried out into the Atlantic. I asked Nansen whether he thought we should get to land, and he said ..".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nansen's "Fram" expedition was an attempt by the Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen to reach the geographical North Pole by harnessing the natural east-west current of the Arctic Ocean. Despite much discouragement from other polar explorers, in 1893, Nansen took his schooner "Fram", specially designed to withstand the relentless challenges of the poles, to the New Siberian Islands in the eastern Arctic Ocean, froze her into the pack ice, and waited for the drift to carry her towards the North Pole. Three years later, Frederick Jackson, who had organised his own expedition to Franz Josef Land, was astonished to see "a tall man, wearing a soft felt hat, loosely made, voluminous clothes and long shaggy hair and beard, all reeking with black grease". After a moment's awkward hesitation, Jackson recognised his visitor: "You are Nansen, aren't you?", and received the reply "Yes, I am Nansen." Nansen's first task on his return was to write his account of the voyage. This he did remarkably quickly, producing 300,000 words of Norwegian text by November 1896; the English translation, titled “Farthest North” was ready in January 1897. The book was an instant success, and secured Nansen's long-term financial future. Although Nansen retired from exploration after this expedition, the methods of travel and survival he developed with Johansen influenced all the polar expeditions, north and south, which followed in the subsequent three decades. In his brilliant and spellbound first-person account of this epic polar expedition, Nansen vividly describes the dangerous voyage he took with his crew in the “Fram”, and the 15-month-long attempt to reach the North Pole by sledge, when realizing that the ship would not drift to the pole, he departed with Johansen alone and faced on foot the drifting ice, violent storms, the extreme cold of the Arctic winter and the attacks of wild animals, like polar bears and walruses. “Farthest North” is an unforgettable tale and a unique chance to accompany one of the world’s greatest explorers on one of history’s most daring expeditions.
