Book excerpt: Sometime in the late 1950s, on the steps of an unknown church, somebody takes a black and white photograph of an assembly of boys making their first communions. Above the heads of eight of the boys, who are all fated to die within the next twenty years, are small carefully ascribed Xs. When the picture is found more than fifty years years later in an abandoned steamer trunk purchased at a neighborhood auction, the pursuit for an answer to the mystery of those marks begins. The First Communion Murders is the story of that search.

Book Murder at Holy Cross

Download or read book Murder at Holy Cross written by Peter Davidson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-11-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 25, 2001, the nude body of Michelle Lewis, a 39-year-old nun, was discovered in her sleeping quarters at South Florida’s Holy Cross Academy. She had been stabbed 92 times. It wasn’t long before homicide detectives zeroed in on her killer: a young apprentice monk and former Holy Cross student, Mykhaylo Kofel. Under questioning, he confessed to the crime. But Kofel’s disturbing defense would not only rock the future of the upscale Dade County academy, it would also sound an alarm that would resonate all the way to the Vatican, making it one of the most sensational and controversial crimes in Florida history. What happened on that dark night in Holy Cross was unspeakable enough. The deeper the investigation got, the more sordid and disturbing the story became.

Book Martyrdom Murder and Magic

Download or read book Martyrdom Murder and Magic written by Patricia Healy Wasyliw and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martyrdom, Murder, and Magic: Child Saints and Their Cults in Medieval Europe is a comprehensive history of child saints and their cults from late Antiquity to the end of the fifteenth century. The child martyrs of the persecutions, including the Holy Innocents, were the first child saints recognized by the Church and their cults spread throughout Europe in the early Middle Ages. Alongside these cults, medieval society also venerated child «martyrs», victims of political or domestic violence. The increasing role of the papacy in the canonization process after the tenth century resulted in the veneration of saintly child confessors in the high Middle Ages, but from the end of the twelfth century, most children worshipped as saints were the alleged victims of ritual murder by Jews. This book considers the formation and transformation of child saints and their cults in the context of popular belief and the history of childhood.

Book excerpt: Parisian P.I. Aimée Leduc is attacked and blinded during an investigation. Can she solve her case without her sight—and when her own life is in danger? Parisian private investigator Aimée Leduc is all dressed up in her new Chinese silk jacket, supposedly a designer’s “exclusive,” for dinner with a difficult client at an elegant restaurant in the Bastille district. She is chagrined to see that the woman seated at the very next table is wearing an identical jacket. When the woman leaves her cell phone on the table, Aimée follows her to return it and is attacked in the shadowy Passage Boule Blanche. When she regains consciousness, Aimée finds that she is blind. Nevertheless, she is told she is lucky; the woman she was following was found in the next passage, murdered. Aimée is determined to identify her attacker. Was he actually a serial killer targeting showy blondes, as the police insist? Was he really after the other woman? Or was Aimée his intended victim?

Book Witness to the Murder of the Mad Hatter

Download or read book Witness to the Murder of the Mad Hatter written by Rich Smith and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EAVESDROPPING ON HISTORY. For lovers of history, there are many questions about the American War that have never been answered or that have been answered with obviously ridiculous lies. A perfect example is the lie about Fort Pillow. After Congress investigated the massacre it was found that eight of the men who testified as eyewitnesses before Congress were never there. But no one has ever asked who ordered those men to perjure themselves. Another example is the truth behind why Fort Sumter was shelled. The book is a page turner for those people who would love to eavesdrop on meetings where policy and crimes were fabricated. Listen in on a meeting Lincoln, Grant and Stanton are having on reneging on the Dix-Hill prisoner exchange program. Or listen in on a meeting Stanton is having with one of his employees John Wilkes Booth. Are you surprised? But most importantly it’s all about Lincoln. Keep an open mind about why he was so well preserved and why he behaved as he did. The book is a novel but most of the events are based on the evidence available as you shall see. That’s just a start of a book that took over 25 years of research to write!

Book Little Horrors

Download or read book Little Horrors written by T.S. Kord and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zombies, werewolves and chainsaw-wielding maniacs are tried-and-true staples of horror films. But none can match the visceral dread evoked by a child with an innocent face and a diabolical stare. Cinema's evil children attack our cherished ideas of innocence and our innocent bystander status as the audience. A good horror film is a scary ride--a "devil child" movie is a guilt trip. This book examines 24 international films--with discussions of another 100--that in effect "indict" viewers for crimes of child abuse and abandonment, greed, social and ecological negligence, and political and war crimes, and for persistent denial of responsibility for them all. For 75 years evil children have ritually rebuked audiences and, in playing on our guilt, established a horror subgenre that might be described as a blood-spattered rampage on an ethical mission.

A vintage playbill pinned to the door of a famous church, a bloody corpse staged in a copycat chapel, a priest bound by the seal of the confessional, some slick hacking by his method-acting office manager, and a few yellowed photographs send Mac in search of answers long-buried among the dead. Broadway legend Leo Albion outlived his fame — but not the one person who hated him enough to track him down and kill him. And as Mac closes in on a motive, if not a suspect, someone is tracking him. A macabre murder, an elusive killer, a missing motive and a twisted tale of wealth and perversion rival the darkest tragedies of Shakespeare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cave of Lascaux may be closed to the public, but five scholars a day are allowed inside, and Nora Barnes has finagled an appointment. True, she may have fudged a bit in her letter to the authorities, but she does teach art history, and she isn’t about to miss her chance to see the world’s most famous prehistoric paintings. Nora and her high-spirited husband, Toby, are visiting the Dordogne, in the southern French region of the Aquitaine. Aware that the Dordogne’s renown for cave art is matched only by its reputation for delicious cuisine, the couple has also signed up for a cooking class at a nearby château, but they soon find that more than food is on their minds. During their tour of the cave, another visitor is murdered. When the local inspector pegs Nora and Toby as suspects, they embark on a mission to solve the crime, tracing strange links between a Cro-Magnon symbol and a thirteenth-century religious cult. As they match wits with the crusty inspector, Nora finds herself immersed in the notebooks of a forgotten artist who once lived in the château. In sifting through the artist’s papers and uncovering old secrets, she begins to piece together the motives for the murder. But has she cooked up more trouble than she can handle?
