Book The First and Chief Groundes of Architecture Classic Reprint

Download or read book The First and Chief Groundes of Architecture Classic Reprint written by John Shute and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First and Chief Groundes of Architecture There are passages which serve to Show that Shute had made genuine observations of buildings in Italy. He brings to his subject some independent thought, as in his passage on the diminution of Orders upwards. He clearly felt that the expression of character in a building was as necessary as the Orders themselves, although he sets out to illustrate them as the first and chief grounds of architecture. He would like a building to be Doric, Ionic or Corinthian in character rather than to be an exhibition of all the Orders. When adding a special plinth, like the moulded riser of a step, under the complete pedestals of the Ionic and Corinthian he justifies himself as follows. Download or read book A Pattern Language written by Christopher Alexander and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction. After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment. "Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

Book The Practical Book of Architecture Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Practical Book of Architecture Classic Reprint written by Charles Matlack Price and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Book of Architecture The aim of Part I, A Practical Guide to Styles, is to give, as part of a liberal education, a thorough working knowledge of architecture and architectural styles, so far as is necessary for the use of the general reader, and to give it in so succinct and practical a way that it may easily be assimilated. Part II, A Practical Guide to Building, adds to the 'above knowledge information of a more practical kind for those who are about to have erected for them houses or other buildings, either in the city or the country, at either large or small expense, or who may be connected in any way with Advisory Boards for the erection of buildings of a more public character. The chapter on arrangements with architect and contractors treats of a subject never before presented to the lay reader in a direct manner, and a glance at the Table of Contents will show how helpful this portion of the work will prove. Book excerpt: De Architectura is considered as the first book on architectural theory and as a major source on the canon of classical architecture as as it is the only treatise on architecture to survive from antiquity. Book House Architecture Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book House Architecture Vol 1 of 2 written by J. J. Stevenson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from House Architecture, Vol. 1 of 2: Architecture I began this book ten years ago during an interval in the practice of my profession. Many causes have delayed its completion, foremost among which was a sense of the inadequacy and imperfection of what I had written. The constant engagements of an architect made it difficult for me to give to the book the time needed to make it satis factory. At the same time I was unwilling to lose the labour and the cost already expended. A consequence of the time the writing of the book has occupied is that many of, the views it advocates, which were unusual when they were written, are now current and fashionable. I believe that the book may still be useful. Though inadequate, it is not, I hope, misleading. Throughout it, while stating my own opinions, I have tried to give the reader data for judging for himself.
