Book excerpt: In 1956, a casual bet between two millionaires eventually pitted two of the greatest golfers of the era -- Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan -- against top amateurs Harvie Ward and Ken Venturi. The year: 1956. Decades have passed since Eddie Lowery came to fame as the ten-year-old caddie to U.S. Open Champion Francis Ouimet. Now a wealthy car dealer and avid supporter of amateur golf, Lowery has just made a bet with fellow millionaire George Coleman. Lowery claims that two of his employees, amateur golfers Harvie Ward and Ken Venturi, cannot be beaten in a best-ball match, and challenges Coleman to bring any two golfers of his choice to the course at 10 a.m. the next day to settle the issue. Coleman accepts the challenge and shows up with his own power team: Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, the game's greatest living professionals, with fourteen major championships between them. In Mark Frost's peerless hands, complete with the recollections of all the participants, the story of this immortal foursome and the game they played that day-legendarily known in golf circles as the greatest private match ever played-comes to life with powerful, emotional impact and edge-of-your-seat suspense.

Book The Dream Reader and Other Stories

Download or read book The Dream Reader and Other Stories written by Asheesh Mamgain and published by Blue Rose Publishers. This book was released on 2024-03-06 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the hustle of a bustling city, countless souls tread their mundane paths day in and day out. Yet, amidst the monotony, there comes a moment in someone’s life that transcends the ordinary. These stories gather such moments, at times infusing them with a touch of magical realism. Like when a man goes looking for a Dream Reader to decipher his recurring dream, or when a famous actor devises a plan to get some time away from the limelight. At times, it is an emotional journey – a businessman looking for salvation in the eyes of a beggar, an upper-middle-class woman trying to find strength in her housemaid and more. The stories resonate with city dwellers seeking meaning amidst the chaos, both in their surroundings and within themselves. Often, the reader finds themselves not merely a passive observer, but an active participant, entrusted with the task of imbuing these tales with their own interpretation. These narratives belong to every urban dweller, serving as mirrors reflecting the complexities of existence and inviting contemplation on the mysteries of life in a city.

Book Mary Toft or The Rabbit Queen

Download or read book Mary Toft or The Rabbit Queen written by Dexter Palmer and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1726, in the town of Godalming, England, a woman confounded the nation’s medical community by giving birth to seventeen rabbits. This astonishing true story is the basis for Dexter Palmer’s stunning, powerfully evocative new novel. Surgeon’s apprentice Zachary Walsh knows that his master, John Howard, prides himself on his rationality. But John cannot explain how or why Mary Toft, the wife of a local journeyman, has managed to give birth to a dead rabbit. When this singular event becomes a regular occurrence, John and Zachary realize that nothing in their experience as rural physicians has prepared them to deal with a situation like this—strange, troubling, and possibly miraculous. John contacts several of London’s finest surgeons, three of whom soon arrive in Godalming to observe, argue, and perhaps use the case to cultivate their own fame. When King George I learns of Mary’s plight, she and her doctors are summoned to London, where Zachary experiences a world far removed from his small-town existence and is exposed to some of the darkest corners of the human soul. All the while Mary lies in bed, as doubts begin to blossom among her caretakers and a growing group of onlookers waits with impatience for another birth, another miracle.

Download or read book The Man Upstairs and Other Stories written by P. G. Wodehouse and published by tredition. This book was released on 2022-05-02 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Man Upstairs and Other Stories - P. G. Wodehouse - The Man Upstairs is a collection of short stories by P. G. Wodehouse, first published in the U.K. on January 23, 1914. Including: The Man Upstairs, Something to Worry About, Deep Waters, When Doctors Disagree, By Advice of Council, Rough-Hew Them how we Will, The Man who Disliked Cats, Ruth in Exile, Archibalds Benefit, The Man, the Maid and the Miasma, The good Angle, Pots o Money, Out of School, Three from Dunsterville, The Tuppenny Millionaire, Ahead of Schedule, Sir Agrivaine, The Goal Keeper and the Plutocrat, and The Alcala. Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, was an English author and one of the most widely read humorists of the 20th century. Born in Guildford, the son of a British magistrate based in Hong Kong, Wodehouse spent happy teenage years at Dulwich College, to which he remained devoted all his life. After leaving school he was employed by a bank but disliked the work and turned to writing in his spare time. His early novels were mostly school stories, but he later switched to comic fiction, creating several regular characters who became familiar to the public over the years. They include the feather-brained Bertie Wooster and his sagacious valet, Jeeves; the immaculate and loquacious Psmith; the feeble-minded Lord Emsworth and the Blandings Castle set; the loquacious Oldest Member, with stories about golf; and the equally loquacious Mr Mulliner, with tall tales on subjects ranging from bibulous bishops to megalomaniac movie moguls. Although most of Wodehouse's fiction is set in England, he spent much of his life in the US and used New York and Hollywood as settings for some of his novels and short stories. During and after the First World War, together with Guy Bolton and Jerome Kern, he wrote a series of Broadway musical comedies that were an important part of the development of the American musical. He began the 1930s writing for MGM in Hollywood. In a 1931 interview, his naïve revelations of incompetence and extravagance at Hollywood studios caused a furore. In the same decade, his literary career reached a new peak.
