Book The First Afghan War

Book excerpt: This book is a brief account, written for a popular audience, of the First Anglo-Afghan War, published in 1878, the year that marked the start of the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80). The First Anglo-Afghan War began in late 1838 when the British launched an invasion of Afghanistan from India with the aim of overthrowing the Afghan ruler, Amir Dōst Moḥammad Khān, and replacing him with the supposedly pro-British former ruler, Shāh Shujāʻ. The British were at first successful. They installed Shāh Shujāʻ as ruler in Jalalabad and forced Dōst Moḥammad to flee the country. But in 1841 Dōst Moḥammad returned to Afghanistan to lead an uprising against the invaders and Shāh Shujāʻ. In one of the most disastrous defeats in British military history, in January 1842 an Anglo-Indian force of 4,500 men and thousands of followers was annihilated by Afghan tribesmen. The British then sent a larger force from India to exact retribution and to recover hostages, before finally withdrawing in October 1842. The concluding sentence of this book sums up the essential futility of the conflict: "And so the English army left secure on the throne of Afghanistan the dynasty they had spent so many millions of treasure and so many lives to overthrow." The book is by Mowbray Walter Morris (1847-1911), editor of Macmillan's Magazine and the author of works of biography and literary criticism.

The stormy Administration of Lord Amherst had come to an end; and Lord William Bentinck, secure from foreign aggression, and harbouring no dreams of conquest, had entered upon a policy of unsparing retrenchment. The army was being rapidly reduced, and everything seemed to presage a long peace. But then, as ever, the most promising field for a man of soldierly aspirations was the line of our N orth-westem Frontier for though our statesmen troubled themselves but little about the countries west of the Indus, the old Lion of Lahore lay within four marches of the Sutlej, with a large and eager army and other elements of danger were not wanting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War in Afghanistan, Vol. 1 of 3 The present Edition of the "History of the War in Afghanistan" is a reproduction of the three-volumed Edition of 1857, which was thoroughly revised, and much improved by the kindly aid of many of the chief actors in the scenes described. I do not think that I can make it any better. Only one alleged error has been brought to my notice since the last Edition was published. It is stated, in Chapter IV., page 55, that "Mr. Harford Jones, a civil servant of the Company, who was made a Baronet for the occasion, was deputed to Teheran to negotiate with the Ministers of the Shah." This was first published in 1851. After a lapse of twenty-three years, I have recently been informed by the son of Sir Harford Jones, that his father was not made a Baronet in consideration of prospective but of past services. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To Herat and Cabul: A Story of the First Afghan War In the military history of this country there is no darker page than the destruction Of a considerable British force in the terrible defiles between Cabul and J ellalabad in January, 1842. Of all the wars in which our troops have taken part never was one entered upon so recklessly or so unjustifiably. The ruler Of Afghanistan, Dost Mahomed, was sincerely anxious for our friendship. He was alarmed at the menacing attitude Of Russia, which, in conjunction with Persia, was threatening his dominions and intriguing with the princes at Candahar. Our commissioner at Cabul, Mr. Burnes, ' was convinced Of the Ameer's honesty Of intention, and protested most strongly against the course taken by the Indian government, who determined upon setting up a dis credited prince, who had for many years been a fugitive in India, in place Of Dost Mahomed. Even during the excitement of the march to Caubul he had complained of the narrow kingdom to which he was about to return and now, as he looked out from the windows of his palace over the fair expanse of country beneath him, he sighed to think that the empire of Ahmed Shah had been so grievously curtailed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Causes of the Afghan War They consist of more than 500 folio pages well filled with print; and the amount of time for studying them before the debates in Parliament was therefore extremely scanty. The result is that the mass of matter has hitherto been very insufficiently elucidated; and indeed the debates in Parliament turned to an undue extent on the party issues raised by Lord Cranbrook's de spatch. A great deal yet remains to be said before the people at large can understand what has been done and is being done. This must be the work of many pamphlets, articles, and speeches. And the Committee conceive that an arrangement of the material parts of the papers in order, coupled with such statements as will suffice to connect and elucidate them, with com ments on the salient points, and with proper references to the originals as published, will be the best way of lightening the labours of those who wish either to ex pound the subject to others or to understand it them selves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For Name and Fame or Through Afghan Passes In following the hero of this story with the British army during the last war in Afghanistan, you will be improving your acquaintance with a country which is at present, and is likely to be so for a long time, of supreme interest to Englishmen. Afghan istan stands as a dividing line between the two great empires of England and Russia, and is certain, sooner or later, to become the scene of a tremendous struggle between these nations; possibly the struggle may have begun before these pages are read by you. Hap pily, at the present time the Afghans are on our side. It is true that we have lately warred with and beaten them, but our retirement after victory has at least shown them that we have no desire to take their country; while, on the other hand, they know that for those upon whom Russia has once laid her hand there is no escape. In these pages you Will see the strength and the weakness of these wild people of the mountains; their strength lying in their personal bravery, their determination to preserve their freedom. Book excerpt: A concise outline of Britain's first conflict in Afghanistan Whereas the history of British invasion, occupation, adventure and misadventure in Afghanistan in the nineteenth century is well known to military historians, there can be little doubt that the deployment of British soldiers into that daunting and perilous country in recent times has once again brought its affairs into sharp focus. Most will understand the perennial problems of operating in difficult terrain occupied by a fierce independent people where occupation is often confined to the ground upon which the army stands. In this little or nothing has changed for any foreign army that ventures beyond the Khyber Pass. Consideration of the domination of Afghanistan became inevitable as the British Empire inexorably expanded to the entire Indian sub-continent. The first occasion the British seriously engaged the Afghans by marching into their country was in 1839. Very few survivors of the force that occupied Kabul marched back into India again and the 'peace' in 1842 was inconclusive, as history has shown. Since that time this problematic region has been an a feature of the lives of British soldiers through several wars and troubles. This book, a short sketch of the First Afghan War delivered in the most direct terms for those who seek an understanding of how it all began, underlines the uncomfortable parallels between that inhospitable region in the early nineteenth century and almost two centuries later. Available in softcover and back with dust jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrilling true story of courage and duty after 9/11—“an extraordinary read from cover to cover . . . Gritty, frustrating, brutal, exhilarating” (Midwest Book Review). Within hours after the World Trade Center attacks in 2001, ex-Green Beret Duane Evans began a personal quest to become part of the US response against al-Qa’ida. His determination led him to join one of the CIAs elite teams bound for Afghanistan. It was a journey that eventually took him to the front lines in Pakistan—first as part of the advanced element of a CIA group supporting President Hamid Karzai, and finally as leader of the under-resourced and often overlooked Foxtrot team. Evans’s mission was to venture into southern Afghanistan, where the Taliban and al-Qa’ida held sway, and try to organize a cohesive resistance among the fractious warlords and tribal leaders. He traveled in the company of Pashtun warriors—one of only a handful of Americans pushing forward across the desert into some of the most dangerous, yet mesmerizingly beautiful, landscape on earth. Brilliantly crafted and fast-paced, Foxtrot in Kandahar “dramatically reports the huge challenges and exceptional success of [Evans’s] and his brothers’ work in Afghanistan defeating the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in nine weeks” (Ambassador Cofer Black, former director, Counterterrorist Center, CIA).

Download or read book Lord Lytton and the Afghan War Classic Reprint written by W. J. Eastwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lord Lytton and the Afghan War And who is the N 0110 of Spiti? The very mention of such a potentate seems to throw a shade of ridicule over a very grave question. It was a source of amusement to frontier officers a few years ago, when the Supreme Government penned a despatch, intimating to the lieutenant-governor of the Punjab that the penal code was to be introduced into the territories of the N ono of Spiti. The lieutenant-governor had a sketch made of this redoubtable potentate in his primitive costume, of a single cloth round his loins (commonly termed a langoti), with his plough on his shoulders, and his two little daughters carrying the seed, on their way to their agricultural labours. This sketch he sent into Government, and nothing more was heard of the introduction of the penal code. To place this head man of a wild valley in the Himalaya mountains, with an income of probably not more than three pounds a month, in the same category as the Amir of Cabul, requires great confidence in the ignorance of those to whom the argument was addressed.
