Unlike Doyle's extra well-known detective stories, this work delves into the nation-states of commercial enterprise ethics, ethical dilemmas, and the effects of unchecked ambition. The narrative centers across the Girdlestone circle of relatives, who run a hit transport firm. The patriarch, Jonas Girdlestone, is an intelligent and ruthless businessman, inclined to go to brilliant lengths to shield his fortune. His son, Ezra, is ready to inherit the business but is torn between his father's callous practices and his very own ethical compass. As the story unfolds, the Girdlestone firm will become entangled in an internet of deceit, fraud, and treacherous dealings. The novel explores issues of greed, justice, and the complexities of familial relationships. Doyle's skillful storytelling and eager observation of human nature are obtrusive on this early work, showcasing his versatility beyond the detective style. "The Firm of Girdlestone" stays an idea-frightening exploration of enterprise morality, resonating with readers who recognize Victorian literature's nuanced technique to social issues.

After keeping the impending bankruptcy a secret from everyone for a time, he tells his son (whom he has fooled with a dummy ledger) about it, who is disgusted by his father's rashness. They resort to chicanery to save the firm. They plan to send an agent to the Ural mountains who will claim to have found diamond mines. They speculate that the resulting plunge in the prices of diamonds in England and South Africa will force the dealers to get rid of their diamonds quickly at absurdly cheap rates to avoid total financial ruin, which would eventually fall on them if diamonds from the Urals start pouring in the market. They will then step in and buy as many diamonds as their remaining money would allow them. Once their capital is exhausted, their agent will disappear and the discovery that the Ural diamond mines were a hoax would skyrocket the prices of diamonds once again, leaving them rich men.ARTHUR CONAN DOYLESir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (22 May 1859 - 7 July 1930) was a British writer best known for his detective fiction featuring the character Sherlock Holmes. Originally a physician, in 1887 he published A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels about Holmes and Dr. Watson. In addition, Doyle wrote over fifty short stories featuring the famous detective. The Sherlock Holmes stories are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction. Doyle is also known for writing the fictional adventures of Professor Challenger and for propagating the mystery of the Mary Celeste. He was a prolific writer whose other works include fantasy and science fiction stories, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels.Doyle is often referred to as "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle" or simply "Conan Doyle" (implying that Conan is part of a compound surname, as opposed to his given middle name). His baptism entry in the register of St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh, gives "Arthur Ignatius Conan" as his given names and "Doyle" as his surname. It also names Michael Conan as his godfather. The cataloguers of the British Library and the Library of Congress treat "Doyle" alone as his surname. Steven Doyle, editor of the Baker Street Journal, wrote, "Conan was Arthur's middle name. Shortly after he graduated from high school he began using Conan as a sort of surname. But technically his last name is simply 'Doyle'." When knighted, he was gazetted as Doyle, not under the compound Conan Doyle. Nevertheless, the actual use of a compound surname is demonstrated by the fact that Doyle's second wife was known as Jean Conan Doyle rather than Jean Doyle.
