Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firefighter Emotional Wellness: Reconnecting with Yourself and Others is a training exercise for your heart and mind. It’s an excellent, evidence-based self-help book with boots on the ground sharing interviews with firefighters and how they adapt. “You are looking at a critical part of your success as a first responder and human being, and it doesn’t mean that you will have perfect understanding right away – or ever, but what it means is you will begin to find tools that help you grapple with what you have seen.” – Jada Hudson What others are saying “By sharing personal stories of her clients’ emotional wellness struggles, Jada Hudson takes away the stigma of talking about things like depression, anxiety, addiction, suicidal ideation,” said Dr. Thomas E. Joiner, an academic psychologist, author and professor of psychology, Florida State University. “Firefighter Emotional Wellness: Reconnecting with Yourself and Others is a must-read for every academy recruit, newlywed, leader, retiree, spouse, and individual who wants to become or remain emotionally well.” “Jada Hudson’s years of critically important work with counseling first responders has come full circle in this book. Her insight, guidance and examination of the issues facing the men and women on the front lines is both remarkable and humbling. This book should be a must read for any first responder or medical professional.” - Dr. Robert Langman, Northwestern Medicine, Chicago “I highly recommend this book for first responders, peer support programs, chaplains and clinicians,” said Dr. Joel Fay, who teaches intervention, case law, PTSD, Suicide by Cop and Self Care for Sacramento PD CIT. “Jada Hudson brings a considerable wealth of information regarding the mental health and treatment of first responders. She covers a broad range of topics including PTSD, suicide, stress and trauma, resiliency, and treatment. She shares her professional knowledge and writes from her personal experience and the book is richer for it.” “Jada Hudson draws upon her personal and professional experience as well as research and theory in writing Firefighter Emotional Wellness, a book that is timely and important,” says Dr. Stanley McCracken, author, and lecturer (ret.), The University of Chicago. “Just as first responders drill to prepare them for the physical demands of their jobs, reading this book should be considered a preparation for the emotional demands they will face.”

Download or read book Chained to the Desk Second Edition written by Bryan E. Robinson and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen on 20/20, The Early Show, and ABC World News Tonight Americans love a hard worker. The man or woman who works eighteen-hour days and eats his or her meals on the run between appointments is usually viewed with a combination of respect and awe. But for many, this lifestyle leads to family problems, a decline in work productivity, and ultimately to physical and mental collapse. Chained to the Desk, best-selling author and widely respected family therapist Bryan E. Robinson’s groundbreaking book, originally published in 1998, was the first comprehensive portrait of the workaholic. Thousands benefited from this innovative book, which profiles the myths behind this greatly misunderstood disorder and the inner psychological battle that work addicts wage against themselves. Intended for anyone touched by what Robinson calls “the best-dressed problem of the twenty-first century,” the author also provides an inside look into the impact on those who live and work with them —partners, spouses, children, and colleagues—as well as the appropriate techniques for clinicians who treat them. In this new and updated edition, Robinson portrays the many different kinds of workaholism, drawing on hundreds of case reports from his own original research and years of clinical practice. From California to the Carolinas, men and women tell of their agonizing bouts with workaholism and the devastations left in its wake, struggles made all the more challenging in a world where the computer, cell phone, and Blackberry allow twenty-four-hour access to the office, even on weekends and from vacation spots. Adult children of workaholics describe their childhood pain and the lifelong legacies they still carry, and the spouses or partners of workaholics reveal the isolation and loneliness of their vacant relationships. Employers and business colleagues discuss the cost to the company when workaholism dominates the workplace. Chained to the Desk both counsels and consoles. It provides a step-by-step guide to help readers spot workaholism, understand it, and recover. Robinson presents strategies for workaholics and their loved ones on how to cope, and for people in the workplace on how to distinguish between work efficiency and workaholism.

Download or read book OD written by Nancy D. Campbell and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of an unnatural disaster—drug overdose—and the emergence of naloxone as a social and technological solution. For years, drug overdose was unmentionable in polite society. OD was understood to be something that took place in dark alleys—an ugly death awaiting social deviants—neither scientifically nor clinically interesting. But over the last several years, overdose prevention has become the unlikely object of a social movement, powered by the miracle drug naloxone. In OD, Nancy Campbell charts the emergence of naloxone as a technological fix for overdose and describes the remaking of overdose into an experience recognized as common, predictable, patterned—and, above all, preventable. Naloxone, which made resuscitation, rescue, and “reversal” after an overdose possible, became a tool for shifting law, policy, clinical medicine, and science toward harm reduction. Liberated from emergency room protocols and distributed in take-home kits to non-medical professionals, it also became a tool of empowerment. After recounting the prehistory of naloxone—the early treatment of OD as a problem of poisoning, the development of nalorphine (naloxone's predecessor), the idea of “reanimatology”—Campbell describes how naloxone emerged as a tool of harm reduction. She reports on naloxone use in far-flung locations that include post-Thatcherite Britain, rural New Mexico, and cities and towns in Massachusetts. Drawing on interviews with approximately sixty advocates, drug users, former users, friends, families, witnesses, clinicians, and scientists—whom she calls the “protagonists” of her story—Campbell tells a story of saving lives amid the complex, difficult conditions of an unfolding unnatural disaster.
