Book excerpt: “A fascinating look at the misery of unexplained events and other people’s reactions to the events visited on a seemingly happy family.” —The New Glasgow News Just below the Antigonish-Guysborough County line, there is an overgrown spot, nearly impossible to find without a guide, where the cursed MacDonald farm once stood. Though no physical trace remains, the legend of the mysterious events that once took place lives on. In the newest addition to the Stories of Our Past series, Monica Graham exposes the fascinating history behind the fire-spook of Caledonia Mills, Nova Scotia, a true story that spread as quickly and uncontrollably as the flames that started it all. But were these spontaneous fires and sinister sightings the work of a poltergeist, or of a troubled young woman? “A very good book to purchase if you want to read about the case, case notes, and view photos of the family and all of the investigators that took part in trying to unravel the mystery that the family was going through.” —Paranormal Investigations Nova Scotia “Graham deftly tries her hand at explaining the unexplainable . . . compelling, eyewitness accounts of the fires that plagued the family are recounted by Graham . . . Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For generations eastern Nova Scotia was one of the most celebrated Roman Catholic constituencies in Canada. Occupying a corner of a small province in a politically marginalized region of the country, the Diocese of Antigonish nevertheless had tremendous influence over the development of Canadian Catholicism. It produced the first Roman Catholic prime minister of Canada, supplied the nation with clergy and women- religious, and organized one of North America’s most successful social movements. Disciples of Antigonish recounts the history of this unique multi-ethnic community as it shifted from the firm ultramontanism of the nineteenth century to a more socially conscious Catholicism after the First World War. Peter Ludlow chronicles the faithful as they built a strong Catholic sub-state, dealing with economic uncertainty, generational outmigration, and labour unrest. As the home of the Antigonish Movement – a network of adult study clubs, cooperatives, and credit unions – the diocese became famous throughout the Catholic world. The influence of “mighty big and strong Antigonish,” as one national figure described the community, reached its zenith in the 1950s. Disciples of Antigonish traces the monumental changes that occurred within the region and the wider church over nearly a century and demonstrates that the Catholic faith in Canada went well beyond Sunday Mass.

Book Truth Fiction Lies

Download or read book Truth Fiction Lies written by Patrick X Walsh and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-09-11 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How could he be a good boy and a bad boy at the same time? The TRUTH is what is. FICTION is not reality—but it can help us to see the TRUTH through stories, e.g., The Boy Who Cried Wolf. LIES deceive, for evil purposes, and for good purposes. But what happens when what we think is the TRUTH turns out to be a LIE? In his ninth decade, the author, who has spent his life creating FICTION to examine TRUTH, decided to write the story of his life, truthfully. But, in the process of examining his life—his prayers, works, joys and sufferings—he discovers it becomes more and more difficult to distinguish the TRUTH from the LIES. And the chief insights into the reality of a life he thought noble, his FICTION—often in the form of dreams—reveals his true nature as a failure in his professed faith—until a good woman shows him the way out of his dark forest.
