Download or read book The Garden and the Fire written by Nerina Rustomji and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islamic conceptions of heaven and hell began in the seventh century as an early doctrinal innovation, but by the twelfth century, these notions had evolved into a highly formalized ideal of perfection. In tracking this transformation, Nerina Rustomji reveals the distinct material culture and aesthetic vocabulary Muslims developed to understand heaven and hell and identifies the communities and strategies of defense that took shape around the promise of a future world. Ideas of the afterworld profoundly influenced daily behaviors in Islamic society and gave rise to a code of ethics that encouraged abstinence from sumptuous objects, such as silver vessels and silk, so they could be appreciated later in heaven. Rustomji conducts a meticulous study of texts and images and carefully connects the landscape and social dynamics of the afterworld with earthly models and expectations. Male servants and female companions become otherworldly objects in the afterlife, and stories of rewards and punishment helped preachers promote religious reform. By employing material culture as a method of historical inquiry, Rustomji points to the reflections, discussions, and constructions that actively influenced Muslims' picture of the afterworld, culminating in a distinct religious aesthetic.

Download or read book Eclipse A Journey to Darkness and Light written by David Levy and published by ibooks. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to world-famous astronomer David Levy, an eclipse of the sun “is a natural event with unnatural consequences. In fact, a total eclipse of the Sun has the power to rip through to the core of your being.” Levy should know, having experienced the power of the vanishing Sun first as a child then in 1999 on a ship in the North Atlantic. It was that voyage to the darkness of the disappearing Sun, followed by a rendezvous with a brilliant display of the Northern Lights, that formed the inspiration for this book. Levy recounts the recorded history of eclipses, how they have been perceived by ancient cultures, how they can be predicted, and how best to view them. In addition, he explains the science of solar eclipses and what can be gained by studying them. In a manner accessible to all readers, Levy recounts the story of nature’s most profound displays.

Download or read book The Cults of Uruk and Babylon written by Marc J.H. Linssen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with temple ritual texts from ancient Mesopotamia, in particular from the cities Uruk and Babylon. Key question is whether they are a reliable source of information on the cult practices in Uruk and Babylon during the Hellenistic period. In the book an extensive description is presented of the festivals, rituals, ceremonies and offerings in Hellenistic Mesopotamia. The appendix consists of a selection of the most important temple ritual texts, which are presented in transliteration, translation and with philological comments. Four plates with so far unpublished text fragments are also included. The evidence clearly shows how important the public cults were in Hellenistic times, at least until the first century B.C., and how active the Mesopotamians were in matters of religion and cult during this period.
