The breed;s double coat allows them to be virtually waterproof and have a high resistence to extreme cold. In Tibet, the Lhasa Apso is known as the 'Apso Seng Kyl, ' which translates to the 'Bearded Lion Dog.' The breed was developed for the purposes of being a household, or a monetary, sentinel that was tasked with letting people know if any intruders enter the property. The Lhasa Apso has an incredible sense of hearing and a loud sharp bark, which makes it a perfect burglar alarm. Traditionally in Tibet, the Lhasa Apso was never sold and the only way to obtain one was for it to be received as a gift. The Lhasa Apso breed was introduced to the United States of America in 1933, when Thubten Gyatso, 13th Dalai Lama gifted a pair of Lhasa Apso to C. Suydam Cutting. Due to the fact that the Lhasa Apso was developed in incredibly harsh conditions found within the Himalaya region, the breed is surprisingly hardy and long living. The Lhasa Apso is known for its unique looking coat. The breed's coat has a heavy and hard texture and the hairs lie straight. It is considered a fault if a Lhasa Apso coat is wooly or silky to the touch. The breed's coat comes in a wide variety of colorations that includes black, white, red and various shades of gold. Despite the breed having a dense long haired coat it is actually considered to be a hypo-allergenic breed. The Ibizan Hound originated on the island of Elvissa and has been traditionally put to use in the Catalan-speaking areas of Spain and France. The Ibizan Hound is a lean and agile breed that is capable of hunting on all types of terrain and was mainly employed to hunt rabbits and other small game. The breed has an incredibly good sense of sight and smell which allows it to easy track small game. Hunters traditionally use packs of Ibizan Hound females as the female Ibizan Hound is considered to be a much better hunter. The Ibizan Hound will normally be completely silent during a hunt as it also uses its sense of hearing to locate prey, however once the prey is located and trapped the Ibizan Hound will normally bark as a signal to the hunter. While the need for hunting rabbits has died down, the Ibizan Hound is still a popular breed within Spain and France. The Ibizan Hound is now mainly used in dog shows, especially for agility trials, as it has a great degree of discipline, a high level of obedience, great agility and has a very powerful vertical jump. The Ibizan Hound has an elegant and agile frame but also has good bone girth which makes it a hardy and all around rugged breed. The breed's distinguishing feature is its large upright ears.
