Download or read book U S Postal Service written by U S Government Accountability Office (G and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) continues to experience deficits, severe cash-flow problems, rising debt, and liabilities that exceed its assets. USPS also lacks enough income to fund needed investments in safety, maintenance, expansion, and modernization and to cover its liabilities. USPS reported a $1.68 billion deficit in fiscal year 2001, up from $199 million a year earlier. The pressure to increase rates will mount as USPS contends with growing long-term obligations, including employee retirement and health benefits. Although USPS assumes that rising mail volume will cover rising costs and mitigate rate increases, this business model is increasingly problematic because of the potential for declining or stagnating mail volume. USPS has had little success in sustaining productivity increases. USPS' financial viability is also hindered by structural, legal, and practical constraints that make it difficult to close or consolidate postal facilities or realign the postal workforce. USPS must undertake a comprehensive transformation to address its financial, operational, and human capital challenges. USPS also needs to produce more timely and accessible financial information.

Book U S Postal Service USPS

Download or read book U S Postal Service USPS written by Phillip Herr and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The USPS recently reported that its financial results for the first half of this fiscal year -- a net loss of $2.6 billion -- are worse than projected. USPS expects continued financial challenges as mail volume continues to decline. Most notable is the decline of First-Class Mail (its most profitable mail) by over 25 billion pieces, or about 25%, over the past decade. There have been reports on proposals to revise USPS pension and retiree health obligations, but such actions alone will not be sufficient to address the accelerating volume decline and changing use of the mail. This statement discusses: (1) why it is important to restructure USPS's networks; and (2) what actions are needed to facilitate additional progress. Illustrations. This is a print on demand report.

Book U S Postal Service Restructuring Urgently Needed to Achieve Financial Viability

Download or read book U S Postal Service Restructuring Urgently Needed to Achieve Financial Viability written by Phillip Herr and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Postal Service¿s (USPS) financial condition has worsened since Jan. 2009, with the recession and changing mail use causing dramatic declines in mail volume and revenues despite postal rate increases. USPS expects these declines to lead to losses and cash shortfalls even if ambitious cost-cutting is achieved. USPS¿s business model has relied on growth in mail volume to cover costs, but USPS has not been able to cut costs fast enough to offset the accelerated decline in mail volume and revenue.
