Book Minor League Baseball and Local Economic Development

Download or read book Minor League Baseball and Local Economic Development written by Arthur T. Johnson and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport, including minor league baseball, is an object of public policy. Communities can exploit it to promote economic and social well-being, but not without risk. Drawing on case studies of fifteen locales including Fresno, Birmingham, Durham, Buffalo, Indianapolis, and Colorado Springs, Arthur Johnson systematically analyzes the political process by which communities decide to invest in stadiums for minor league baseball teams. He explores such factors as the presence or absence of a development strategy as a guide in decision making, and the value to a community of a minor league team and its stadium. Johnson also describes the dynamics of minor league baseball franchise relocation, the importance of intergovernmental relations to stadium financing, and the organization and business of minor league baseball, including its formal relationship with major league baseball.

Book Relocating Teams and Expanding Leagues in Professional Sports

Download or read book Relocating Teams and Expanding Leagues in Professional Sports written by Frank P. Jozsa and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-08-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the business of professional league sports, market conditions are the key determinate of the financial success or failure of a team. In the last few years, major league sports has experienced both growth into new markets and relocations of existing teams. Owners and the leagues use demographics, economic data, and governmental support to decide on where and when to expand and relocate. This book examines the sports business from 1950 through 2000. Historical demographic, economic, and team-related data provide the context. The authors apply metropolitan area statistics such as population growth and income, game attendance, and estimated market values to examine the business decisions made by individual teams in professional baseball, football, and basketball. The book looks at specific teams in terms of their long-term viability as a franchise and ranks their performances in economic and business terms. It also examines the related issues of taxpayer subsidies for new venues and the economic impact of professional sports on cities and regions. The book is a fascinating and comprehensive look at the business of sports and its place in American society, business, and economics.

Book The Impact of Professional Sports Franchises on Local Economies

Download or read book The Impact of Professional Sports Franchises on Local Economies written by Jeffrey Pierro and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt that professional sports franchises and stadiums generate a significant amount of economic activity, but is the impact on the local economy positive, negative, or neutral? Studies have shown that, while franchises can give the economy a boost in the short term, there are little to no long-term positive effects. This capstone will examine the trend in public financing of stadiums, look at the impact of stadium location, explore the factors of the economy that are impacted by professional sports franchises, and determine if the effects vary by sport or by region. Several major case studies will be examined to provide specific examples, including the most recent Super Bowl in New Jersey. Once the literature review is complete, regression analysis will be used to make an ultimate conclusion on the value of professional sports franchises and stadiums in the United States and the optimal location in which to start a new professional sports franchise in the United States. This will be done using data from 2001-2012 and variables that have been proven to have an impact one way or another. The result will be a prediction of the type and location of the next professional sports franchise in the United States.

Download or read book The Economic Impact of Stadia and Teams written by Nola Agha and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article uses an extensive unique data set to investigate the efficiency of government subsidies for minor league baseball teams and stadiums by measuring pecuniary gains in a local economy. Specifically, a dynamic panel data model incorporating 238 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) that hosted affiliated or independent minor league teams between 1985 and 2006 shows that AAA teams, AB teams, AA stadiums, and rookie stadiums are all associated with significant positive effects on the change in local per capita income. The presence of positive effects is strikingly different from decades of non-positive results at the major league level.

Book Employment Effects of Major League Sports Franchise Relocation

Download or read book Employment Effects of Major League Sports Franchise Relocation written by William A. Tharp and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation assesses the employment effects associated with thirty-five instances of major league sports franchise relocation that have occurred over the past thirty years. It begins with an overview of location theory and a general history of local economic development, and relates the phenomenon of franchise relocation and stadium development to these concepts. A detailed review of the literature with regard to the factors driving public investment in major league sports follows, in addition to an overview of arguments related to the tax, employment and development effects of such an investment. A conceptual framework is then presented that advances the argument that the economic effects of major league sports franchise relocation are potentially marginal because of their short-term, seasonal and low-wage characteristics.

Book The Impact of Retro Stadiums on Major League Baseball Franchises

Download or read book The Impact of Retro Stadiums on Major League Baseball Franchises written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 'retro' stadiums on professional baseball franchises. Retro stadiums, baseball-exclusive facilities modeled on classic architectural designs of the past, were built at an increasing rate beginning in 1992 with Baltimore's Camden Yards. This study analyzed changes in franchises' attendance, winning percentage, revenue and team value in the seasons following a team's relocation to a retro stadium. Retro stadiums were found to positively increase attendance, revenue and team value for franchises at a higher rate than teams that did not build retro stadiums. An analysis of these variables and a discussion of the results for all individual franchises that constructed retro stadiums during the 1992-2004 period are presented in this study.

Book The Impact of the Growth Machine on Public Financing of Professional Sports Facilities

Download or read book The Impact of the Growth Machine on Public Financing of Professional Sports Facilities written by Eric M. Click and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on public financing of facilities for professional sports teams, particularly Major League Baseball (MLB) from a local economic development (LED) perspective. The researcher completed a case study of the St. Louis Cardinals' new Busch Stadium using growth machine theory as developed by Logan and Molotch (1987). Further, this researcher attempts to explain how and why cities continue to invest public funds in professional sports facilities despite economic evidence that indicates that they do not produce a satisfactory monetary return on investment. Cities have great demand on funds, especially those concerning public services and infrastructure. With the current economic crisis, this demand is likely to grow. Moreover, this research attempts to bridge the gap in literature concerning professional sports facilities, LED, and growth machine theory.
