Book Practical Handbook of Curve Design and Generation

Download or read book Practical Handbook of Curve Design and Generation written by David H. von Seggern and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-03-08 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers are now being used virtually everywhere in arts, drafting, and design to generate curves and surfaces ranging from the elementary to the intricate. Practical Handbook of Curve Design and Generation is a ready reference that presents the basic mathematics of curves in a complete, clear manner that enables you to apply the material to your own work with minimum effort. By knowing how curves are mathematically generated and how their shape is controlled, you can more fully exploit available computer tools, modify these tools themselves, and provide input for others to modify them. It will also help you to identify mathematical equations required to produce specific curves. The book does not require a heavy mathematical background-if you understand elementary algebra and trigonometry, you can fully apply the material presented. Essential mathematical concepts are repeated in the book to reinforce your knowledge of those topics. Featuring some 300 graphic examples, the book is organized so that early chapters cover fundamental polynomial, trigonometric, and exponential forms. The mathematical transformation of curves is then treated in order to give you a general approach for modifying known curves. Later chapters introduce complex curves that can be composed from the building blocks presented in earlier chapters. The final chapters cover interesting ideas in space curves and in surfaces.

Book Selected Poems of Langston Hughes

Download or read book Selected Poems of Langston Hughes written by Langston Hughes and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1990-09-12 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Langston Hughes electrified readers and launched a renaissance in Black writing in America—the poems in this collection were chosen by Hughes himself shortly before his death and represent stunning work from his entire career. The poems Hughes wrote celebrated the experience of invisible men and women: of slaves who "rushed the boots of Washington"; of musicians on Lenox Avenue; of the poor and the lovesick; of losers in "the raffle of night." They conveyed that experience in a voice that blended the spoken with the sung, that turned poetic lines into the phrases of jazz and blues, and that ripped through the curtain separating high from popular culture. They spanned the range from the lyric to the polemic, ringing out "wonder and pain and terror—and the marrow of the bone of life." The collection includes "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," "The Weary Blues," "Still Here," "Song for a Dark Girl," "Montage of a Dream Deferred," and "Refugee in America." It gives us a poet of extraordinary range, directness, and stylistic virtuosity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost ten years chaos and fractals have been enveloping many areas of mathematics and the natural sciences in their power, creativity and expanse. Reaching far beyond the traditional bounds of mathematics and science to the realms of popular culture, they have captured the attention and enthusiasm of a worldwide audience. The fourteen chapters of the book cover the central ideas and concepts, as well as many related topics including, the Mandelbrot Set, Julia Sets, Cellular Automata, L-Systems, Percolation and Strange Attractors, and each closes with the computer code for a central experiment. In the two appendices, Yuval Fisher discusses the details and ideas of fractal image compression, while Carl J.G. Evertsz and Benoit Mandelbrot introduce the foundations and implications of multifractals.

Book Strange Curves Counting Rabbits Other Mathematical Explorations

Download or read book Strange Curves Counting Rabbits Other Mathematical Explorations written by Keith Ball and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does mathematics enable us to send pictures from space back to Earth? Where does the bell-shaped curve come from? Why do you need only 23 people in a room for a 50/50 chance of two of them sharing the same birthday? In Strange Curves, Counting Rabbits, and Other Mathematical Explorations, Keith Ball highlights how ideas, mostly from pure math, can answer these questions and many more. Drawing on areas of mathematics from probability theory, number theory, and geometry, he explores a wide range of concepts, some more light-hearted, others central to the development of the field and used daily by mathematicians, physicists, and engineers. Each of the book's ten chapters begins by outlining key concepts and goes on to discuss, with the minimum of technical detail, the principles that underlie them. Each includes puzzles and problems of varying difficulty. While the chapters are self-contained, they also reveal the links between seemingly unrelated topics. For example, the problem of how to design codes for satellite communication gives rise to the same idea of uncertainty as the problem of screening blood samples for disease. Accessible to anyone familiar with basic calculus, this book is a treasure trove of ideas that will entertain, amuse, and bemuse students, teachers, and math lovers of all ages.

Book Variational and Level Set Methods in Image Segmentation

Download or read book Variational and Level Set Methods in Image Segmentation written by Amar Mitiche and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image segmentation consists of dividing an image domain into disjoint regions according to a characterization of the image within or in-between the regions. Therefore, segmenting an image is to divide its domain into relevant components. The efficient solution of the key problems in image segmentation promises to enable a rich array of useful applications. The current major application areas include robotics, medical image analysis, remote sensing, scene understanding, and image database retrieval. The subject of this book is image segmentation by variational methods with a focus on formulations which use closed regular plane curves to define the segmentation regions and on a level set implementation of the corresponding active curve evolution algorithms. Each method is developed from an objective functional which embeds constraints on both the image domain partition of the segmentation and the image data within or in-between the partition regions. The necessary conditions to optimize the objective functional are then derived and solved numerically. The book covers, within the active curve and level set formalism, the basic two-region segmentation methods, multiregion extensions, region merging, image modeling, and motion based segmentation. To treat various important classes of images, modeling investigates several parametric distributions such as the Gaussian, Gamma, Weibull, and Wishart. It also investigates non-parametric models. In motion segmentation, both optical flow and the movement of real three-dimensional objects are studied.

Book New Contributions to R curves and Bridging Stresses Applications of Weight Functions

Download or read book New Contributions to R curves and Bridging Stresses Applications of Weight Functions written by Theo Fett and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most ceramics show an increase of the crack growth resistance during crack propagation (R-curve behaviour). Reasons for such behaviour are bridging effects between opposite crack surfaces, phase transformations around the tip of a crack, and development of micro-cracking zones. This booklet predominantly deals with the bridging behaviour and the discussion of the observed effects in terms of the fracture mechanics weight function procedure.
