Book excerpt: Lana Turner was the ultimate personification of the term “movie star.” The actress and world-class beauty lived the glamorous life to the hilt, and was part of one of the most notorious scandals in Hollywood history. Lana’s daughter, Cheryl Crane, now tells her mother’s story for the first time, featuring hundreds of never-before-seen photos from her private family collection. Lana: The Memories, the Myths, the Movies will chronicle her life and 50-year career, starting with the Cinderella story of a girl discovered at a soda shop at age fifteen and made a star overnight. From blonde bombshell to box-office queen of the ’40s, Lana led a whirlwind life marked by seven marriages and a murder trial that made her and her daughter infamous. While Lana’s private adventures inspired the press, her talent and provocative presence shone on the silver screen. Her films The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Bad and the Beautiful, and Imitation of Life are extensively covered as part of a complete filmography. And from chapters on her lovers to her makeup tips, Lana will show the complete spectrum of the woman, at work and at play. The gorgeous photographs throughout showcase not only the stunning glamour of one of Hollywood’s classic celebrities, but also reveal her other facets: as a mother, a wife, an adventurer, and above all, a woman with a zest for life.

Book The Sex Goddess in American Film 1930 1965

Download or read book The Sex Goddess in American Film 1930 1965 written by Jessica Hope Jordan and published by Cambria Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the first critical study of the sex goddess in film, Jessica Hope Jordan illustrates how Jean Harlow uses her sexualized body to "affect" and seduce viewers away from any primary identification with those characters and their plotlines that are supposed to lead the film, to identifying instead with the kind of sexual empowerment and self-possession her characters consistently display. Linking the idea of sexual empowerment to the filmic and public celebration of hyper-feminine sexuality, the book additionally covers previous feminist discussions of Mae West's performances as "feminist camp" to argue that West sought to both celebrate and embody for women viewers what she viewed as cultural ideals of femininity and women's sexuality. With Lana Turner and the "cinematic code," the book considers the many problems inherent in both the filmic and public celebration of hyper-feminine sexuality in relation to censorship and considers the effects of the Hays Code on hyper-feminine sexuality as depicted in film noir." "The book also importantly presents the first critical discussion of the actress Jayne Mansfield, suggesting that her 1950s open acceptance, celebration, and public promotion of her feminine sexuality, both onscreen and off, makes her not only a precursor of the more sexually liberated 60s, but also, like the other actresses discussed here, a kind of prescient performance artist, even theorist, of feminine sexuality in particular, and cultural ideas about sexuality more generally. Beyond recouping her image as feminist, the book demonstrates how the kind of desire aroused by the sex goddess, a desire which remains endlessly suspended, works as a supreme example of the aesthetic apparatus of cinema itself." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: Lana Turner, born Julia Jean Turner on February 8th, 1921, at Providence Hospital, in Wallace, Idaho, U.S., was an actress who worked in the movies, TV, theatre and radio. Over the course of her nearly 50-year career, Turner became famous as both a pin-up model and a dramatic actress, as well as for her highly publicized personal life. During the mid-'40s, she was one of the highest-paid women in the US, and one of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's (MGM) biggest stars, with her films making the studio over $50 million during her 18-year contract with them. Lana is often cited as an icon of Hollywood glamour in popular culture. The daughter of working-class parents in northern Idaho, Turner spent her early life there before her family moved to San Francisco. Julia was 15 years old when she was discovered while buying a soft drink at the Top Hat Malt Shop in Hollywood. At the age of 16, she was signed to a personal contract by Warner Bros. director Mervyn LeRoy, who took her with him when he moved to MGM in 1938. Turner attracted attention when playing the role of a murder victim in her first film, LeRoy's They Won't Forget (1937), later being cast in featured roles, often appearing as an ingénue. Lana established herself as a leading actress and one of MGM's top performers during the early '40s, appearing in pictures including the film noir Johnny Eager (1941); the musical Ziegfeld Girl (1941); the horror movie Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941) then the romantic war drama Somewhere I'll Find You (1942), one of several pictures in which she starred opposite Clark Gable. Turner's reputation as a glamorous femme fatale was enhanced by her critically praised performance in the film noir The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946), which established her as a serious dramatic actress. Her popularity was maintained in the '50s in dramas including The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) and Peyton Place (1957), Lana being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for the latter. Media controversy surrounded Turner during 1958, when her 14-year-old daughter Cheryl Crane stabbed Lana's lover Johnny Stompanato to death in their home during a domestic struggle. Turner's next movie, Imitation of Life (1959), was one of the biggest box office hits of her career, with her final starring role in Madame X (1966) leading to her receiving a David di Donatello Award for Best Foreign Actress.
