Book The Filmmaker Says

Download or read book The Filmmaker Says written by and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Compelling and sometimes controversial words from the visionaries behind the camera . . . from Charlie Chaplin to Kathryn Bigelow to Akira Kurosawa.” —Cool Hunting No saint, no pope, no general, no sultan, has ever had the power that a filmmaker has; the power to talk to hundreds of millions of people for two hours in the dark. —Frank Capra Inspiring everything from pop culture earthquakes to popular revolutions, filmmakers have demonstrated an uncanny ability to move the masses. But the drama they project on screen is only half the picture. Stretching from its earliest days of two-reel silent films to the latest 3D digital blockbusters, film history provides a cast of characters ready to spill witty bon mots, outrageous pronouncements, and heartfelt reflections. The Filmmaker Says is a colorful compendium of quotations from more than one hundred of history’s most influential and opinionated creators of filmed entertainment. Paired like guests at the ultimate film geek dinner party, a celebrated filmmaker of today might sit next to a silent-era giant as this raucous crew argues, compliments, and disagrees with each other about every step of the moviemaking process.

Book Make Your Own Damn Movie

Download or read book Make Your Own Damn Movie written by Lloyd Kaufman and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lloyd Kaufman, the writer/producer/director of such cult-classic films as The Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke 'Em High, and Tromeo and Juliet, offers a guide to movie-making unlike any other available anywhere. In 25 years, Kaufman, along with partner Michael Herz, has built Troma Studios up from a company struggling to find its voice in a field crowded with competitors to its current--and legendary--status as a lone survivor, a bastion of true cinematic independence, and the world's greatest collection of camp on film. As entertaining and funny as it is informative and insightful, Make Your Own Damn Movie! places Kaufman's radically low-budget, independent-studio style of filmaking directly in the reader's hands. Thus we learn how to: develop and write a knock-out screenplay; raise funding; find locations and cast actors; hire a crew; obtain equipment, permits, and music rights (all for little or no money); make incredible special effects for $0.79 each; charm, schmooze, and network while on the film-festival circuit; and, finally, make a bad actor act so bad it's actually good. From scriptwriting and directing to financing and marketing, this book is brimming with utterly off-the-wall, decidedly maverick, yet consistently proven advice on how to fully develop one's idea for an independent film.

A rare, revelatory portrait, "as close as you're ever going to get to the Escher drawing that is Christopher Nolan's remarkable brain" (Sam Mendes). In chapters structured by themes and motifs ("Time"; "Chaos"; "Dreams"), Shone offers an unprecedented intimate view of the director. Book excerpt: Compelling quotations from 150 chefs—including James Beard, Julia Child, Gordon Ramsay, April Bloomfield—to inspire and delight professional chefs, foodies, and anyone who's ever resolved a crisis by adding more butter. "Clean plates don't lie." —Dan Barber Great chefs are not self-effacing or meek—there's no room for indecision in the professional kitchen, where the slightest stumble can send an entire restaurant into the weeds. These unruly culinarians compliment, compete, and disagree with one another as they discuss childhood and training, taste preferences and trends, the quest for perfection, and the grueling but exhilarating business of opening a restaurant. The Chef Says will captivate anyone who has ever worked in a kitchen, been inspired by a flawlessly ripe tomato, or resolved a crisis by adding more butter. . The first compendium to focus on quotations from chefs themselves, it is the perfect gift for professionals, foodies, home cooks, and anyone interested in culinary culture . Features 150 quotes from an international roster of chefs, including Ferran Adrià, Lidia Bastianich, Mario Batali, James Beard, Daniel Boulud, Anthony Bourdain, David Chang, Julia Child, Tom Colicchio, Elizabeth David, Wylie Dufresne, Gabrielle Hamilton, Thomas Keller, Jim Lahey, Sarabeth Levine, Edna Lewis, Anita Lo, Gordon Ramsay, Marcus Samuelsson, Andre Soltner, Charlie Trotter, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Alice Waters, and many others . Book Bresson on Bresson Interviews 1943 1983

Download or read book Bresson on Bresson Interviews 1943 1983 written by Robert Bresson and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, a collection of interviews with a French cinematic titan—covering subjects such as adaptation, the effects of capitalism on art, and the importance of intuition—selected from a period of four decades. Robert Bresson, the director of such cinematic masterpieces as Pickpocket, A Man Escaped, Mouchette, and L’Argent, was one of the most influential directors in the history of French film, as well as one of the most stubbornly individual: He insisted on the use of nonprofessional actors; he shunned the “advances” of Cinerama and CinemaScope (and the work of most of his predecessors and peers); and he minced no words about the damaging influence of capitalism and the studio system on the still-developing—in his view—art of film. Bresson on Bresson collects the most significant interviews that Bresson gave (carefully editing them before they were released) over the course of his forty-year career to reveal both the internal consistency and the consistently exploratory character of his body of work. Successive chapters are dedicated to each of his fourteen films, as well as to the question of literary adaptation, the nature of the soundtrack, and to Bresson’s one book, the great aphoristic treatise Notes on the Cinematograph. Throughout, his close and careful consideration of his own films and of the art of film is punctuated by such telling mantras as “Sound...invented silence in cinema,” “It’s the film that...gives life to the characters—not the characters that give life to the film,” and (echoing the Bible) “Every idle word shall be counted.” Bresson’s integrity and originality earned him the admiration of younger directors from Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Rivette to Olivier Assayas. And though Bresson’s movies are marked everywhere by an air of intense deliberation, these interviews show that they were no less inspired by a near-religious belief in the value of intuition, not only that of the creator but that of the audience, which he claims to deeply respect: “It’s always ready to feel before it understands. And that’s how it should be.”
