'The Filigree Ball' is one of Green's novels of crime and mystery. Anna Katharine Green was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA in 1846. She aspired to be a writer from a young age, and corresponded with Ralph Waldo Emerson during her late teens. When her poetry failed to gain recognition, Green produced her first and best-known novel, The Leavenworth Case (1878). Praised by Wilkie Collins, the novel was year's bestseller, establishing Green's reputation. Green wrote at a time when fiction, and especially crime fiction, was dominated by men. However, she is now credited with shaping detective fiction into its classic form, and developing the trope of the recurring detective.

For originality of detail and cleverness of development this book is really unusual. This is something more than a mere detective story; it is a thrilling romance--a romance of mystery and crime where a shrewd detective helps to solve the mystery.

Book excerpt: For a detective whose talents, had not been recognized at headquarters, I possessed an ambition which, fortunately for my standing with the lieutenant of the precinct, had not yet been expressed in words. Though I had small reason for expecting great things of myself, I had always cherished the hope that if a big case came my way I should be found able to do something with it something more, that is, than I had seen accomplished by the police of the District of Columbia since I had had the honor of being one of their number. Therefore, when I found myself plunged, almost without my own volition, into the Jeffrey Moore affair, I believed that the opportunity had come whereby I might distinguish myself. It had complications, this Jeffrey-Moore affair; greater ones than the public ever knew, keen as the interest in it ran both in and out of Washington. This is why I propose to tell the story of this great tragedy from my own standpoint, even if in so doing I risk the charge of attempting to exploit my own connection with this celebrated case. In its course I encountered as many disappointments as triumphs, and brought out of the affair a heart as sore as it was satisfied; for I am a lover of women and— But I am keeping you from the story itself.

Book excerpt: "This inaugural volume in the Library of Congress Crime Classics series, featuring the first woman sleuth in a series, is a must for genre buffs."—Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) From the "mother of detective novel" and the first book unearthed in exclusive partnership with the Library of Congress, That Affair Next Door follows Miss Amelia Butterworth, an inquisitive single woman in the Victorian Era who becomes involved in a murder investigation after the woman next door turns up dead. Heralded as a perfect vintage murder mystery, That Affair Next Door is: For fans of historical crime mysteries and crime classics For readers of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple series For fans of trailblazing women on and off the page Miss Amelia Butterworth prides herself on being an observer of human nature, especially of the people she sees every day from her usual spot at her front window—that is, until she witnesses the prelude to a ghastly murder. Late at night, two people enter her neighbor's home, but only one leaves. The next morning a young woman is found dead, crushed beyond recognition beneath a cabinet. But her death was no accident—it soon comes to light that she was stabbed by a seemingly innocuous item: a hat pin. Rife with social tension and mistaken identity, the messy case is assigned to veteran Detective Ebenezer Gryce. He expects Miss Butterworth to demurely return home, but she was there at the beginning of this case and she intends to see it through to the end. Miss Butterworth is determined to solve the mystery before the detective, but what begins as a battle of the sexes soon turns into a fight for the ever-elusive truth. Anna Katharine Green is credited as the "mother of the detective novel," and the classic That Affair Next Door proves that the intrigue of a well-crafted mystery is timeless.

Book The Washington D C of Fiction

Download or read book The Washington D C of Fiction written by James A. Kaser and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In The Washington, D.C. of Fiction: A Research Guide, James A. Kaser provides detailed synopses for nearly four hundred works published between 1822 and 1976 and bibliographic information for hundreds more published since. Plot summaries, names of major characters, and location lists are also presented. Although this book was written to assist researchers in locating works of fiction for analysis, the plot summaries have enough detail for general readers so they can develop an understanding of the way attitudes toward Washington, and what the city symbolizes, have changed over the years. Similarly, the biographical section demonstrates the wide range of journalists, politicians, society women, and freelance writers who were motivated to write about the city."--BOOK JACKET.
