Book excerpt: Excerpt from True and Firm: Biography of Ezra Cornell, Founder of the Cornell University; A Filial Tribute For several years it has been the author's de sire that a suitable biography of the founder OF the cornell university should be prepared by another, whose cultured pen would invest the work with that degree of interest to which the subject is so worthily entitled. Exacting duties have, however, delayed such an undertaking, and still prevent any reasonable promise Of its early consummation. Mainly for the purpose Of placing the material in form for safe preservation for future use, this simple record of the leading incidents of his earnest life and untiring labors has been pre pared, which, it is hoped, may hereafter serve as a text-book Of facts requisite for the more inter esting treatment of the subject by other and abler hands. Prepared originally for private use, it is realized that the work is deficient of any literary merit which would justify its publication, and thatcourse has finally been taken only at the urgent solicitation Of interested friends. Book Xuanhe Catalogue of Paintings

Download or read book Xuanhe Catalogue of Paintings written by and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Xuanhe Catalogue of Paintings is the first complete translation of the well-known document produced at the court of Emperor Huizong (r. 1100–1125). Dated to 1120, the Catalogue is divided into ten categories of subject matter. Under Daoist and Buddhist Subjects, Figural Subjects, Architecture, Barbarian Tribes, Dragons and Fish, Landscape, Domestic and Wild Animals, Flowers and Birds, Ink Bamboo, and Vegetables and Fruit are biographies of 231 painters, ranging from famous early masters, such as Wu Daozi (ca. 685-758) and Li Cheng (919-967), to otherwise unknown artists of the Song-dynasty court, including fourteen eunuch officials and sixteen male and female members of the royal family. Titles of their pictures held in the palace collection are listed for each artist. These 6,396 paintings testify to the visual culture experienced by viewers of the twelfth century. The author's Introduction analyzes the Catalogue as a source of evidence about the formation of the Song-dynasty palace collection and argues that the majority of its pictures were already in the collection before Huizong's reign, as a result of conquest, confiscation, tribute, gift culture, collecting by earlier emperors, and the production of academy artists and regular officials at the Song court. Under Huizong's reign, around a thousand other pictures were added to the Catalogue through acquisition and reattribution. Open access edition funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women Must Weep: A Novel Eunice came over to Dora, now, shaking her head in great rebuke, and yet laughing with soft, irrepressible laughter. She circled each of her sis ters' backs with an arm, and for a moment, inter twined thus, the trio made a picture of exquisite, unconscious charm. They all three laughed to gether. Was not Dora the wit of the family, and would not poor, dear pa himself have laughed if he had been there? But it was mirth with no hint in it of anything but a sort of gentle reactionary hys teria, and it even bore its tribute of filial devotion as well. And yet the girls looked suddenly at one another with shocked faces, and Eunice almost haughtily withdrew herself, saying. Book In Memoriam Rev Cyrus Hamlin D D L L D Classic Reprint

Download or read book In Memoriam Rev Cyrus Hamlin D D L L D Classic Reprint written by Alfred Dwight Foster Hamlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Memoriam, Rev. Cyrus Hamlin, D.D., L. L. D The preparation of this little book has been undertaken as a tribute of filial love to a dear parent, and as an expression of the grateful regard in which Dr. Hamlin's family hold the devoted friendship of the hundreds of friends who contributed so greatly to the happiness of Dr. Hamlin's life and to the sweetening of his hours of trial and sorrow. No man ever tasted the joys of friendship more abundantly and fully than he, and next to his sublime Christian faith there was in his life no deeper source of felicity than the affection of his family and of his wide and yet choice' circle of friends. To all of these - to all who loved him in life, and who, now that he has departed from us for a season, cherish his memory as a blessed inspiration, this little record of his life and death and of the words spoken by his friends, is grate fully dedicated. The compiler of this brief record, through a son, has preferred to write in an impersonal style, as a chronicler from the outside, rather than to obtrude his own personality, feeling and emotions upon the reader's attention. At the same time, writing for friends only and not for the general public, he has included some details and extracts from letters which would perhaps have been omitted from a biography intended for the public. He begs to express his grateful obligations to those friends whose liberal subscriptions made possible the publication of this memorial. Book The Life and Letters of Sir John Henniker Heaton Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life and Letters of Sir John Henniker Heaton Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Adrian Porter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Sir John Henniker Heaton Spirit and his unfailing geniality. Loving hands have written his life. As one of the inner circle of his friends, I can add a hearty endorsement of the filial tribute to his memory. I came to know him many years ago. Mr Samuel Bennett brought us together in Sydney. Mr Bennett was one of the best Englishmen I knew in Australia. By sheer force of character, backed up by a robust intellect, with little capital and no patronage, he established the fortune of two most successful news papers in Sydney, one a daily and the other a weekly. What is more, Samuel Bennett was in the forefront of those public benefactors whose success, great as it was, was not greater than the fine impression it enabled him to make upon public Opinion and Australian journalism. The fact that such a man took to the subject of this biography and gave him his important start in life, as well as his only daughter, who was the crowning happiness of Sir John Henniker Heaton's life, in itself speaks volumes in favour of the man who afterwards became the Member for Australia.
