Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Book 40 Questions About Typology and Allegory

Download or read book 40 Questions About Typology and Allegory written by Mitchell L. Chase and published by Kregel Publications. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of two literary devices that are indispensable for understanding salvation history A biblical type is a person, place, or thing in salvation history that corresponds to a later person, place, or thing in the scriptural text. An allegory is a passage that says one thing in order to say something else. Both are common literary devices in the Bible that are vital for understanding truths about Jesus Christ found nowhere else. In 40 Questions About Typology and Allegory, Mitchell Chase provides a thorough introduction to both devices, showing where they appear throughout Scripture and the historical roles they have played in biblical interpretation. In a convenient question-and-answer format, Chase answers key questions such as: • Why should interpreters care about typology and allegory? • How do we identify types? • What are the theological assumptions of typology? • Do all types lead to Christ? • What is allegorical interpretation? • How was allegory practiced in the early church? • How should we practice allegorical interpretation? Situating typology and allegory within salvation history, Chase shows how these devices reveal the interconnectedness of Scripture and commonly overlooked aspects of Christ's person and work. Scholars, Bible teachers, and preachers will find this an essential resource for interpreting Scripture more comprehensively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his 1955 examination of Jonathan Edwards' formative years, Morris undertook a corrective of the prevailing view of Edwards' relation to John Locke. The result is an analysis of the intellectual milieu inhabited by Edwards during the years in which his philosophical vocabulary and his seminal theological concepts evolved. Long an unpublished dissertation, this massive work reflects that most unusual combination of being a pioneering exploration and, most likely, a definitive evaluation. Dr. Kenneth Minkema, Executive Director of the Jonathan Edwards Center, Yale University Other scholars have filled in our picture of Jonathan Edwards' mental world, adding new shades, hues and detail to our view of the young theologian. But no one matches William Morris's Young Jonathan Edwards for comprehension and virtuosity. His study is as rewarding as it is challenging. The Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale University deserves our thanks for bringing this masterpiece back to us. Douglas A. Sweeney, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School Written at the onset of the academic recovery of Jonathan Edwards, William Morris's Chicago dissertation remains the best record of the young Edwards from his years at home and at Yale to his months at the Scots Presbyterian Church in New York, altogether an extensive reconstruction of how he came to think the way he did. That it will be widely available now is a welcome recovery in itself. - M.X. Lesser, Emeritus, Northeastern University William Sparkes Morris wrote The Young Jonathan Edwards as a dissertation at the University of Chicago and completed it in 1955. His dissertation was originally published in 1991 as part of the Chicago Studies in the History of American Religion, edited by Martin Mary and Jerald C. Brauer. Morris died in 1983 at the age of 67.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In short, the central argument of this study posits that Goodwin's Christology is grounded in, and flows out of, the eternal covenant of redemption, also known as the pactum salutis or »counsel of peace«. That is to say, his Christology does not begin in the temporal realm at the incarnation, but stretches back into eternity when the persons of the Trinity covenanted to bring about the salvation of fallen mankind. Goodwin's Christology moves from the pretemporal realm to the temporal realm with a decidedly eschatological thrust, that is, with a view to the glory of the God-man, Jesus Christ. What this work does is connect two vital aspects of Reformed theology, namely, the doctrine of Christ and the concept of the covenant. The findings of this study show that, for Goodwin, Christ is the Christ of the covenant.
